As an A&R rep at a music licensing company, I listened to many songs every week. Of those that are nearly there but not quite, it's the lyrics that often pose a problem: lyrics without a story, or too much cliché or no consistent theme. It's a myth that pop lyrics are meaningless. Pro songwriters spend alot of time on lyrics.
In those course you will learn how to craft lyrics like a professional songwriter and what errors to avoid. Specifically, we will look at
Wireframing: constructing a story progression to your lyrics
'Show, Don't Tell': the use of imagery
Metaphor
Intertextual Writing: taking inspiration from other works of art without ripping them off
Using the right language for your song's audience
Songforms and understanding the importance of structure
Cowriting
The course begins by looking at some very effective lyrics, then asks you to craft your own. There are video and text exercises to complete and you will have a chance to get my feedback on your lyrics or to post them for group feedback which may just help you find cowriters!
Whether you are aiming for a publishing deal or just starting out in songwriting, this course is for you. For new lyric writers it will set you up with sound principles, and for experienced songwriters it will help break lyrical bad habits. It is open to writers in all musical genres.
Here is an example of the press I've got for my own lyric writing:
'Eve has established herself as an artist of considerable sophistication, recognised for her powerful toplines and moving lyrics.'
-The Musician Magazine
I also hold a Master of Music in Songwriting as well as having written with well established writers (see my bio), so you can trust that the methods I teach are industry recognised.
Thanks so much for visiting this page. Please enroll now and I can't wait to read/hear your lyrics! You can enroll with confidence because of Udemy's 30 day money back guarantee.

This was a great course! I really enjoy Eve Williams' teaching style, very casual, never pedantic or overly academic in her approach. She's very much from the "tools not rules" camp of songwriting, yet she covers all the key concepts you need to think about to improve your lyrics. I'm going to miss her lessons (need to take another one of her courses).

Almost half of the course is listening to the instructor analyze songs that did a songwriting technique very well, but there's some great nuggets scattered around. Wish the 'Songwriting Course Pack' PDF had been included at the start to quasi-track the course instead of it being in a Dropbox link of the final section. She's also very receptive to the students and seems quite accessible unlike most instructors from sites like this

I couldn't recommend this course more! It's very informative, and it takes you step by step, so not I'm not overwhelmed but super motivated and inspired (with very concrete advices, examples, and steps given). To be honest, I find it useful not only for songwriting but also for writing poems and fairytales for kids! Thank you so much for creating this course!!!

Definitely a good match. Eve had a very nice vibe about her and the information she is conveying is spot on useful and appropriate for what the title of the course suggests, "Songwriting: How to Write Pro Standard Lyrics". The only suggestion i would have for improvement is the audio quality. It is loud on one video, soft on another, reverb in another and it would be nice to have an audio mastering engineer work through the videos to make them more coherent and easy to understand. Thank you Eve. Love your class

Eve is an excellent teacher and a very genuine person. Her videos are clear and to the point, with many well-selected examples and complementary resources. I think this course really stands out from other Udemy courses because Eve gives exercises to do and offers to review them. I find being active really helps you reinforce what you've just learned and pinpoint the areas that you need to work on. I think having a little practice also helps being less intimidated when you get to write your own songs! All in all, this course is very instructive and inspirational!

Learnt so much from this course! Really appreciate that Eve showed existing examples of the methods explained, what would be helpful though would be to see her create lyrics for each method explained, to really show the process of coming up with such lyrics. Thanks for creating this course, and it was a pleasure watching and learning from you.

THANK YOU !! I am touched by your class. Before I wrote for myself and I had trouble connecting to people. From now on, I understand that we must make them feel our text! Before I was frustrated, because I do not understand "why", the others did not feel my text like me. It's not because it's worthless, it's because I had to connect to them. I also learned to put my text to music, thank you. I will follow your other classes. :) (from france)

Eve's Songwriting course is really insightful and in depth. She uses excellent examples of stellar songs to point out what makes them so great and then uses her own songs as well to see how she's applied some of these methods in her own writing, which has helped her get song placements and other awards. Highly recommend taking this course - it'll inspire you to write!

I didn’t feel like I was the least bit helped on writing the purposeful connected and amazing lyrics I feel. It is all wired towards commercial writing which I am not the least bit interested in.
