The Professional Guitar Masterclass (Udemy.com)

Learn The Tools Used By The World's Top Professional Guitar Players.

Last updated August 2017

Our take

Based on the ratings of 6,046 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in August 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a fretboard and music theory course for guitar players who already have a few chords under their fingers and want to know why things work. Michael Palmisano, a GIT graduate and the founder of Guitargate, walks through the CAGED system, diatonic harmony, chord function and non-diatonic changes across four levels and 136 lectures, about nine hours in all. It is not a song course. The audience list says so plainly: no songs, no licks, no tricks. Udemy labels it all levels, but the description asks for at least six months of playing first, and the reviews back that up.

The 6,000-plus reviewers mostly love the clarity. Long-time players say it finally connects theory they had picked up piecemeal, and a couple mention coming back to it years later as a reference. Palmisano's energy gets credit for keeping dry material watchable. The complaints are consistent. The videos were published in 2015 and the course was last updated in 2017, so the production looks its age. One two-star review says the CAGED and pentatonic shapes go by fast with no close-up on the fingerings, and that nobody answered questions. A four-star reviewer found the exercise approach monotonous and wanted example songs to apply the theory.

Against the beginner-focused courses it sits beside, this is the one for people who can already play and want to understand the neck. Roughly 3,600 of its 6,000 reviews are five stars, which suggests most buyers got what they came for. Skip it if open chords are still a struggle. For players who have been at it a while and find improvising feels like guesswork, it's a solid pick, provided 2017-era video is not a dealbreaker.

Best forPlayers with six months or more under their belt who know chords but not why they work, and want to improvise without hunting for notes.
Skip it ifYou're a total beginner, or you want to learn songs and licks rather than theory and neck maps.

Pros

  • Reviewers say it ties together theory they had gathered piecemeal from books, other courses and even Berklee Online
  • Covers CAGED, chord function and non-diatonic changes in a step-by-step order that students call complete and watertight
  • Palmisano's energy keeps dry theory watchable, and long-time players keep returning to it as a reference
  • About 59 percent of 6,045 reviews are five stars, with fewer than 200 at one or two stars

Cons

  • Last updated in 2017 with video first published in 2015, so presentation and camera work look dated
  • A two-star reviewer says shapes go by fast with no close-ups and questions went unanswered
  • Exercises are mostly film yourself applying the theory, with no example songs, which one reviewer found monotonous
This has been the most informative resource for guitar for me. I don't even remember when I first bought it. But, over the years I keep coming back to it to understand something which I missed.

Listed as all levels, but the description asks for six months of playing and low-star reviews say true beginners get lost.

This course is a four part, interactive, step-by-step, all HD video course which teaches you everything you need to play with complete confidence and control in any genre of music!

Professional players don't "hunt and peck" or play without a plan. If you're getting paid to do studio work, tour with a working band, or even just play out in you local town, you need to know your instrument front and back, and know how to sound like you. This course is designed to give you exactly that.

Get beyond tabs. Get beyond memorizing note for note. Learn how to improvise and play with ease around the fretboard!

No tricks or gimmicks! If you follow the course and work hard, you will feel confident playing in any genre, over any changes, with anyone, anywhere, and be able to put your own personality into the music! It's really not that difficult if you try!

For the price of one month of private guitar lessons, you can have unlimited lifetime access to a world class guitar curriculum with real individual feedback from a professional instructor!

Lectures feature all HD videos with multiple camera angles (so you can easily see the neck), downloadable fretboard diagrams, custom jam tracks to play along with, and detailed lesson text. If you post a question or a video link in the discussion forum, I will personally respond with real individual feedback! I try to check it daily.

No matter where you are in your playing, this course will fill in the "gaps" and break down the neck and music theory in a simple, and most importantly, applicable way.

While this course is geared to players with at least 6 months of experience, you will go from the very beginning to playing over complex non-diatonic changes leaving no stone unturned.  There isn't a more comprehensive course available anywhere.

After completing this course, if you wanted, you will have the tools to be a working professional guitarist... Or, you could just be a great guitar player and have a TON of fun.  Either way, I personally GUARANTEE you won't find another course as streamlined, simple, and effective as this one.  I've spent my whole professional life crafting this unique approach to the guitar, and I stand by it 100%.

The success I've had with my students has been nothing short of outstanding! Check out these student testimonials:

  • Gerard Bellini - "I attended Berklee online. Although they hit all the topics, you are the glue that puts it all together. My hat is off to you. Thanks!"

  • Erick Plascencia - Washington, D.C.  - "I'm amazed at how good your program is. I've learned more in one week than I have ever taught myself in the 10+ years that I've "played" the guitar!"

  • Bob Turitz - Eagle, CO  - "Seriously, I have never learned so much in the past 25 years than I have in the last few months! I love your teaching style!"

  • Graham Baughman - Louisville, KY  - "Having played for 20+ years, all blues stuff, I am glad to finally learn the neck. Thanks for building a great way to learn! There is no other web site like yours! Thanks!"

  • Jim Ferrie - Shrewsbury, England   - "I've been playing guitar for 45 years and your lessons and style of teaching is second to none. It is my most important find in my quest to learn guitar! I have never been more motivated to learn!"

  • Chris Reynolds - Hertford, England, UK  - "I've been self taught for 12 years mostly by tabs and songs. I haven't seen theory explained in a way that makes so much sense, and I've spent many years looking!!"

  • Ryan Endersby - Fredericksburg, VA  - "I have improved my ability ten fold. I finally feel comfortable on the fretboard and having individual feedback is AMAZING! You will learn your instrument!"

  • JC Senatore - Blacksburg, VA  - "In 2 months, I've gotten better than I have in the past 2 years. No joke."

  • Tristan Johnson - Concord, CA  - "I love the site, and it provides an excellent value. After a decade of strumming and learning a lick here and there, my playing is blossoming and I'm inspired in a way I don't think I've ever been!"

  • Donnie Eastman - Atlantic City, NJ  - "I've had lessons for years and never understood theory and modes. In five minutes I felt that “ah-ha" moment!  Awesome!"

Lastly, I would like this course to be as interactive as possible, so if you wish to post videos completing lessons, or have a question about any specific lesson, please post the YouTube link or the question in the discussion forum and I will respond to you ASAP.

Good guitar course, complete in every aspect of music theory, perhaps just a little dated in the way it is presented. The videos were in fact recorded a few years ago, in the early days of online lessons. However, the teacher covers the topics with clarity and the supporting documentation is sparse but good. Perhaps some more sheet music with practical examples to clarify the concepts would have been useful. In fact, the course does not teach breathtaking pieces or solos but lays the theoretical foundations for making music with the guitar, particularly electric, but the concepts can then be applied to acoustic or even other instruments. You have to practise a lot, practise on your own with the bases provided, and getting to the end of the course takes a lot of time. But then you definitely have very good theoretical musical knowledge that can be useful in various contexts. For the price at which it is often offered, it is certainly worthwhile and one appreciates the gradual and in-depth course structure. All the topics can be found elsewhere, but then you have to give them a logical structure. There are certainly more modern courses, but generally at much higher prices.

For many years (almost 15 years), I have been trying to accumulate knowledge on guitar playing from different readings and courses but none of them was comprehensive to address my curiosity. The course of Mr Palmisano is comprehensive and wonderful. It touches on each aspect of a good guitar playing falling in the course subject matter (guitar fretboard and music theory applied to guitar). I would recommend to anyone committed to playing guitar in an knowledgeable way but who has a basic knowledge of music theory.

Hi Michael, I am enjoying The Professional Guitar Masterclass on Udemy. Been playing guitar for more than 20 years now, and your course was something that I wish that existed when I was starting out. Though I am studying Jazz Improvisation at Berklee Online for an advanced soloing path, I know that this course will facilitate in blending all my knowledge, from blues, rock and jazz. I also like the idea that there will be a certificate once it is done, something that will show not just my dedication, but also the fact that I learned a comprehensive curriculum (GIT Based) from a Valid and Qualified Instructor (a GIT Grad). You have a talent in simplifying intricate material, and can break them down to tiny components that a learner will surely grasp, regardless of level. Thank you, Maestro! -Juan Karlo Aranzamendez(葉卡洛) Taoyuan, Taiwan-

Nice playing and theory-wise all watertight and complete! However, the exercise approach is rather monotonous ("...go and film something that applies the theory we've just learned..."). I've done 3/4 of the course follow carefully, absorbed the content before moving on, but it's quite dry and I am losing patience. My suggestion would be to spice it up with some example songs to apply the theory (like Desi Serna in his book "Fretboard Theory 1 + 2"). Also, in my opinion the approach to blues in level 3 is not a very authentic (unless you're into country phrasing).

By Lloyd121 on 4/19/2020

It's inspired me a great deal it's the best online guitar course I've ever come across. I am beginning to find it difficult with so much to learn. A lot of this stuff really needs to be applied practically over time in the right context. Perhaps more jam tracks would help even though there are several. Maybe so well-known guitar songs as well to learn and apply the theory. My concern is I'll forget a lot of it I might not use like diminished arpeggios for example. That said, I'd highly recommend this course.

By Richard Ansara on 7/1/2019

Very informative course. Overlapped with a lot of things that I had been taught by an instructor and had been studying on my own, but the key here is that this is a curriculum and you proceed in a more logical fashion, which you don't get by randomly watching online videos. If you want to move on from the basics and learning other people's songs into understanding the structure and logic surrounding most of the music that you hear, or want to write your own, this course is a great option.

By Kieran Giles on 6/11/2018

This course was the single most enlightening thing in guitar I've ever seen for the money. You will not find a more complete and engaging piece of content anywhere on the internet. This guy will take you from a clueless idiot to someone who knows what they're doing. I've been seriously practicing this content for months and I'm not even half way through it all (able to play and remember the content at speed). By the time you get to the end of this course you'll be able to play in any key, recognise any progression and play either rhythm or solo parts depending on what's required. This course is the toolbox for the rest of your guitar life. I mean it. This has a the full spanner set, the cordless mini drill, all the drill bits and screw attachments, all the hammers you need, the works. After that it's up to you what you build with it.

By Travis W-B on 1/10/2018

This is a phenomenal value for the cost. So badly wish I had taken this years ago. Partly because it is so comprehensive, it is nearly impossible to pace the course perfectly. For me, the triads section was such an overwhelming piece to get through, that I would have loved more exercises here. I ended up chopping up the triad chart PDF to make it easier to go through all the 1st/3rd string triads in every inversion, then all 2nd/4th strings, etc. This was the main area where I got a little discouraged. There was a lesson or two where the mix wasn't great—i.e. the speech audio was too low relative to the guitar, but honestly I can't complain. There is so much value packed into this course that I am going to go through it all over again. To sum up: √The overall instruction quality is excellent. √The depth is unquestionable. √The support is good. √The total value is fantastic.

By Luis del Valle on 11/22/2017

Overall, I received the same and more than the 3 years with a guitar teacher. As I am now headed off to music school to major in guitar, this comprehensive course has filled a lot of the gaps which I had, especially in music theory, composition, and technical skills. Michael is such a warm and enthusiastic individual who empathises with the student, and objectively, he want you to succeed. I wish there were more people like Michael in the world; it would then be a better place.

By Steven Dolling on 6/30/2016

Half-way through and my overall impression is great. I do feel like there is something missing and yet there is still plenty to work with. What I'd like to see are the occasional chord/scale/ect. diagram cut into the shot. There is room for it and at one point gestured at, instead I defer to the PDF. Which is OK, I am glad to have them. All in all, it's a ripper of a course and I've enjoyed my time with it thus far.
