The Total Beginner's Guitar Course (Udemy.com)

Complete Beginner? This Is The Guitar Course For You.

Created by: Michael Palmisano

Our take

Based on the ratings of 1,995 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in August 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.

A free, 85 minute starter pack for people who have never held a guitar. Michael Palmisano, a GIT graduate who runs the Guitargate site, covers buying a first guitar, naming its parts, using a tuner, finger exercises, open chords, power chords, basic progressions and a taste of distortion and palm muting. Sixteen lectures in a single section, so it plays like one long lesson. The audience line says complete beginners and reviewers back that up; the syllabus shows nothing beyond first-week material. It has drawn about 73,000 students and just under 2,000 reviews with a 4.4 average.

Reviewers like the teaching more than anything else. The instructor is described as funny, straight to the point, and clear enough that one self-described non-beginner said the course finally made the fundamentals click. One reviewer without a guitar yet still found the advice on what to do before playing useful. The complaints are about scope. The only two-star review in our sample calls it very basic and mostly an advert for the full courses on his Guitargate site, and doubts anyone could play anything after finishing. Another learner notes the lessons lean electric and wanted more for classical guitar. A four-star reviewer found it harder than expected, which says more about guitar than the course.

Free, 85 minutes, single section, no certificate, last updated in August 2017. That age matters less here than in a tech course because open chords and tuners have not changed, but the personal feedback offer in the description is nine years old and nobody in the sample mentions using it. Beside the other courses on the guitar page, this is the quick, no-cost way to find out whether guitar is for you before spending money. Take it, then move to a longer course.

Best forComplete beginners, or people who own no guitar yet, who want a free hour to test the water before paying for lessons.
Skip it ifYou can already play a few chords, or you want a course that gets you through whole songs.

Pros

  • Free, and short enough to finish in one evening: 16 lectures, about 85 minutes.
  • Clear, joke-friendly teaching that reviewers call easy to follow and straight to the point.
  • Starts before the first chord: how to buy a guitar, name its parts and use a tuner.
  • Goes past open chords into power chords, palm muting and distortion.

Cons

  • Very basic and stops short of a full song; one reviewer calls it an advert for the full courses on the Guitargate site.
  • Last updated in 2017, with a single section and no certificate.
  • Leans electric; one reviewer wanted more for classical guitar.
Great course and instructor! He goes through each lesson thoroughly and it's easy to follow along as I am totally a beginner.

Truly for people who have never played; the only requirements are a device and the wish to learn, and no guitar is needed to start.

Course Description

Hello and welcome!  If you are a COMPLETE BEGINNER you are in the right place.

I am an award-winning GIT grad, a 15+ year professional guitarist with 50k+ students, and the founder of Guitargate - the only guitar site sponsored by a major guitar brand, PRS Guitars.

This free course is geared towards people who have either never played or haven't picked it up in a long time. SO even if you've struggled before, you will learn everything you need to know to start playing!

I promise you can do this, and I will be with you every step of the way.

We will go over everything that beginners struggle with, for example:

Are my fingers to small?

Am I too old?

Do I really have enough time? (YES YOU DO!)

What kind of guitar do I need?

AND WHATS MORE?

If you want PERSONAL FEEDBACK, post a YouTube video to the lesson discussion and I will personally watch it and give you professional feedback - just like in-person lessons.

I am the ONLY guitar instructor on Udemy that does this for their students, and it's FREE.

I want you to love playing the guitar, and I want you to learn with me for a long time. If you need any help along the way, please message me and I'll get right back to you.

I take great pride in being available to my students, so please don't hesitate to reach out!

Best of luck and I'll see you inside :)

it was fantastic his techer know what is new player is and he know what he saying for real my only problem is his not talking about clasic guitar his talk about a lot of electric thats what im not good with but the way he teach his so good like number one

By Clint Pollard on 3/10/2022

It was more than I expected, I didn't pick it up as easy as I thought I would. It was probably more my lack of knowledge than your teaching skills, but I didn't get as much as I was hoping so I had to just rate my experience as average

By Marek Chramosil on 12/24/2018

Only very basic, pretty much an advertisment for full courses on author's website. I know, it's free, but I can't imagine anyone being able to play anything after just this.

By Ron Argueta on 11/3/2018

For a beginner course I felt I learned more theory than from other beginner courses I've taken online. I've been playing for over 20 years and have never understood how to play in key but in 1 short lesson Mike explained in in a way I understood. Now I know what I need to practice and learn to be able to play in key with other people.

By John McGregor on 5/16/2018

This is a great course. I can't believe this is free. There are many guitar lessons available online but up until now everything I tried just wanted me to copy techniques without understanding why I was doing those things. This is the first resource I have used that has given me a clue about music theory. I have already purchased Michael's Masterclass and look forward to starting that after I have completed this class.

By Andrew Krack on 4/22/2018

well paced intro to guitar. i want to know more. it's obvious Michael has much to offer and i'll be taking other courses from him as they come out. lost half a star for using "right" as a filler word too often. otherwise he spoke well and articulated the topic for a beginner to follow along.

By Michel Alves Almeida Leite on 2/6/2018

Although I know most part of what the course teaches, I found out a good way to remember essential things and new practicing exercises, and I liked every thing. The instructor keeps the pace slow for absolute begginers, but not that slow so it doesn't become boring. The audio is great, loud and clear. Absolutely recommended! Keep Rockin' out. Greetings from Brazil!

Lots of great information and introduction to an array of topics. However, this is too fast to be called a "Total Beginner's" course, and may be overwhelming to a true beginner just picking up the guitar. They need the material chunked into smaller pieces, and with a slower pace, especially the music theory. You can easily spend weeks or months just mastering the chords. That said, the instructor is very good and is clear in his explanations. Just look at each video as dipping your big toe into a huge pool, and be prepared that you'll need to take a deep dive into each later.

By David R. Henry on 12/4/2016

This was a very good starter course. I have played acoustic guitar for over 25 years and have taught most of that time too. I also perform as a live performer in my area. Although most of this was demonstrated on the electric guitar, I found it very useful for my playing, especially the abbreviated chords. The power chords section was great too.

By Larry Johnson on 3/26/2016

Its clear and concise! I would find interesting how you piece together the single notes between the chord in your little country riff! I realize this is different for different music, but I find it is rarely actually covered in most classes! How does the theory work--even if the most fundamental. After all, it is this that I think will most help learning to play different songs by ear!
