This is a class designed for the average person who is ready to dive into making music with synthesis!  Whether you are a beginning musician, an active musician, or an aspiring musician - this class is perfect for you!

In Sound Design Fundamentals: Sampling, we will examine the essentials of Sound Design using Ableton Live and Propellerheads' Reason software and focusing on principles of Sampling. We will explore three fundamental topics:

  • Using samples for generating sounds, and the legal implications of sampling (And two pro tips for avoiding all the legal issues)

  • Using samples to generate new sounds through manipulation and synthesis

  • Using samplers to control drum sounds and sequence dynamic drum patterns.

This system keeps the technical jargon to a minimum and gets you making your own sounds quick.

The instructor seems SO nice and knowledgeable but this course is a glorified documentation/FAQ page that says "this knob controls this parameter." If you have never seen a sampler before, it will be a great course! If you have used a sampler before and are looking for the "next steps," this course unfortunately probably won't teach you anything new.

A little heavier on setting up key zones, and a little lighter on sound design, than I had expected given the title. Which was a bit disappointing because I had bought it hoping to get some more insight into developing that latter skill. To be more specific, I wanted to learn more about creating instruments out of samples. However, he did in fact spend a few minutes demonstrating enough of how to do that for me to understand how to develop that skill on my own, with creative experimentation. Solid intro course overall and definitely recommended if you don't know the basics of how multisample instruments work, since that's what this course mostly focuses on.

As always, phenomenal class, filled with treasures of tidbits that are superuseful. I keep coming back to Jason's classes, and even return to some of the ones I've initially taken to pick up additional material I may have missed the first time around. Because of this class, I no longer fear the sampler or simpler. I'm totally comfortable using them now. Thanks Jason! As always. :)

Course is interesting and great as a refresher. looking forward to the ableton sections as it is my main goal to become proficient using ableton. As with all of Jason's courses thoroughly addictive and enjoyable to learn!!

Really nice lecture, gets more and more interesting as you go through the class; better than the other Logic Pro course I take on Udemy.

By Chase Drake on 12/24/2018

Seriously, you could receive a degree level education from this guy! His knowledge on music is simply bonkers. He has a PHD in the topic so that would make sense. I have a few more classes offered by him to take (already purchased!); I am 2 courses in and I would say that it is the BEST money that I have spent on self education in a while. He really knows his stuff and is prompt in his responses to your questions. I can't wait to get started on my next class. His classes so far have far reached beyond what I expected from them; this one included. Chase

It's good stuff. I just think you should hit keys and make sounds more, even when the result will be weird because that would break up the talking and be a bit more interesting. I mean, we are all here to learn about sound design... part of learning that is learning what sounds messed up also.

By Tuomas Yli-Olli on 6/11/2017

The course was good. Perhaps after taking the synthesizer it felt that I didn't get too much new knowledge since big part of things used to manipulate sounds are the same between oscillator and sample based sounds. It would have been therefore nicer to go a bit deeper in only sampling related things instead of going through many same things as in synth course. Still good and worth it like all Jasons courses so far.

By Andre Silva on 12/6/2016

Good course overall, although perhaps too superficial on the subject of sampling. Works well as an introduction. Couple of technical glitches, but nothing major. I enjoyed watching it. Only two things worth mentioning: one, the 'bonus video' about Live's Sampler is way better than the one actually in the course and two, come on man, mute your goddamn phone ;)

By Mussavir Sheikh on 12/27/2015

This is a great course for beginners like me. J goes through the basic concept of sampler construction and use. The deconstructions of patches done on different sampler platforms are just great.Very informative and clear instruction on keyzones and velocity zones.
