SQL SERVER ADMINISTRATION: GETTING A JOB (Udemy.com)

A personal guide on how to secure a SQL Server Administration Job and the requisites the student needs

Created by: Raphael Asghar

Last updated March 2017

Our take

Based on the ratings of 149 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in March 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a short career guide, not a technical course. It runs about 66 minutes across five lectures in a single section, and it is built as the last step after instructor Raphael Asghar's other courses: Learn T-SQL, SQL Server Administration Parts 1 to 3, SSRS and SSIS. The description is blunt that people without that background should skip it. It covers what a production DBA job asks for, how to build a simple resume, where to post it, and which interview questions to expect.

Reviewers mostly like the honesty. They call the advice realistic and sound, and several say it gave them a clear starting point for a first junior DBA role. One student reports landing a DBA job after working through the whole series, and another credits the instructor for sharing his own experience instead of making things up. The complaints are small. One reviewer felt it was rushed and lacked the structure of his other courses, and another wanted recommended videos for going further. Across 149 reviews it holds a 4.6 rating, with 92 five-star votes and six at one or two stars.

The course was last updated in March 2017, so the job site advice may feel dated, and an hour of talk cannot replace practice interviews. It is not a standalone product. It only makes sense as the finish to the series. For people already through those courses, it is a quick sanity check on the job hunt. Treat it as a pep talk with a few downloadable resources. Everyone else can pass.

Best forStudents who finished his earlier SQL Server admin courses and want a plain guide to landing a first DBA job.
Skip it ifYou have not taken his earlier SQL Server courses, or you want deep interview drills and mock practice.

Pros

  • Realistic, honest advice on entering the DBA field, according to several reviewers
  • Covers resume basics, where to upload it and what interview questions to expect
  • Instructor draws on over 15 years as a production DBA, not generic career tips
  • Only 66 minutes, so it is easy to finish in one sitting

Cons

  • Needs all his earlier SQL Server courses first, so it does not stand on its own
  • Last updated in 2017, so job site and resume advice may be dated
  • One reviewer found it rushed, with less structure than his other courses
I thought Raf gave good advice for someone like me who is just starting out as a Junior DBA, trying to get their first job.

Labeled beginner, but really for people who finished his T-SQL, admin, SSRS and SSIS courses and are ready to apply.

Weldon, Raphael! You've done an excellent job and it will be a continuous reward for you both in this world and hear after. I do salute your patient and hard work.... Best of luck.

Very simplified . I have already recommend this to two friends .

The instructor did well with details and also providing his own experience instead of making it up. It would be nice if he had some Youtube videos that he would recommend for furthering my education on the job getting process.

I thought Raf gave good advice for someone like me who is just starting out as a Junior DBA, trying to get their first job. Nothing is guarantee in this world and no job is promise. But He gives good sound advice and good directions as to where to start. Thanks

Raphael Asghar is a competent 'Production SQL Database Administrator' and a great teacher. He is speaking for experience. Anyone can follow his footsteps by doing his 7 courses in Microsoft SQL Database administration here at Udemy than get a job as DBA and climb the ladder from junior DBA to Senior DBA in real LIFE.

By Alfred Smith on 7/7/2016

Great insights. I'll be looking foreword too your next video. I really appreciate this. Thank you and stay blessed.

By Lee J Hinkle on 7/5/2016

Not my favorite course from Raphael. It's informative, but it seems as though its development was rushed a bit. His instructional courses are worth every cent. This one lacks the strong structure and tone of the others.
