Ninja Writing: The Four Levels Of Writing Mastery (Udemy.com)

A four-hour writing course from Shani Raja, a former Wall Street Journal editor, built around one idea: good prose works at four levels, the narrative, the paragraph, the sentence and the word. Each gets its own section, and the narrative and sentence sections take the most time. It's pitched at business writers, bloggers, students and anyone who writes for work, and a reviewer who came from his Writing with Flair course says it follows on naturally. It isn't aimed at fiction, though one aspiring romance writer says the lessons still apply. About 125,000 students have enrolled and the rating sits at 4.8 across roughly 21,000 reviews.

Students praise the structure most. The 50 lectures are short, and one reviewer says that makes it easy to learn in short bursts; two others say they plan to come back and watch again. Raja's teaching gets consistent marks for being clear and engaging, and one self-described amateur in English says it gave him a clear idea of how to improve. The criticism is mild. One long-time writer found the sentence and paragraph sections basic, though he calls the rest great and a useful refresher. Another says some examples could be sharper. The bigger gap is practice: there are no quizzes, assignments or exercises, so applying the ideas is entirely on you.

The course was refreshed in June 2026, so it isn't showing its age despite first appearing in 2016. It's the odd one out in our Teaching and Academics list beside statistics, nutrition and Spanish courses. The only two-star review in our sample came from someone who meant to buy a different course. If you write for a living and want an editor's eye on your prose without a long time commitment, it's an easy recommendation.
