Course Description
This is a hands-on, project-based course designed to help you move beyond the "Big 6" clauses into advanced querying techniques.
We’ll start by reviewing the basics and conducting multi-table analyses, including basic joins, self-joins, cross-joins, and unions.
Next, we’ll cover different ways of working with nested queries by writing subqueries and common table expressions, or CTEs. We’ll walk through examples of subqueries within the various clauses, rewrite subqueries as CTEs, introduce recursive CTEs, and compare these techniques to other options like temporary tables and views.
From there, we’ll break down each component of a window function and review common window functions like ROW_NUMBER, RANK, FIRST_VALUE, LEAD, and LAG. We’ll also cover general functions for working with different data types in SQL, including numeric, datetime, string, and NULL functions.
Last but not least, we’ll take the concepts we’ve learned and use them across a series of common data analysis applications. We’ll deal with duplicate values, apply special value filters, perform rolling calculations, and more.
To wrap up the course, you’ll work on a project as a Data Analyst Intern for Major League Baseball, and use advanced SQL querying techniques to track how player stats like salary, height, and weight have changed over time and across different teams.
COURSE OUTLINE:
SQL Basics Review
Review the big 6 clauses of a SQL query along with other commonly used keywords like LIMIT, DISTINCT, and more
Multi-Table Analysis
Review JOIN basics (INNER, LEFT, RIGHT, OUTER) and introduce variations like self joins, CROSS JOINs, and more
Subqueries & CTEs
Learn how to write subqueries and Common Table Expressions and understand the best situations for using certain techniques
Window Functions
Introduce window functions to perform calculations across a set of rows and discuss various function options and applications
Functions by Data Type
Discover the many SQL functions that can be applied to fields of numeric, datetime, string, and NULL data types
Data Analysis Applications
Apply advanced querying techniques to common data analysis scenarios, including pivoting data, rolling calculations, and more
Final Project
Leverage everything you've learned to track how Major League Baseball (MLB) player statistics have changed over time and across different teams in the league

I think Udemy should add a full screen option there is no such option to zoom in the content to full screen. I mean seriously it's a small feature which you should consider adding. it's a coding course we need to see the codes clearly

Great course overall! Really enjoyed getting to learn these more advanced topics and it was a great course to really see thought breakdown and organization for each step! Only reason I did not give it full stars was because there were some typos, which I understand did get addressed (thank you for those updated notes) and once in a while the solutions to some problems were topics/code that we didn't go over in the course itself. I understand that learning new concepts is great, but personally, it would have been nice to have those solutions being used with what we went over specifically (either add it specifically in the teaching section or have another solution with the original concepts introduced). This happened very rarely to be fair and still a great course overall!!

Yes, the course adds to the skills I need for my job and reinforces foundational SQL concepts. I typically use the analysis elements more for finding patterns when I'm looking into an issue, but CTEs have become essential handling inserts/updates as well. I've also developed a better understanding of our workflows at my job, because so many things that go wrong start with an SQL script that is triggered on a user action, and it's missing a key JOIN or WHERE constraint, which causes compounding issues downstream. Usually, the problem is buried somewhere in the details of a large series of CTEs.

the cursor placements are sometimes a little annoying when trying to see whether there are commas etc in place. Otherwise I can't fault it. A bit quick, but I rant through this course with next to 0 prior SQL knowledge so had some learning to do as I went. For someone with prior SQL experience I imagine the speed is spot on. Only other thing I would have liked to have seen better explained is the way that the Data sources are loaded and the connection to the database etc. A bit more explanation around how and why this works would enable me to be better prepared for ingesting my own data and joining to my own sql source servers for future capability.

Maven courses consistently impress me, and this Advanced SQL course is no exception. It is exceptionally well structured, concise, practical, and easy to follow. There is no unnecessary filler—every lesson is purposeful, clearly explained, and focused on real-world application. I highly recommend this course to anyone looking to strengthen their advanced SQL skills.

Alice was such a great instructor, the way the course was structured made sense and each section felt a bit more advanced than the last, this is the perfect course for going beyond select from where group by having order by. Explanations were clear with good examples and practice problems. As always Maven Analytics offers great value.

The pacing of this course was exactly what I needed to do some upskilling and fill in some knowledge gaps. What I appreciated the most was that it was not just a "watch and learn" approach, but the assignments really put you to the test. Also, the cadence of introducing a topic and then doing the demo, was very helpful to start with a birds-eye-view of the new material, and then a deep dive. Thank you!

This course goes through a wide range of functions and strategies to use in SQL. She explains the ideas well without taking too long, and uses examples to illustrate them. The assignments, demos, and the final project that I got to do myself were amazing and definitely helped me understanding everything a lot better.

Great pacing, straightforward and clear explanations. Prior to this course I was intimidated and confused by CTEs and had no idea what window functions were. Now I have a better understanding for using CTEs, subqueries, window functions and more. This course has made me feel more confident with continuing my SQL learning and practical application

This particular course with Maven Analytics is definitely a stepping stone for me in understanding how data analytics using SQL really works. Alice is a wonderful teacher, her short videos on YouTube made me fell in love with SQL all over again, and thats the reason why I persue this advance course, her way of explaining things is the easiest and most simplest way to understand. I highly recommend this course to anyone who has interest and willingness to pursue sql advance analytics.
