Course Description

When you wish to learn to program, the first thing most coders think of is to learn Python, C++, WordPress, or WooCommerce. But all of these languages and platforms are already saturated. That's why if you learn them, you'll most likely end up not getting a profit.

So, instead of making WordPress or other stuff, why not start making Shopify apps? Like what Shopify said, "There's never been a better time to build a Shopify app because there are more than 1.8 million merchants across the globe that build, scale, and manage their businesses on Shopify".

If you don't know, Shopify apps play an important role in every Shopify store's success. In fact, it is SO important that every Shopify store uses an average of SIX Shopify apps.

So why not start making Shopify apps?

If you don't know, you can make thousands of dollars with Shopify apps MONTHLY! You heard me right, MONTHLY! and you know what's more amazing? Shopify is no longer getting any shares from your app revenues! What that means is your profit is all yours!

So, are you interested?

In this course, I will be teaching you how to create a Shopify app from scratch using vanilla PHP. That means we are NOT going to rely on libraries or repositories created by other programmers. We ARE going to create everything from scratch.

If you want to learn more about me, I have been developing Shopify apps since 2018 and so all of the things I know, I will be sharing with you so YOU can start your new career and make a profit out of your Shopify apps.

Here is what you are going to learn in this course:

  • Creating API credentials

  • Understanding API and secret keys

  • Creating a local server and tunneling

  • Connecting your Shopify app to the database

  • Creating Shopify OAuth

  • Generating access tokens

  • Creating REST API & GraphQL functions

  • Fixing basic errors

  • Creating and adding ScriptTags

  • Shopify App Bridge

  • JWT / Session Tokens

  • Webhooks

  • and much more!

Bernard Polidario

Hello! I'm Bernard.

I am a Shopify Developer at WeeklyHow with a stack-overflowing passion for teaching and making content online. I started learning how to code when I was 12 years old. The very first programming language that I learned is ActionScript 2, if you know Adobe Flash, that's the first thing I learned. Then, PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, Unity, and the list goes on and on.

I've made so many projects before but most of them were deleted due to me neglecting the web server that I had years ago.

Then, I started making YouTube videos reacting to funny things online, and making songs, and had more than 12,000 subscribers. Unfortunately, I had to move on from that channel because I realized that my true passion is coding and teaching.

Anyway, I decided to start teaching here on Udemy as well and so if you're reading this right now, I hope you'll find your way into one of my courses, and hopefully, you find them helpful.

Me not having a great basic-knowledge on programming, am flabbergasted by the possibilities. I could never have established such results on my own, and probably won't in the near future. But I will always have this course, and hopefully, one day, be able to structure this on my own. For now, I am more than happy to follow this course and reep the results. I have got to say, you, the lecturer, should be proud about the knowledge you have build!

The structure of the course is good and it covers most of the basics required to setup a Shopify App. The only problem is that the code is outdated: - the code for AppBridge is outdated. In the new version, you don't need to create a class to load it - the code to redirect after the installation doesn't work. It should be done using the new AppBridge code with the function "open" - adding a page title should be done using "ui-title-bar" and not the old AppBridge code in this course - most of the authentication can be done in one function using the Shopify PHP SDK

Its April 2023. I've just completed the setup and installation of an app for a store, and I can say that all things here does work. The videos are dated and not based on current documentation and UI for Shopify, BUT, everything he mentions is generally where he says they are, don't be too picky about seeing the exact same UI and doc. There are mistakes here and there, which he catches along the way. If your a novice, you'll find these tutorials hard to follow as you could get frustrated with the errors. Overall, I found it relatively easy to follow compared to the documentation from Shopify. He only uses vanilla PHP, nothing fancy, and just focuses on the things you need to get the installation working. I initially began to look over the documentation relating to PHP and noticed that they have templates, but thought it was stupid that these boilerplate templates also uses a framework (Laravel) as a the base. I'm familiar with Laravel, but what about those people that are not? This tutorial is definitely much easier to understand in my opinion. After knowing the inner workings, I could apply the knowledge towards a framework.

I'll start by saying that there is a ton of good content in this course. However, it is dated and there are parts of code that simply do not work. I would also call this far from a course that you're able to just follow along with. Meaning the course is 12 hours long, I spent more than that on Google trying to get through the course. If I can give any advice on those who watch this in the future, watch the entire lecture before doing any coding and do not rely on Bernard to answer any questions.

Excellent course that explains exactly what it said it would. If you already have general knowledge of PHP and Javascript, AND want to understand how to interact with Shopify , then buy this course. By using "Vanilla" PHP, you understand exactly what is going on behind the scenes. Just ignore the reviews that give 1 or 2 stars, those people did not bother reading what the course promised and instead just wanted to post an unfair review.

The app I need to build first will remain simple and is just meant to be an install and forget solution, so turns out PHP is probably the right way for me to go. I'm really happy with the course so far, and the teaching style and pace. I'm glad mistakes aren't edited out, because when he fixes a typo for example, it's a pattern interrupt that stops my brain from thinking "ok i get it already" and keeps me paying attention until I've reached a better understanding with more context. Thanks to taking this course, I will build my first app (not the course app) within the next week! (it's very simple)

In this course, Bernard takes you through everything you need to get started with developing a Shopify app using vanilla php, taking time to explain the code, how to debug it, and where to find the documentation in Shopify, so as Shopify updates it's API's you know where to go to keep your app up to date. This is a well thought out course, given by an instructor who explains everything you need. Top job!

By Patrick Pierre on 1/12/2022

This course does a pretty good job of explaining all the basic concepts behind Shopify App Development. If you are a developer with a basic understanding of backend development, this course will help you understand what Shopify App Development is all about. But I will warn you that this course will only explain the basic concepts behind integrating your app with Shopify. So if you were hoping he would also teach you how to code with PHP, you will be disappointed. If you decide to take this course, make sure you have a basic understanding of how to use Vanilla PHP or at least be ready to have the documentation open as you follow along.

Session 9: The instruction is not correct (but it does get resolved for other reasons) - Specifically, the initial inclusion of hmac in the INSERT query throws a query error and/or doesn not populate in the DB because the hmac value was removed from the $paramets variable prior to the INSERT. The missing hmac error message can even be seen in the video but is explained to be due to something else. The issue is resolved (hmac removed from the query) so the code is useable by the end of the video.

Lots of insightful information within the course, however I feel some deeper explanations of what and why we are doing things would make this course a lot better. For example app bridge was sort of presented in a way that leaves you wondering what it is actually used for or indeed how you could use it within an app. Similar Session Tokens are sort of introduced but never fleshed out and explained what they are really used for. There's lots of resource links offered and i'm sure some information will be hidden within those but the whole idea of a instructor led course is to save the student time by actually explaining these. I think if the instructor added to this course and created another section onto this course where a full shopify app from start to finish which actually accomplishes a given task would really help clarify a lot of the great but sometimes confusing lessons. I'd like to see perhaps the development of a full app that allows something to be accomplished on the admin side and then also integrates with the storefront also along with maybe a webhook or 2 included. This would really solidify the knowlege, especially where tokens and sessions are concerned. Overall though a good and recommended course that showcases what can be achieved but without actually creating a fully functional app, the snippets that are there work and are good but for example creating a script tag works but then never actually does anything beyond a console log within the store front which is a shame and a missed oportunity. Theres lots of code showing how you could do this or maybe do that for various situations but for me the course is really missing that final finished app start to finish polish and this is why this course is not 5 stars.
