Course Description

Status Reports That Work

You spend hours every week writing status reports. Finding last week's update. Copying and pasting. Reformatting in Word. Chasing down information. And for what? A report that gets skimmed in 30 seconds... if it gets read at all.

Here's the truth: your status report is your reputation on a page. It's how leadership sees you, judges your project, and decides whether to trust you with the next big thing. A great project with a bad report looks like a bad project. And a well-managed project with a great report? That PM looks like a star.

In this course, you'll learn exactly what executives want from a status report — and how to deliver it in a fraction of the time.

What you'll learn:

  • Why most status reports fail and what executives actually want to see

  • The 30-second rule: How to structure reports that get read

  • The essential sections every status report needs

  • How to write accomplishments, blockers, and risks that drive action

  • How to tailor your reports for different audiences

  • The math: how status reporting eats 250+ hours of your year

  • How to build a professional report in under 5 minutes

This course is for you if:

  • You write status reports as part of your job

  • You're tired of spending hours on updates nobody reads

  • You want leadership to see you as a clear, trusted communicator

  • You're preparing for PMP and want real-world stakeholder communication skills

By the end of this course, you'll have a repeatable system for writing status reports that get read, build trust, and take minutes, not hours.

One hour. One PMI Professional Development Unit (PDU). A skill you'll use every week for the rest of your career.

Excelente explicación y me hizo comprender la importancia del respeto de mi tiempo y el tiempo de los demás. Aprovechar todos los recursos para elaborar reportes eficientes y eficaces.

The course could have been shorter, even with the demo of the reporting tool at the end, as some of the modules were repetitive IMO. I hate reading long reports and preparing reports, so I have always tried to keep reports I prepare brief with bullet points, clear headings etc. This course did confirm some of what I have been doing as good practice, as well as introduced me to new ideas and techniques I will use going forward. As other reviews pointed out, the ads were a menace and so much louder than the course audio. Guess the ads are there because it is a free course and something has to pay the bills.

The progress reporting of a project is extremely important, but in Japan, people generally tend to prepare very detailed materials for such reports—especially in government-related projects. On the other hand, I now fully understand the importance of creating reports that allow stakeholders to grasp the situation at a glance, such as “So what’s the status?” and “Are there any issues?” I also realized that this kind of concise reporting directly affects how a project manager is evaluated. Since executives have very limited time, I want to keep in mind going forward that reports must be understandable within 30 seconds. Although the content of the lecture may sound obvious, actually putting it into practice in the real workplace varies depending on the organizational environment and culture. That said, as project managers, we must always keep these principles in mind as we carry out our work.

Good basic coverage of project status reporting. Although the video states 1.0 PDU for ways of working, PMI only grants 0.5 PDU. Final section is a product demo. Of a webapp called ProjectStatusReport.com

This course contains excellent information that - as a beginner in project management and student working on obtaining my CAPM - I felt was very valuable. I plan on implementing much of what I learned. A couple minor things that bothered me is the ad in every segment was quite distracting, and most of the videos cut off 1-3 seconds early, cutting off the instructor's last word or two. Other than that, I really enjoyed this course. Thank you!

This course is straightforward and provides what is required by most project managers

Excellent course by Joseph Phillips. The explanations are clear and practical, with strong real-world examples. I really liked the focus on charts and key statistics instead of long text, and how project challenges and delays are communicated effectively. Very useful for improving professional status reporting.

Very nice and useful course with clear, direct instructions on how to create a status report.

By Rachel Lambert Miller on 2/4/2026

Great course! It's only an hour long, you get a PDU for PMI, and a link to an awesome Project Status Report generator. Inside the 1-hour course, you get a solid overview (or reminder) of what should go into a status report, what shouldn't, and (the best part) how to actually get your stakeholders to read them! Did I sign up for the free 2-week trial to use the report generator? Yes, I did. Will I be paying for the product after the trial period is over? Yes, I will. I know there are all types of PM software out there, but most of them are bloated with way more than I use, so this report generator is just what I need. Plus, it's super straightforward and slick to use. Two thumbs up #KMF
