Course Description

According to a recent study conducted by a major Cyber Security firm, less than half the online population understands the term "Firewalls" - or know if they have one enabled on their PC.

Firewalls are even more important in a corporate or work environment. It not only keeps the corporate network safe - but can also optimize traffic routing and provide a whole range of other benefits.

If you are connected to the Internet, you are a potential target to an array of cyber threats, such as hackers, keyloggers, and Trojans that attack through unpatched security holes. This means that if you, like most people shop and bank online, are vulnerable to identity theft and other malicious attacks.

A firewall works as a barrier, or a shield, between your PC and cyberspace. When you are connected to the Internet, you are continually sending and receiving information in small units called packets. The firewall filters these packets to see if they meet certain criteria set by a series of rules, and after that blocks or allows the data. This way, hackers cannot get inside and steal information such as bank account numbers and passwords from you.

Basic firewalls such as the one included in your operating systems, only monitor incoming traffic by default. This may give you a false sense of security. Keep in mind, outgoing traffic, with your credit card information, bank accounts, and social security number is not protected. A good firewall will monitor traffic in both directions. That is, both your incoming data and your outgoing data, keeping your private information safe. In addition to preventing unauthorized access to your PC, it also makes your PC invisible when you're online, helping prevent attempted intrusions in the first place.

Firewalls are one of the most critical parts of a network. It’s the first line of defense that your system has against attacks or unwanted visitors, and it makes all the difference in ensuring your data is protected. pfSense is a highly versatile, open source routing and firewall software. With thousands of enterprises using pfSense software, it is fast the world's most trusted open source network security solution.

pfSense has all of the features you would find in a commercial firewall solution and more, and it is absolutely free! Better yet, you can customize pfSense based on your organization’s requirements and create a unique solution that is perfect for you.

  • Do you know what it takes to install and configure a sophisticated firewall?
  • How do you scale your firewall from a small home office to a large corporation’s network?
  • How do you implement security features like VPN, remote access and corporate web proxy?

These are some of the fundamental problems IT engineers struggle with on a daily basis.

In this course, you’ll learn about pfSense, all of its key features, how you can install and deploy it, as well as the different tasks you can perform.

  • You’ll learn about pfSense.
  • You will gain an understanding of what pfSense is, its key features and advantages.
  • You will learn how to configure pfSense as a firewall and create and manage firewall rules.
  • pfSense is capable of working with multiple ISP connections and provide you this redundancy. You will learn to configure and test pfSense for failover and load balancing across multiple WAN connections.
  • Besides that, secure remote connectivity is also a critical feature for many businesses and professionals. You will dive into configuring pfSense a free and robust remote connectivity solutions using OpenVPN and IPSec
  • Finally, you’ll learn how to configure and integrate pfSense as a Squid proxy server.

I would recommend this course if you're interested in learning how to set up a VPN, firewall, or other functions that pfsense is capable of. It provides a lot of good information on how to set them up and use them and since pfsense is free it's something that can help those looking to implement firewall or other networking problems quickly and cheaply with very little extra hardware. The only drawback is that it's a bit slow in places with some padding for content with stock footage that could just be done quicker.

This was an excellent course - the presenter was clear, had a good pace, and was very engaging. The material covered was most of what I needed. I do like that every module started with a clear "here is what we are going to cover", then covered the "what" of the topic, then the "how and why" of the topic, and finally, a mini-review of "this is what you should have learned". Well organized, nice job.

The firewall rules require repeating over several times because they are presented at what feels like a rather accelerated pace. Course is excellent but I cannot click as fast as the rules are being presented. The clarity and depth of content for this class is both enjoyable and easy to follow. I learned a great deal with this class.

All course contents are available freely on youtube and other blogs.. faculty is not responsive to the questions... Only basic pfsense functionalities are covered .. nothing in-depth.. again all these are available online.. Following sections are missing ---- high avail sync DMZ Aliases Schedules traffic shapper captive portal PPPoE server nothing about IPv6 in-depth squid Logs how to block applications how to find and take actions on a user with high bandwidth uses how to block torrent .. any many more like this after all, waste of money...

There are some errors, but the worst to me is you say that opening standard ports like HTTP 80 and HTTPS 443 are done in the source port. It should be the destination port that uses those, and the source port is basically randomly selected so we do not predict what that will be.

I actually interested on how the ipsec tunnel is implemented. However there is no working demo that both sites are working together. Instead this one just show us on the interface of pfsense on how to configure. We need something that is working and simulate 2 sites.

Continuez....

As someone who did not have any experience with firewalls, it was pretty good introduction to the topic and covered the main topics of interest. One issue that I had with the presentation of the topics was that the majority of the topics were covered in the Demo section of the course. It would have been nice for the handouts to cover the steps covered in the demos for quick reference in the future without having to go through all the videos again. A screen shot of the demos would have sufficed for this purpose. Overall for the price and the material it was very good. The instructor was also very good and articulate. He covered the major areas very well.

A couple things to consider. When I followed the instructions to create the pfsense appliance and attached it to the LAN Segment it wasn't clear how that was to be done. On another note, I had a PIA client running on my vm in the LAN segment and it took me 2 days to figure out why the firewall was not blocking... might be good to mention that a VPN client bypasses the firewall function and lastly the Squid Proxy server is not working :-( when I followed the instructions. But overall this was a wonderfully to-the-point instructional video. My Netgate SG-1000 will soon show up and I now feel very confident in my ability to set it up!!!
