Course Description
Hey guys! My name is Ben Cooper, and I’m a full-time songwriter here in Nashville, Tennessee. Whenever I tell people what I do for a living, I often get a response like, “Wow, writing songs is such a mystery to me.” Maybe you’ve thought about writing a song or have come up with an idea that would make a good song. Who knows, you might have already written tons of songs and are just looking to come back to some of the basics.
Whatever the case, this course is specifically designed to equip you with a working knowledge and understanding of the craft of songwriting.
In this first course, we’ll focus on de-mystifying the process of constructing a song. We’ll begin with questions like “What is the purpose or goal of a song?” and “How do a lyric, hook and melody work together?” Don’t worry if you don’t yet play an instrument… I’ll be giving a quick piano and guitar lesson to get you started. We'll also be looking at the importance of the opening line and what to do if you get stuck starting the second verse.
In the end, my hope is that you’ll feel confident of your ability to take an idea and develop it into a complete song. I’m excited about this course, and I hope you’ll join me!
This course, primarily taught through informal video discussions, will encourage the participation of its viewers by finding specific examples in popular music of each segment topic. This course contains about two hours of viewing time, with the option to participate in composing an original song based on the information discussed. As the instructor, I will be monitoring the discussion weekly and improving upon the course as necessary.

As excited as I was to begin this course, I am saddened to say that I didn't come away with any new information, nor perspective. For me, it would have added value to the course to have the instructor delve deeper into the songwriting process, motivation, perspective, etc. As it stands, this course is great for beginning songwriters, although not so much for those who are looking to delve deeper. Ben Cooper delivered the information in an engaging, intelligent way and I will look forward to a more in depth songwriting course with him as the instructor.

I enjoy the manner in which he speaks about songwriting. I am a conservatory graduate, years ago, however, I am researching ways to reach the teens of today in my songwriting workshops. I tend to lose some with teaching the music theory to creative students who actually need a cohesive approach to songwriting. To express themselves. This course has helped guide me to a different approach and I find that very valuable. Thank you.

I really enjoyed this course. The flow was seemless and the instructor was well educated. Have some examples of what he was explaining helped. It was overall a really great course, I would recommend this to anyone who is thinking of songwriting.

I just decided to become a songwriter, and this is where I'm starting by taking this course. I had a brief idea how to write a song but now I understand even better. It was really helpful. Thanks! If you are interested in songwriting and if you are a beginner, this course can definetly help you on that.

Very likable, earnest instructor. I may not be his target audience. The detail and visuals came, but it was more lyrical in emphasis than musical. Emphasis on ideas and lyrics for songs. Not on scales, modes, melody and other musical insights that I was looking for.

Its a good course and well delivered but it didn't tell me anything that I didn't already glean from a couple of books I read on Amazon; 1) Six Steps to Songwriting Success, Revised Edition: The Comprehensive Guide to Writing and Marketing Hit Songs - Jason Blume 2) Complete Songwriting Manual: A comprehensive songwriting manual for beginners to professionals - Den Arend I was confused regarding the difference between a pre chorus and a bridge and this is never explained. However, if you are a complete beginner, this is a good course to start with.

Ben is a professional at giving out his information. I find this course great for understanding structure of songs and how to analyse the chord progression. I didn't finish a song. it was good to have some examples of songwriting from artists. Great for the modern generation.

The Instructor made it pretty easy to understand and it met more than my expectations but could have more details on the structures and business of songwriting as far as pitching the songs you write but overall a great course. The Instructor makes it simple and easy to understand. I would recommend it to others wanting to learn the basics of writing a song from their ideas. Fred G.

Very good introductory course to the process of song writing. Ben does not bog you down with long and complex lectures but keeps it tight and meaningful. Even though I am an experienced song writer, their were many golden nuggets of information collected in this course.
