Course Description

If you can shade a sphere, a cube and a cylinder, you can learn to shade any subject, no matter how complex.  This course will show you how.  In these five in-depth lessons you’ll learn how light operates on complex objects including concave forms like cups and bowls as well as organic subjects like fruit and vegetables.  This course even includes an introduction to cross-hatching, one of the most sought after drawing skills

The skills taught in this course are essential for anyone interested in continuing on to figure drawing.

THE ART & SCIENCE of DRAWING is a remarkable program that will teach you how to draw one day at a time. The program is simple, each day you’ll watch one video lesson that will introduce an essential drawing skill, and then do the recommended practice. THE ART & SCIENCE of DRAWING is overflowing with powerful insights into the drawing process and offers some of the clearest, most accessible drawing instruction available.  Many of the tools and techniques you'll learn here are rarely seen outside of private art academies.

This course is the eighth and final installment of an 8-part series. If you're a beginner, we recommend going through the entire series in the following order:
Basic Skills
Dynamic Mark Making
Form & Space
Measuring & Proportion
Contours
Shading Fundamentals
Shading: Beyond the Basics

If you've got some drawing experience, feel free to mix and match The Art & Science of Drawing courses to suit your personal needs as an artist!

This is an amazingly great drawing course. Brent Eviston is a wonderful instructor and this course teaches how to draw anything and everything by teaching basic skills that apply to every subject. The course clearly explains and demonstrates drawing shapes, simple and complex, handling the pencil, line quality, making different marks, measuring and proportion, creating values, contours, constructing complex shapes, perspective, shading amd much more- for anyone serious about drawing, this course has it all! i am so glad I've taken it and I will go back and repeat it. Thank you, Brent, for helping me develop my drawings skills and teaching me how to "see!"

It was indeed a great course. I have enrolled in courses from Brent before and I had no doubt that I will benefit from this one. I had struggle with shading human figures while doing his course on human figures, so enrolled for this one and I will now go back to human gestures to implement what I have learnt here. Also, Brent I am looking forward to have a course on portraits from you. Since I am accustomed to your style of teaching, I don't want to shift to a different tutor for learning portraiture.

What a wonderful course, I’m both sad and thrilled to have finished it. I’ve gained an incredible amount of knowledge and insight into drawing and I’m looking forward to developing further through continued practice , and by making drawings I could have never imagined attempting before I began the course. I would highly recommend the whole course, it’s something I will definitely revisit from time to time to refresh various ideas and techniques - next up is Brent’s Figure Drawing course, I seriously can’t wait!

This series of classes was a delight. I appreciate the time and thought Brent Eviston put into them. I always wanted to draw what I see. But I knew that I had no natural talent or ability. I did not understand how to put what I saw on paper. For at least twenty years, I thought that I would learn to draw... someday- when I have time. I retired this year. Now, I have some time. I completed the Art and Science of Drawing. I took my time, spending months drawing every day. Now I can draw what I see. Now, as I travel through the world, I put down my smart phone and pick up a sketchbook. Wow! Life looks better. Thank you, Brent

I have worked through the whole series in the Art and Science of Drawing over these last 8 months. I have gone from drawing stick figures to reasonably recognizable organic forms. This morning I drew a pumpkin that looked like Brent's! I think Brent is one of the best teachers I have ever encountered, and the journey of drawing was incredibly interesting, well planned and executed. I especially liked the art appreciation lessons at the beginning, looking at old masters. It gave a sense of purpose and direction in the whole course. The course was always interesting and dynamic. I can now draw. Thank-you

Just finished the whole "Art & Science of Drawing"!! I could not be happier! This course indeed changed my life. I loved drawing since I remember myself. But never chose to study or do it for living because I was convinced I'm just not talented enough. I'm 29 btw. When the quarantine started, I looked for a course online. I was also very sick with cancer that time. I chose this course and fell in love with drawing again. During the course, Brent always says "Drawing is not a talent, it's a skill" that changed my perspective about drawing. I'm not stressed about not being talented. I look at every drawing as a practice. And with the tools I got from this course, now drawing is something I know how to do. It took me almost 7 months to finish the course, but I'm happy I took the time to do it at my own pace and practice a lot every new skill. THANK YOU SO MUCH BRENT. I can't express my gratefulness to you in words. Now I enjoy drawing as never before. Now I know I want to and able to draw for a living but more important, it keeps me sane while battling cancer. So Brent if your'e read this, please know there is some boy at the other side of the planet, that you've gave that amazing present of the skill of drawing. I wish you and all the students here all the happiness and health!

I enjoyed the course and definitely learned some important ideas. One thing that I found deficient was the lack of references to download. It's very hard to try to draw an object without the actual photo. I finally took photos with my phone to use, but for some objects none was shown. I could see the shadows as Brent drew them, but without the reference, it was tough to really get it down. I believe that the reference should be available to the student for download and should also be shown in a box on the screen during the lesson.

I would recommend this course together with the intro to shading course. It continues the study of light and shadow on basic objects and adds complexity by moving to hybrid and organic forms. The use of the table lamp was an excellent way to play around with light and shadow. My drawings have become more realistic by using this shading process. I enjoyed every course in the A+S of Drawing series. They gave me a solid foundation and it was great to see my drawings improve with each successive course. Thanks to Brent for creating the series and sharing his techniques.

I've attended the 7 courses of The Art & Science of Drawing from basic skills to advanced shading. I've learned so much with these courses! For me they reinforced fundamental drawing skills. I wasn't a complete beginner and I've followed the Art & Science of Drawing lessons in parallel to in-class lessons (painting and figure drawing) but they gave me invaluable tools to improve my sketching, drawing and even painting skills. Thank you so much Brent Eviston for these 7 courses! I really enjoyed your vibrant artistic energy. Now I can't wait to attend your 2 figure drawing courses. I've already bought them!

I just finished the last course on shading. I started with course one and followed through each and every lesson. That was April 2018 and it is now mid August, 2018. The shading examples push you to the next level of drawing. Throughout the series Brent was class A in responding to any problems or queries. He really does care about his students even though they may be thousands of miles away. Brent motivates you, with practice, to become a competent artist. This course is just the beginning. Brent's course helped lead me to my next artistic interest: drawing landscapes and further shading courses!
