Course Description

This course is all about Apache Kafka

Understand HOW Apache Kafka works and learn its core features ON PRACTICE. This is 80% practice course without no useless demos!

Build custom Apache Kafka Producers and Consumers using native Java API. Also you will build projects using APIs for other programming languages like Node.js and Python.

Become a master of Apache Kafka by understanding and practicing its architecture and main features.

All project files and mostly used commands are available in the GitHub repository.

This is the most complete practical Apache Kafka guide here on Udemy that includes tons of practical activities. Most important is that you will learn how Apache Kafka works and knowing it you will be able much more easier use its features and fix mistakes in the future after you'll finish this course. You can have zero knowledge about Apache Kafka, Java, Node.js or Python. All will be taught from scratch, from basic to advanced features. If you want to get deep knowledge of Apache Kafka this course is for you!

We will start by installing Apache Kafka on your computer, VPS (Virtual Private Server) or Virtual Machine on your computer. You will learn that installation of Apache Kafka is pretty easy - you just need to download archive with executable scripts and run them. Also you will learn and practice how to run multiple brokers on the same computer.

Afterwards we will jump into tons of practice activities and use different Apache Kafka features and built-in scripts. You will launch Zookeeper, multiple Brokers, Console Consumer and Console Producer. Also you will test performance of the Kafka Cluster using built-in utility called Performance Monitor.

In practice sections you will perform multiple practice Apache activities:

  1. Create cluster with multiple brokers

  2. Create topic with multiple partitions spread across different brokers

  3. Create topics with replication factor that allows you to store copy of every message on different brokers for redundancy

  4. Produce messages using built-in Console Producer

  5. Consume messages using built-in Console Consumer

  6. Launch multiple consumers in the same consumer group

  7. Launch Performance Monitor for testing Consumers and Producers performance and speed

You will also learn and practice how to use Apache Kafka API to create your own Consumers and Producers

  1. Create Java Maven project

  2. Launch Producer and Consumer using Java

  3. Launch multiple consumers in the same Consumer Group

  4. Understand and practice difference between "subscribe" and "assign"

  5. Create Node.js project

  6. Launch Producers and Consumers using Node.js

  7. Create Python project

  8. Launch Producers and Consumers using Python

During the course you will need to view and edit text files. For that you will NOT use terminal. Instead you will use GUI application VisualStudio Code. Also all configuration files and project files are available in the GitHub repository. This means that during this course you will also learn how to use :

  • Git and GitHub

  • VisualStudio Code

With this course you will get lifetime-long access to more than 100 lectures and tens of practical exercises. After the course you will become a guru of Apache Kafka and will be able easily create custom Apache Kafka Producers and Consumers.

But most important is that you will UNDERSTAND Apache Kafka.

You will also get 30-days money-back guarantee. No questions asked!

I found this course very good, as it has helped me in understanding most of the concepts which were asked in the interviews that I have given recently. Had I take this course few months earlier then I would have surely passed those interviews. Please add a section on Kraft mode since now zookeeper is getting deprecated in Kafka 4.x.

By Tung Bui on 4/16/2023

It matches my expectation to understand what kafka is and how it works. I like the ways that author makes some mistakes then tries to explain what is the root cause and fixes it. Some contents are outdated but still valuable.

I would definitely rate this course a 5 star for being the only Kafka course with Node.js hands on(atleast among the ones I have searched). But wait that is not the only reason. This is a very beginner friendly course. Bogdon explains concepts as if explaining things to a kid. He teaches us how to read log files and edit config files as per our needs. He repeats things so that we get accustomed to the process. He shares us the necessary documentation needed. And to add a cherry on top, Bogdon has created a discord channel where we can post queries and get it answered from Bogdon or fellow members. Recommendation to Bogdon - Please create an intermediate course for Kafka where we send data with key-value pairs and other advanced Kafka features.

I am beginner in Kafka and course was helpful for me. I learnt how to install Kafka and basic commands. I worked on Windows, so I had to rewrite teacher's commands for it. I would appreciate if I had windows command from beginning, but I learnt bonus at least. As the course went on, it become to repetitive. It was still about start zookeeper, start brokers and consumer. For begginers like me the course is very good.

I learned a lot and now I have the big picture and how Apache kafka works and the practical experience I needed to start my own projects; I had some challenges too since when the course was recorded there's been some updates on the 'Apache kafka' side of things but when stuck I asked in the Q&A and Bogdan has been 'high available' and very helpful.

By Johel Carvalho on 8/25/2021

I was able to watch this course in three hours. It is repetitive, bit in a good way, because it highlighted kafka conceptually in a very clear manner. I now hope the creator makes another course exploring more the "keys" capability in kafka applying consistent hashing to it in a "real" world scenario.

By Jonathan de Booy on 4/5/2021

Reasonably well covered for a beginners course. Pretty easy to follow and builds up knowledge nicely across a few different languages. I would like to see some additions like creating topics streams and tables without the console version included, but perhaps that would make this an intermediate course. Overall quite happy.

This is a very good hands-on Kafka course for beginners. It won't make you an expert, but it certainly helps a lot if you are trying to wrap your head around Kafka concepts. I recommend fellow learners to follow along and perform all actions themselves. I had some issues with the Java consumer application. It seemed to behave in a bit of different way on my system than on Bogdan's when restarting the consumer Java applications. Not sure what the issue was.

By James Cho on 4/5/2020

I thought this was an excellent Kafka course. I like how the course flowed, getting your feet wet with some hands on examples before explanation of how everything works. I really liked that most lectures are less than 10 minutes. A couple of gotchas, I was using an AWS EC2 instance for my brokers, when I got to the Java section and started running producers and consumers from my local windows machine it was not working until I set the broker server property "advertised.listeners" to my EC2 IP. Bogdan does mention this in an earlier lecture but forgot by the time we got to the Java section where you really need it. Also, in the Python section, the consumer.py did not work until I added "api_version=(0,10)" to the KafkaConsumer constructor. Overall, it is a solid course to learn and understand how Kafka works with some good examples using different language API's. I would recommend it.
