So far (Lecture 8), it has been a bit confusing to be left in ignorance of so many things that are actually required to complete the proposed exercises. For example, that B# is just a C but all letters must be represented on the scale, so you have to write it as so. Furthermore, the quizzes about the scales should be merged and appear only after the explanation of both of them, as the info passed on the Minor Scale lecture (Lecture 5) is indispensable for the Major Scales Quiz (Quiz 1). This is also the case for Quiz 3: Key Signature Quiz, which would be much easier after learning about the Circle of Fifths. Actually, that quiz contains information which was never explained and contradicts other sources, such as the questions about the correct order of flat and sharp scales, or how to guess the major relative of a minor scale (only the inverse is taught). This has been quite a confusing course so far, but the subject in itself is interesting and, compounded by extra research on other sources, it serves as a good summary of important concepts to consolidate one's knowledge and awareness of music theory.

Excellent. I minored in music in undergraduate school about 35 years ago and I had forgotten parts of music theory. This course has been an excellent refresher for me and I really like the way that the instructor explained things. It has been very helpful! I am looking forward to applying what I learned as I play my guitar and flute.

I picked this course over others because each lesson sounded concise and polished: I was not disappointed. It was a great overview of some fundamental building blocks for me, as someone who played music many years ago but did not understand much theory. I feel it gives me a solid framework with which to learn more theory. I liked the teacher's presentation style so I wish this course covered some applications – as it stands, I don't know what to do with this knowledge besides take another course or fiddle around. To be fair, the syllabus didn't include applications so I didn't lower the score for it.

I am currently trying to take my lyrics and music production workflow to the next level. For somebody coming from an urban music background, learning the basics is trully revealing. I do really appreciate the course guys, pretty well-rounded and straight-forward at the same time!

I chose to rate this course early, but I feel comfortable leaving early. As the course states, it teaches music theory. If you have never had musical training before, everything may be completely confusing. You may should consider already having a brief background in music before taking this course. Having first some kind of piano lessons, or other instrument, would be strongly recommended. This course will build upon that and fill in some gaps.

Been playing music for years, figured this would just be a refresher of things I already knew before moving on to composition, but instead found a good amount of information on things I'd just never realized or thought about. Took away half a star because in a couple of the practice exercises/answer sheets there were a few rare wrong answers, would probably pay to go back and check through them.

This course has helped me understand many of the questions I had about music. The presentation was clear, but I did have to go over some of the lessons more than once. I believe I have a good understanding of the basic Major/Minor scales, their chords, and their intervals. Thanks.

I am very impressed with this course. What surprised me the most was how well it was put together. The audio and video quality is phenomenal, and each lesson builds on the next. I thought music theory would be a very complex topic, but this course breaks it down so well, it hardly felt like work. Highly recommend this course!

A few lessons into the Introduction to Music Theory course, I am already blown away at the quality of the content and how well it is presented. The instructor makes the information incredibly accessible without dumbing it down. The videos are just the right length, and the practice material and simple quizzes augment the videos nicely. I am excited to see just how much I will continue learn throughout this course!

By Brian Miller on 9/28/2016

This course is very well put together. I've seen many courses that look like they were just a filmed lecture, and this one is many steps above that. Each lesson is packed with information, and each concept is expertly explained, but in an upbeat, fun way! And the audio/video quality is one of the best I've seen. I highly recommend this course for anyone who wants to learn the basics of music theory. You will love it!
