Although I had high expectations for the course already based on the intro and projects, the examples of techniques in just the first few chapters is aligned with exactly the type and level of instruction that I was hoping to find for oil pastels--a higher level/higher quality than the intro courses I've seen so far. I will say that it's definitely more of a challenge if you tend to go towards realism and detail/accuracy more easily, but if you remember to take steps back and look at the intermediate stages and Matt's version of the project, you'll be able to course correct to practice the Impressionism.

This course was a great experience, however, my learning was limited. I think it would be better to have a course titled "The complete beginner oil pastel course". In this course, the jumps were too big. It's not practical to go from drawing a cube and a sphere to drawing a portrait that quickly. It's simply too difficult to progress that much in a 4.5 hr course. The sky tutorial was difficult. My suggestion to Matt is to break it down more, maybe go a little slower since it was hard to see how he was blending the dark grays with the dark and light blues.

This is a well organized course that covers a broad range of experiences. The instructor is easy to understand and the information is organized in a logical way that’s easy to understand and follow. My only tiny gripe here is that there seems to be some assumption of proficiency with art in general, which I can assure you I have absolutely none of. It wasn’t so bad that I couldn’t keep up with some effort, but I definitely had to slow it down and watch his movements really carefully a few times because I couldn’t understand how he decided where to place his marks.

The course is very good and I learned by watching the instructor as well as by my own mistakes. I give 4 stars because 1. There is a massive jump in complexity from the flowers painting to the sky painting and beyond, which was a bit of a surprise and somewhat frustrating to follow, and 2. Given that the instructor has access to the best available materials and most students won’t, it is almost impossible for us to come even close to what the instructor is doing on the screen. For example I would benefit much more from lessons using only a standard cray-pas set on a regular drawing or painting paper, and learning techniques that can be done with reaources available to a beginner student. But the materials are explained at the beginning of each lesson, so overall a very good course.

I learned a bit about colour as well as a lot about oil pastels. Impressed by the way the instructor gave a voiceover to his demonstrations rather than trying to talk and create at the same time which, from my experience of lazy instructors trying to save time, does not work. I will take more of his courses.

Matthew is a great teacher. The classes are high-quality and I love how he explains step-by-step. Oil pastel is an amazing medium, as you can be very bold in color and at the same time, very traditional. I love the projects and I'm very proud of my results. Hope he update and create more projects or courses soon.

I really enjoyed this course ! Mathew is an amazing teacher, and I'm going to buy his other courses for sure ! I learned a lot about how to apply the oil paste, the values and the tones. At some point, I decided to watch the videos, learn the theory and get the general idea, but I wanted to stay flexible and not to copy exactly what he was doing as I wanted to incorporate my own vision, so I let myself free a bit. I worked with Pentel oil Pastels and Paul Rubens (PR), so my results are a bit more in the drawing side as PR are harder than Sennelier, but I'm pretty happy with my drawings and with the course in general. Thank you, Mathew
