The Ultimate Digital Painting Course - Beginner to Advanced (Udemy.com)

Everything from drawing fundamentals to professional painting techniques

Created by: Jaysen Batchelor

Last updated March 2022

Our take

Based on the ratings of 17,146 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in March 2022. No course pays to be reviewed.

Jaysen Batchelor and co-instructor Austin Batchelor teach digital painting from the brush tool up to photorealistic painting and character design across about 27 hours and 126 lectures. The structure is fundamentals first: drawing basics, perspective, light and color, color theory, then full still lifes, people, environments and a grayscale to color method. It's built for people with no drawing background who own a tablet and want a structured path rather than a bag of software tricks. Around 109,000 students have enrolled and it holds a 4.6 from roughly 17,000 reviews.

Students like the early win. The course opens with drawing an eye, and several reviewers say that one lesson gave them confidence before the theory arrived. The pace gets called neither too hard nor too easy, and the two instructors get credit for explaining concepts clearly. The complaints are consistent, though. The exercise files are Photoshop documents, and one reviewer on a different app says almost none of the assignments can be done that way, even though the intro promises any software works. Some reviewers found the later sections drift into painting time lapses with thin explanation, and one frustrated student's gripe is unnamed layers that turn following along into a guessing game.

Last updated in March 2022, so expect older interface footage, though the fundamentals haven't aged. Beside the Procreate and Krita courses in the same category it is the broadest option, and the one to pick if you want drawing theory and painting covered together. If you already draw and only need software technique, a tool-specific course will be faster. For beginners working in Photoshop, this is a solid buy.

Best forComplete beginners with a tablet and Photoshop who want drawing theory and digital painting taught in one place.
Skip it ifYou paint in anything other than Photoshop and want to follow every assignment, or you already draw and only need software tips.

Pros

  • Opens with drawing an eye, so beginners get a real result early on before the theory starts
  • Fundamentals sections on perspective, light and color, and color theory come before full paintings
  • Students say the two instructors explain key concepts clearly at a pace that is neither too hard nor too easy
  • 27 hours across 18 sections reach people, environments, character design and a photorealistic style

Cons

  • Exercise files are Photoshop documents, so a reviewer on another app says most assignments are off limits
  • Some later sections are painting time lapses with little explanation, according to lower-star reviews
  • Unnamed layers and unfixed resource files frustrate followers, and the last update was March 2022
the course is easy to follow and the instructors are very good a explaining key concepts.
Mootaz Soltani, a student

Genuinely beginner friendly. The stated needs are a tablet with stylus and any painting app, but in practice Photoshop makes the exercises far easier.

Jaysen Batchelor

At the age of 17 I began a 6th month internship with an animation studio out of Utah. After my internship was up, I was hired on to build backgrounds and to design props and characters for animation projects. I then began to do my own freelance work on the side through networking and using online freelancing sites. Now I work as a freelance Illustrator and designer working on my own time from where ever I want.

Frankly speaking, I am a bit frustrated with this course because I spent much time on it. Most of videos in the later part of the course are only painting time lapse without general explanation & teaching. I am not sure why this course is so popular and probably the rating is also misleading to Udemy students. I know teachers in this area usually teaches casually, but there are better courses than this one.

I took this course with no significant experience in drawing. I'm a non professional photographer since 2010, so I'm used to creative software like Photoshop, Lightroom (mostly), Final Cut Pro (a lot too) and even Pages / Keynote that use in my job context in order to create presentations and or one pagers. All that to say that I had a certain background in digital creative softwares, layering, etc. but nothing really in drawing. I got this course in the process of a children book that I'm writing and I wanted to illustrated it myself. I told myself that after this course if I don't feel like I really can illustrate the book (because of a lack of drawing skills), I'll just hire an illustrator as most authors will do anyway, but I still wanted to try. So far, my drawing skills are significantly better. I even surprise myself. It is not because of great hidden talent that I have. It is because I'm willing to learn, and that I practice simple techniques taught it this course. The greatest takeaway right now for me (I have reached the mid of section 5 on 18) is that any drawing or image, however complex it might me, can be broken down into simple lines and shapes, and then brought back to a certain level of detail. I'm not confortable right now into doing an extreme amount of details, but I found that the foundation of a good drawing is not in the details, especially if the simple parts of the drawing are off. So based on this course, I do believe that anyone willing to learn (like in anything else really), can learn to draw with that course. Furthermore, I found that drawing, is a very soothing hobby in itself. I feel I can stay concentrated without mental distractions for a long period. And I find myself wanting to draw instead of going social media, which I believe is a hidden win. I find myself wanting to do more drawing, come back to it. Thank you to both instructors and their teaching skills.

I am greatful to find this course. It covered everything I needed to learn. You two even covered about different surfaces and everything else was spot on. I am more confident in my art than I used to be. techniques like roughing in & corrections also made more confident in both digital and traditonal painting. I used to have a fragile ego and wanted everything correct at the very first brush stroke which deep down i knew is very difficult. Thank you so much for covering every aspect even outside of the fundamentals. the landscape tutorials are a WONDERFUL.

I don't believe I've finished it, actually! I've made several attempts to complete the course, with some gaps lasting more than a year. Even Austin looks different in the profile photo than I remember from the beginning! But here I am.))) Thank you for this amazing course! There are tons of useful information and I am sure I will be back for some lectures and exercises in the future.

This was one long course but worthwhile . I took up pencil drawing 18 months ago but wanted to try digital. Didn't want to go pricey in case it wasn't for me so bought a 10 inch drawing tablet for £35 to plug into my laptop. Quickly realised it was so different to pencil work so looked up courses and found this one. The course length is enormous and looked at a few sections you can see for free and, together with the good reviews, decided to try it. The first real class - the eye looked way too difficult as a starter ( I peeked at the end of the lecture before I started) but even I got through it using, by the way, Medibang paint, and was very impressed with what I created. So I knew the lesson style worked for me and th guys knew their stuff. The breath of the lessons took me through the basic, different painting styles and concepts and I found myself doing lots of extra work to practice. I am really pleased with the results and, if some failed, it didn't bother me so much as I knew, next time, I'd improve. Some people have said the guys left in their mistakes as if it was amateurish - however I found that worthwhile as I could see them thinking out loud and seeing how they worked through problems. I really didn't think I would produce what I did so it's great kudos to the guys and they did a great jobs of taking me through the course without any feeling of superiority - I will definitely take another course with them. The course is long - it's taken me 2 months to complete but I diverted onto another course (colour pencils) inbetween to ensure I was not going too intense. The last long part of the course - photorealistic was a real journey - no way was I going to make it - however I took it slowly and got there in the end. Negatives - only 1 I can think of - when doing some work the curser disappears and I couldn't see where they were drawing and had to stare to see what was being changed. However I did notice, 3/4 through the course, that the side rulers were showing acting like cross hairs - not sure if they were always on show in the earlier parts. I now feel pretty confident about digital art - am I an artist? - no - that takes time and practice. What I am is someone who has gained a lot of skill sufficient to try a whole range of styles with the confidence that I can only get better. Thanks Guys - great course

It took me more than half a year to complete this course, in and out. While I definitely learned a lot and it is a worthy course to take, I can't say that I absolutely loved it. First, if you don't know any painting software, and you are not willing to pay 30 EUR/mo for the Photoshop, you are screwed and you can't really work on this course effectively. So, I had to complete some other course on another program (Krita) to continue working on this course. Second big problem - timelapses, there are so many of them and at times it is really hard to follow what the teacher is really doing there. Third problem, it is a kind of a teaser on many different areas - portraits, character design, etc., but it does not give you sufficient understanding of any of them to consider yourself "advanced". But, can't really complain, since to me it was really useful anyway.

The course is very good, well worth doing! Just advice you use a digital painting program that you master well or use Photoshop, although the course teachers do not focus on any software that you will use, it would be more appropriate for you to use software that you master well or Photoshop itself, so it is possible to take the course more quickly.

By Serena Rossi on 6/26/2020

This course was a fantastic experience. It was very useful to me and I appreciated the teachers' competence. I highly recommend it because it is complete and well done. The most surprising thing is that it took me, step by step, to create artwork that I never thought I would be able to do! Thanks a lot!
