Course Description

Overview:

The Watercolor Workshop is a course designed for beginner and intermediate artists wishing to explore and improve watercolor painting techniques. This course starts with the basics and progresses gradually to more complex subjects and concepts. The 19 modules are logically sequenced so that each module builds upon concepts learned in previous modules. A variety of concepts, subjects, application techniques, and forms of watercolor are explored providing the learner with a complete exposure to this popular art-making medium.

Structure:

The course begins with an exposure to materials and tools that are used for painting with watercolor including brushes, surfaces, and various forms of watercolor paint. (Modules 1-2) Various application techniques, including wet on dry, wet on wet, dry on wet, using salt, painting with a sponge, and more are discussed. (Module 3) Color theory and color mixing are explored before moving on to aesthetic compositional strategies. (Modules 4-6)

Popular subjects are explored including still life and landscape painting. A woodland scene is demonstrated while teaching strategies for creating light and shadow. (Modules 7-8) Each step of each process is documented and learners can follow along and create their own paintings using the provided photo references. Cityscape painting follows while emphasizing the importance of simplifying complexities in a scene when painting with watercolor. (Modules 9-10)

Concepts such as image transfer, mixing skin tones, and developing contrasting backgrounds are all included in the modules focused on portrait painting. (Modules 11-13)

Various forms are watercolor are also explored. Pan or cake watercolors are used at various points along with tube paints. Watercolor pencil techniques are demonstrated including application and activation strategies. (Modules 14-15)

The course also explores mixing watercolor with related art-making media such as pastel, pastel pencil, and pen and ink. (Modules 16-17)

Gouache or opaque watercolor painting techniques are also covered. (Module 18)

18 ebooks are included with the course. Each ebook breaks each step down into step by step photographs and reinforces the concepts taught in each video.

As a complete beginner in watercolor, I am very satisfied with this course, not only was I able to follow the docent's instructions and copy his paintings, but I was also able to create my own using his tips and recommended techniques. Only the last lesson with the use of gouache was a bit difficult for me. Thank you very much!

I like his teaching, but in this course I felt he went very fast through subjects, without the usually exceptional quality of building each lesson solidly on the past. I am a novice to watercolor, and needed more opportunities to mix colors before we went straight into flesh tones. It also became apparent that I did not have the right colors for the lessons. Advance notice of which colors we need might have been more helpful. I like this instructor, however, and have taken four other courses from him, all of them excellent.

Honestly, it didn't feel like a beginner's course. I struggled to catch up in the beginning and did a series of scrubs to be able to keep up. It didn't help that I didn't have some of the pigments used and I had to make do with the closest possible thing. But I got the hang of it eventually and started to relax and enjoy the course even more. I'm happy with my works, I want to revisit my modules. I also want to sign up for more. :) I feel accomplished!

This course strengthened some basics I had. It gave me courage to go ahead with some new ideas it presented. I was pleased to see the instructor went over the first layers of paint and built up the subject, I learned that I could do this. Some new ideas about materials and their uses. I just started to try to paint with water colors and enjoy it but find I get frustrated to point of not wanting to continue to paint. Like I said it gave me "courage" to continue. I'm 92 and still learning. Isn't that great????

There were some things I really enjoyed and others that were disappointing. The color technique of the landscape was not realistic when it came to the grassy path, which tended to look like a stream of water rather than grass. I really enjoyed the colored pencil module and the Gouache module. The instructors use of layers of wash in the portrait painting was excellent and the finished product was excellent!

The theoretical part of the course could be more in depth. In my oppinion a lot of really important info (especially to a beginner) is missing. Some things are a bit confusing (colors -> warm/cool blues are opposite here than what you read everywhere else), not explained at all (how, where and why do you shade the pears in the still life section?) or you can find clearer info on YT for example (color mixing, how to avoid muddiness (considering split primaries)). I think if I didn't have some previous experience I would have had a hard time. However the part of the course where theory goes into practice is quite good. Various subjects and media are touched such as landscape, portrait, watercolor pencils, mixing media and even gouache (my favourite parts were the mixed media and the watercolor pencil part). You can clearly see how the things are painted and how the colors are mixed and applied. How colors are mixed becomes very clear also thanks to the footnotes shown in the picture when mixing is made. You always know what colors are in the mix the instructor is working with even when that mix has been pushed around again and again. This part is really well done! What I would have liked would be more than one example for the various subjects and a "more classical" landscape painting.

I had some little previous experience with water color, but I used to take a completely different approach to it. The course is very complete and covers a diverse variety of subjects. I have enjoyed it very much! I loved to create the paintings I did as I watch the videos (some of them). They helped me to know how to use watercolor in different aspects.

The painting demonstrations are good. The content and delivery are clear. The lesson on Color Theory - especially the bit about warm and cool primaries left me wondering how to make that judgment. How do I determine a primary to be warm or cool by pigment. Is this simply basic knowledge that must be learned? Does it change with mediums?

Thank you Matthew Fussell for a Great course. This course is so well laid out. The course is broken into easy to follow lessons and in logical order. The Instructor is clear and well spoken. Each lesson has a PDF (E-Book) for reference. I learned so much in this course. I intend on going over and over parts of this course and doing lots of PRACTICE as Matthew suggests. Thank you again.

This course was my first time experience to gain knowledge in watercolor and paying for instruction. The presentation, course material, and instruction were very professional and engaging. I would highly recommend this course for those who are interested in learning the medium! Looking forward to applying the experience to my artwork.
