Secret Sauce of Great Writing (Udemy.com)

Learn the Timeless Craft of Writing to Improve Your Book, Blog and Business Writing

Created by: Shani Raja

Last updated June 2026

Our take

Based on the ratings of 19,864 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

A free 48-minute primer on the four qualities Shani Raja says separate good prose from flat prose: simplicity, clarity, elegance and evocativeness. He is a former Wall Street Journal editor, and the course has been on Udemy since 2014, picking up about 269,000 students and nearly 20,000 reviews on the way. It was refreshed in June 2026. The syllabus shows 19 short lectures across two sections, and the second section, at 11 minutes, is mostly about where to go next. It is aimed at working professionals, bloggers and marketers who write every day but have never been taught how to edit themselves.

Reviewers praise how quickly it pays off. One says the first sentence of the course alone made her spot habits she didn't know she had, and another mentions the editing workbook that goes with the lectures. Students describe him as clear, straightforward and easy to follow. The complaints are consistent, though. The one and two star reviews call the tips basic and say the course only scratches the surface, which is fair for 48 minutes. One reviewer complains of slow video and too many commercials, and another objects to the course endorsing AI writing tools. One or two reviewers say they struggle to follow his speech.

At a 4.1 rating with about half the reviews at five stars, this is a solid free taster rather than a full writing course. It costs nothing and asks for under an hour, so the risk is low. Next to the other personal development picks here, it is among the quickest to finish. Take it if you want a vocabulary for what is wrong with a sentence. If you want drills, feedback or a deep treatment, expect to move on to Writing With Flair or something similar afterwards.

Best forProfessionals, bloggers and marketers who write every day and want a quick framework for cutting flab from their sentences.
Skip it ifYou want exercises, feedback or depth; low-star reviewers call it an appetizer that barely scratches the surface.

Pros

  • Under an hour and free, and reviewers say the opening lecture already exposes bad habits.
  • The four-ingredient framework (simplicity, clarity, elegance, evocativeness) is easy to remember and apply.
  • Taught by a former Wall Street Journal editor whom students call clear and straightforward.
  • Refreshed in June 2026, with an editing workbook to work through alongside the lectures.

Cons

  • Low-star reviews call the tips basic and say the course only scratches the surface.
  • One reviewer objects to the course endorsing AI writing tools, and another complains of too many commercials.
  • One or two reviewers say they cannot follow his speech, and there is no certificate.
The instructor simplified complex topics and explained them concisely. I found the class gave me a lot of insight, especially in seeing the strengths and challenges in my writing.

Genuinely beginner. If you have already read a style guide or taken a writing class, most of this will be familiar.

Do you wish you were able to write business reports, sales emails, website copy, cover letters or college essays with supreme confidence?

Imagine, then, what it would be like if you could write with the style and flair of journalists on top newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal and The Economist.

Welcome to the  new second edition of Secret Sauce Of Great Writing, a program that will show you how it's possible to upgrade your business writing, blog writing and copywriting skills to that level extremely fast.

The course is taught by Shani Raja, author of the bestselling Udemy course Writing With Flair: How To Become An Exceptional Writer and a former Wall Street Journal senior editor and writing coach, as well as an ex-contributor to The Economist, the FT, Dow Jones and Bloomberg News.

In this course, Shani will introduce you to the fundamental four ingredients of exceptional writing:

  1. Simplicity

  2. Clarity

  3. Elegance

  4. Evocativeness

In as little as an hour, you'll know exactly how to apply this "secret sauce" to your own writing—putting you way ahead of other writers in your profession or industry, and miles ahead of most people currently using AI to write with.

"Outstanding course from the get go..." — Rudyard von, Udemy student

"A genuine recipe to produce attention-grabbing writing..." — Hassan Masood, Udemy student

"Revolutionary..." — Marie-Rose Davis, Udemy student

"Impressive..." — Cornelia M. Lorenzo, Udemy student

"Priceless..."  — Alimaa Batchuluun, Udemy student

The secret sauce

The first three ingredients in the secret sauce—simplicity, clarity and elegance—respectively make your writing punchy, crisp and graceful.

Evocativeness is the fourth quality that makes your prose stimulating.

When you put those four ingredients together in a piece of writing, it becomes truly outstanding.

That's the exact formula Shani has used for many years to edit articles devoured regularly by millions of people worldwide.

(If you want to know how these same principles can be applied when working with ChatGPT and similar tools, AI Writing Mastery will show you how.)

Perhaps you've always felt your writing was too weak to get noticed or make an impact. Maybe you've struggled to figure out how to improve it, or even to know where to begin.

Don't worry.

This course will reveal the writing tactics of world-class editors in a well-structured and easy-to-follow format.

You'll find that as soon as you incorporate those four ingredients (simplicity, clarity, elegance and evocativeness) into your writing, you'll see a seismic shift in the impact of your words and sentences.

"Goes beyond the bland lessons of early education by adding flavor and life to your prose..." — Billy Williams, Udemy student

"Excellent advice and interaction kept me glued to this course..." — John Faherty, Udemy student

"Really gives you the ability to see how your writing could improve..." — Cameron M. Kreider, Udemy student

"Shattered my opinion about good writing..." — Bilal Ahmad,  Udemy student

"Thank you for enlightening us..." — Tanpreet Kaur Narula, Udemy student

"Makes you feel comfortable and excited about writing..." — Travis Fry, Udemy student

"Helped me to see exactly what I needed..." — Shalecia Tatiana Wallace, Udemy student

How many job interviews might you have lost because your cover letters and resume didn't hit home?

How many customers might you have turned off because the words on your website were too dull and uninspiring to read?

How many books or blog posts have you quit writing, or put off, because you couldn't figure out why your sentences and words lacked the power to captivate a reader?

You'll find the answers to such questions in this course, your first glimpse into the wondrous world of elite writing.

Not tips, but a writing system

This entry-level writing course doesn't focus on the technical aspects of writing, such as grammar rules.

Rather, it reveals the powerful key principles that will enable you quickly to design more stylish prose.

I love the details and editing workbook that's provided to use as the lectures are given. Thank you for making this course interactive! Learning to cut out the fluff and excessive weight in sentences has been very helpful.

By Danielle M Roy on 8/7/2026

He is very engaging and quite open and straightforward. Hahahahah let me put it this way ... Just reread the first sentence, just shook my head and laughed. I immediately recognized what I DIDN'T do. Great so far, really glad I chose to look into it.

By Amoo Isaac on 5/26/2026

I haven't really advanced into the course but so far I know that the tutor has an in-depth knowledge in the course he is taking.

By Rifah binte Faruk on 4/28/2026

I can't really understand anything... I mean he is saying stuff that kinda makes sense bt then again how am I supposed to it ? the course is supposed to show me that no?

By Jennifer Keren on 4/16/2026

The instructor simplified complex topics and explained them concisely. I found the class gave me a lot of insight, especially in seeing the strengths and challenges in my writing.

this course is exactly what you are looking for if you are beginner writer looking forward sharpening your teeth for every pessimistic personas that once held you from reaching out what you seek for

By Markeba Price on 1/11/2026

It was a good course. I have to take time to read over the material you have given. Maybe a few more examples on how to begin. I've had graduate homework assignments, and they merely tore my work apart. My sentences stated the same as whatever corrections they wanted and I just could not handle it! I ended up not passing the class, refusing to retake the class, and just dropped out. Now, these colleges state that we have to follow the APA writing standards or use Grammerly! This is why I don't care what Society says about anything anymore!

By Kelvin Soman on 12/19/2025

This course nails the details on good writing and bad writing. Putting the fun in fundamentals when it comes to writing and editing.

By Cynthia Soita on 11/25/2025

Just as he is teaching, he has indeed simplified his teaching which makes it more understandable.

By Lindsey Makena on 11/15/2025

Yes it was a great match I have learnt alot and some things that I have never heard from anywhere else. Like simplicity in writing I normally didn't know that simplicity is the right way to write.
