Course Description

"Wow, this is great stuff.  If anyone ever asks you 'What does a Project Manager do?' direct them to this course." – Leah Henig.

Why is being the accountable Project Manager the best position to be in, and how can you use that accountability to create the authority you need to ensure project success?  How can you convince a reluctant team that creating a work breakdown structure will make everything else in project management easy?  How can best practice process solve almost any problem, no matter how complex, and why is the precedence diagram much more important than the Gantt schedule?  What are the eight risks you should always consider putting in your risk register?  What is the rule of thumb for how much risk budget you should have left as you go through the project, and how can you defend keeping it when under pressure from management to give some up?

What are the huge benefits of backfitting user scenarios when you don't already have them?  Why should you make friends with the procurement department, and all supporting departments, and how can they help keep your project out of trouble?  What are the top 3 drivers of project success, and how can they help save your project from the top 3 causes of failure?  How does broadcasting a success oriented mindset to the team help you solve problems when you don't know how?  And why is telling the truth about problems early the most important thing you can do to protect the customer, the sponsor, the team, and your own reputation and career?

This course goes well beyond technical theory, covering the top ten most important real-life lessons you need to know to be the most effective possible project manager and leader of teams.  In less than two hours, it can make these lessons yours.  Several real life stories are included of how to handle difficult situations with your teams and your management.  A real WBS and precedence diagram is provided for a $140M aerospace project.  PDF downloads are included of all the key points, along with a professional complete Excel risk register template.

Defiantly fine tunes what I have been doing for 30 years by the seat of my pants ! Mostly for small companies, turn-a-round and my own businesses. I'm hoping there is a software package that pulls all this together to save the notebook flipping.

I strongly recommend your course. It is a rare thing to encounter a trainer that is able to convey so much nuance to their narrative as to make it SO interesting that you not only are able to follow and retain the contents much easier, but also not observe the passing of time while doing that. A big THANK YOU!

By Sally Carter on 8/27/2025

I have been a PM for 18 years and still found this course to be insightful. It is very good at outlining the most important tasks for a PM to be successful with important reminders to always be truthful. This can sometimes be difficult when you are pressured to do something impossible. I only wish there had been a good risk register template included since risk management is the essence of project success. I have been looking for one, for quite some time and have not found one to fit our business.

By Daniel Ross on 6/30/2025

The information provided is practical and realistic. Their is a consistent message of put the time into the correct process to get the best possible results. Presenting the common pressures that project managers often experience and how to work through them is helpful.

This training came at the perfect time for me. Bill builds on existing PM knowledge, offering practical tips on where to focus for project success. I plan to use the phrases he provided to advocate for both the team and myself as our organization embraces greater PM accountability. I even made a cheat sheet of his tips to keep at my desk!

It is so enlightening to connect the learnings when listening to real case examples. The voice and the way the messages are shared feels like a coaching session, and I'm impressed on how much I'm retaining on the key things he's explaining. It feels like kind reminder, but to continue improving.

Interesting content and I like the use of tests at the end of each section to routinely check understanding of the content. I would have liked to see more examples of materials used and this would also have mixed up the visual content a bit rather than just being a view of the speaker. Overall a good way to earn 2 PDU's for PMI.

I'm always interested to hear what other people identify as lessons learned. This course is overall pretty good and the content is very good, however it is a little weird to be quizzed on what are basically the instructor's opinions in many cases. Granted I agree with most of them, but I just think if you are quizzed/tested on something it should be on verifiable content that is objective or at least of referenced/verifiable information.

By Stefani Olsen on 11/7/2023

My favorite PM class. Very applicable content, I am bookmarking this for future reference especially around messaging. This class definitely actually improved my PM skills appreciably in a short time investment. Bravo! I will be looking for more training from this instructor.

I chose this course to acquire PDU's for my PMP certification. I like courses that aren't too lengthy and break up the material into small sections and this accomplished just that. Although my project management involvement in my current position is limited, I found loads of useful information within this course and would recommend it!
