Course Description

Are you one of the people that would like to start a data science career or are you just fond of using data for data analysis in your spare time or for your job?  Do you use spreadsheets for data cleaning, wrangling, visualization, and data analysis? I think it is time to enhance your hobby or your career path with learning adequate skills such as R.

R is s a programming language that enables all essential steps when you are dealing with data like:

  • importing,

  • exporting,

  • cleaning,

  • merging,

  • transforming,

  • analyzing,

  • visualizing,

  • and extracting insights from the data.

Originally R began as a free software environment for statistical computing with graphics supported. Over the years with the rapid development of computing power and the need for tools used for mining and analyzing tons of data that are being generated on every step of our lives, R has emerged into something much greater than its original laid path. Nowadays the R community is vast, every day thousands of people start learning R, and every day new R's libraries are being made and released to the world. These libraries solve different users' needs because they provide different functions for dealing with all kinds of data.

If you are still not convinced to join me on a journey where foundations for your R skills will be laid, please bear with me a bit more. In this R for Beginners course, you will dive into essential aspects of the language that will help you escalate your learning curve. Course first gently touches the basics like:

  • how to install R and how to install R's Integrated Development Environment (IDE) RStudio,

  • then you will learn how to create your first R script and R project folder,

  • R project folder will be your baseline folder where all your scripts and assignments will be saved,

  • you will learn how to install different R packages and how to use functions provided with each package.

After these first steps, you will dive into sections where all major R data structures are presented. You will be able to:

  • differentiate among each data structure,

  • use built-in functions to manipulate data structures,

  • reshape, access elements, and convert R objects,

  • import data from many different sources into R's workspace and

  • export R objects to different data sources.

When you will have a grasp of what R is capable of, a section devoted to programming elements will guide you through essential steps for writing a programming code that can execute repetitive tasks. Here you will master:

  • your first loops,

  • conditional statements,

  • your custom made functions,

  • and you will be able to optimize your code using vectorization.

It is said that a picture can tell an observer a powerful story and holds a stronger message than a thousand words combined. In the final section of this course, the greatest R's power is revealed, the power to tell the story by using data visualization. Here you will master how to build:

  • scatterplots,

  • line charts,

  • histograms,

  • box plots,

  • bar charts,

  • mosaic plots,

  • how to alter R's default graphical parameters to make beautiful figures,

  • and how to export a figure from R to a proper format for further sharing with your colleagues.

If you are still not convinced to start learning R, I will share with you how the course is structured:

  • Each section holds separate exercises covering learning material that is related to the section's topic.

  • Normally each exercise begins with a short intro that provides a basic understanding of the topic, then a coding exercise is presented.

  • During coding exercise, you will write the R code for executing given tasks.

  • At the end of each section, an assignment is presented.

  • Each assignment tests the skills you have learned during a given section.

  • In the last two assignments, you will write a code to build a simulation environment where you will execute the simulation and present the results with proper visualization techniques.

Do not lose more time and please enroll in the course today. I guarantee you will learn a lot and you will enjoy the learning process.

Marko Intihar, PhD

Hi, I am Marko Intihar. I hold a Ph.D. in Logistics from the University of Maribor, where I began my professional journey as a researcher and teaching assistant, focusing on statistics, data analysis, and operations research. During my academic years, I also published several scientific papers in the area of time series modeling.

Curious to see theory in action, I transitioned into the industry, first in the retail sector, where I worked as a data scientist for a major retail company. This experience allowed me to apply machine learning and data mining techniques to real-world, large-scale datasets.

For over six years, I have worked as a data scientist in the banking industry, spanning two major banks. Financial data presents its unique challenges and opportunities, and this environment has deepened my skills in areas such as predictive modeling, advanced data analysis, and business intelligence.

What ties everything together is my passion for teaching. I create courses that help learners master the tools, techniques, and concepts of modern data science. Whether you are learning statistics, exploring machine learning, or diving into data analysis with tools like R or Python, my goal is to make complex topics accessible and practical.

If you are eager to build a strong foundation in data science and apply it to real-world problems, you are in the right place.

I've found this course to be more thorough than many other R resources I've used. The pacing is steady and very easy to track. The occasional small error doesn't detract from the teaching at all; the quality is still excellent. I intend to enroll in the rest of your R courses. Thanks for a high-quality learning experience.

Great course ... there are no "colorful bells and whistles" in this course, just the instructor walking you thru code with RStudio showing. I have had a lot of R courses and this is the best one I know about. English is not the instructor's native language (I don't think) but he is quite understandable and easy to listen to. I give him 5 stars for sure, more if I could.

The creator of the content is too quick. He assumes that people have already basics of programming and so on. Also, sometimes at the assignments he is touching and showing the things that have not been shown before (absolutely new concept and way solving the problem, which creates more questions than clears them). Overall, I will not go further for the next course with him. Comparing to 100 Days with Python, this course is like a uncooked rice with raw meat on top of it. I finished the first three big Data structures and did not even reach the programming part but something tells me that it is going to be only worse.

Marco the instructor explained things very well, in step by step approach, about R and went into good detail with many examples. He also provided good practical exercises where you could practice what you learned and then provided walk-through solutions to the exercises which were very useful in showing you how to get to the right answer. The only issue I had was that an awful lot was covered in each section of the course between assignments and it might be better to provide shorter exercises but more frequently through the course testing you smaller amounts of knowledge. But apart from that I thought the course really good and would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn R frequently be

Thank you so much for making this course, Marko! I had a great time taking it, and I really learned a lot from you. I have taken computer science classes in Java, but I had never used R before, and thought this was a great introduction to the language! Thank you again!

By Petros Stathopoulos on 4/11/2022

Thank you Marco the courses are amazing, the only point that I have so far, as this is a beginners course , I would like just a quick definition of the terms we have used so far, eg. a variable is like a container that stores single values that can change, some variables are strings like "letters" others are whole numbers like "integers" others are logical results "true or false" etc. Thank you Marco cheers!

The content is good, but because the captions and transcript are auto-generated it is very hard for me to follow along with what the instructor is saying. I require transcripts and captioning for accessibility and I am disappointed that a course I paid for does not provide these things when I am providing accurate human-created captions for all the content I create and mine is available for free. I expect more from a paid course.

By Filip Arsenovski on 1/31/2022

As someone that is more familiar with Python programming and it's just beginning to learn R, this course exceeded my expectations, and helped me a lot in understanding the basic principles of R. I think that the whole course is really comprehensive and everything that a beginner data scientist should know is explained. As a result, I bought the other two R courses from Marko, and can't wait to continue improving my R skills.

By Mo S on 10/20/2021

I started from 'zero knowledge' and was quite intimidated about the prospect of having to learn R, but Marko's course is fantastic and has really demystified R for me. To anyone thinking "Where do I even start with R??", I would highly recommend Marko's course.
