I came to this tutorial by a reference of another tutorial. It gave me a basic information how the different elements work. The sounds I normal work with sound different. For complex sound design the information is to less to work on own sounds of professional instruments. The way of communication is clear to understand.

So damn good! What a brilliant intro to synthesis!

By Ken Beaty on 9/17/2020

Very basic, and sounds used as examples were quite uninspiring ! Sorry. Also, bonus videos (nearly 1/3rd of total) all specific to Ableton, which I don't use. However, overall a useful (very) basic course in subtractive/FM synth, so I think it fairly delivers the course objectives.

By Michael Flameling on 9/10/2020

This course was very easy to understand and I was confused about the different controls synthesizers have. This helped me understand how they work. Looking forward to the new class which is even more in-depth of synthesis.

Engaging and knowledgeable teacher

By Blair Backhouse on 7/10/2020

nice explanation of the fundamental principles of synthesis so far

By William K Akana on 7/10/2020

Just finished the course. Jay is really good about taking steps slow and thoroughly so that you learn the basics. It's a very basic overview of the main parameters found in synthesis--which is say it doesn't go very in depth into sound design itself. It's more like a course showing you the basic controls of, say, how to fly an airplane and less on how to make the airplane do tricks (which the latter is what you will have to learn on your own). Overall, even though I've been producing music for a year or so, going over the controls with him has further solidified my understanding of synthesis and I am grateful for the value of this course.

Amazing! Really useful course for learning the basics of sound design with synthetisers. Feel a lot more comfortable now using them and I know what the core functions do. I recommend it to anyone that has no knowledge of synthetisers.

It is really interesting that this guy is one of the most rated ones. I am guessing that there is no competition or what.
Random youtube musicians teach way better than this guy.
I respect the effort. However, from a professional person, I would expect something professional. The guy looks like he doesn't know things. It was the worst tutorial I have ever seen. Period.

By Patrik Hkansson on 6/7/2020

Gets down to the needed basics without overexplaining great!

By Petros Agoston on 4/24/2020

yes it was according to my presumtion

By Stefano Guidone on 4/21/2020

I had no previouse knowledge on synth, but I had some insights from how to modulate sounds thanks to experience with audio effects (e.g. compressor, gate, etc.).
Very nice and easy to follow explanations of the single details and the attention to how the sound change after changing parameters. Very nice the deconstruction strategy, in order to learn more on our own about how a synth can work and how preset were made working like. Thanks!!
