For years I've been teaching Ableton Live in the college classroom. As a University Professor, my classes are sought after, and, frankly, expensive. I believe Ableton Live can be learned by anyone, and cost shouldn't be a barrier. This class uses the same outline and syllabus I've used in my college classes for years, at a fraction of the cost.

This is Part 1: The Interface.

I will be making 6 (six!) complete classes in order to bring you the most comprehensive manual on Ableton Live production techniques ever created. Each class has Sets, sessions, and experiments for you to try on your own and follow along with.

And of course, once you sign up for Part 1 - The Interface, you automatically get huge discounts on all the upcoming parts (the next 5!) of this class.

You will not have another opportunity to learn Ableton Live in a more comprehensive way than this. Start here.

J. Anthony Allen is an Ableton Certified Trainer and a Ph.D. in Music Composition and master of Electronic Sounds. His music has been heard internationally in film, radio, video games, and industrial sound, as well as the concert hall and theater.

He currently is an adjunct professor of composition at the University of St. Thomas, Macphail Academy of Music, and the CEO of Slam Academy in Minneapolis.

Praise for other classes by J. Anthony Allen:

  • "Dr. Allen does it again with his music theory for electronic musicians series. This course really opened up everything I learned from the 1st section and now I understand more about the composition side of things for music. I highly highly recommend this course to anyone!!! Really opened my eyes to many things I wasn't aware of."

  • "The Best Teacher Ever, who makes you understand the ins & outs of Music Theory by all mean without giving what you don't want to know."

  • "I have never had any formal training in music at all. Trying to learn all the notes and how everything translated was a serious challenge. After going thru this class, Dr. J has totally brought down the barriers. The content was very useful and was easy to grasp for me."

Complete entry course on Ableton Live, with a broad view on all the basics. This is good to get started, but not sufficient to become fully proficient. This is, off course, a beginners course and a Part 1 form a multi-part course, so no surprises here. I find the instructor knowledgeable and the course structured. Even though I think I'm an experienced Live user (started with version 4 and took some other courses), I enjoyed getting a thorough view on Ableton 9. But I do hope to get more into depth in later parts (Synthesis, Production etc... and eventually Max and some of the Suite instruments). I did use the 2x speed or 1.5x speed option when following along, even though that destroys much of the music samples. There are quite some coughs in some of the later lectures, so please take care of your health!

The best place to start if you've made your New Year resolution to get into music production. This first part in the series is basically an overview of the whole Live interface with all the basic concepts and modules explained. As always, Jason's delivery is clear, informal and easy to follow. The rest of the series looks promising as well.

I definitely know a lot more then when I didn't take this course. All I knew was how to open the program, now I know key commands, what the mixer does and how to use it, envelopes and etc. Ableton is no Longer intimidating. I still got room to learn but now I feel comfortable in it so........thx.

An excellent class for beginners who have no knowledge of how to navigate their way around and operate a professional DAW. The instructor provides a clear, casual and concise manner of which to learn the principle foundations of Ableton Live, thereby turning your studio experience into a joyful, more meaningful one. Thank you very much, J. Anthony Allen!!!

The course provided me with a decent grasp of the Ableton Live 9 interface as well as the basics of what Ableton Live 9 can do. I feel confident enough to proceed with further courses in this series and I'm grateful for the generous course discounts provided. The trainer has a friendly voice and mood, and delivers the content in a fairly straightforward and casual way. Concepts are explained in a very general way which allowed me to get the gist of things. I was slightly bothered by the trainer's sniffing, which happened a bit too frequently. I also felt that the trainer often drifted around a bit, seemingly losing sense of the direction of the content. I would have preferred if the trainer followed more of a script to help keep his focus and to provide a smoother delivery. There were multiple times where the trainer made an incorrect statement, which made me immediately say to myself, "what, that's not right." Thankfully, the trainer corrected himself on these occasions. But seeing as this is a class that is not happening live, I believe the trainer should be inclined to correct mistakes in the recording. If the delivery was smoother I'd have given this course a rating of 4-4.5 stars.

This is a good tutorial. The explanations are clear and step by step. Very easy to follow and to work along. The downside is that the tutor wants to cover topics outside Ableton Live: mic placement, buying a sound card, what MIDI stands for, etc. Trying to cover so much stuff is a little bit tedious for people who know their basics. Also, and most problematic for everybody is that covering everything in around 3 hours is almost imposible. He ends up sacrificing not going into more detail in Ableton and at the same time, not being able to fully explain the general audio concepts. I would assume that if a person enrols in a course like this they would already know what MIDI is and they would already have a dedicated audio card. If they don't they will be able to find that information somewhere else, not in a course that should only deal with Ableton Live.

J. does a great job leading the student through the Live interface and highlighting the key areas. The only (minor) issues for me were that the sample set he used in several of the lessons was in a different location in the help view in my version of Live (9.5) - as another student pointed out, it was in the "What's New in Ableton Live 9?", and I had to search for the samples he used in the Groove Pool lesson.

Great introduction, covers the entire interface and how it all works together. Even if you have used ableton before, like I have, most is already knowledge you have, however you may pick up a few tips and tricks along the way. If you are just starting to pick it up, this is an excellent starting point for understanding the slightly different layout ableton uses compared to a lot of other DAW's around.

I've been using Live for a while now, but this was still a really useful course and I picked up a few basic things that I had been missing. If you're new to Live then you should definitely take this course. It's a perfect introduction and is well presented in a logical and simplistic way. I'm definitely going for part 2 and beyond!

Jason is an incredibly awesome dude, and here's why: He takes an insanely big and daunting task, in this case learning a new, complicated piece of equipment and completely strips it down to its basics. Ableton, a digital audio workstation, is basically a Mothership of audio technology culminated from the most recent, all the way back to the 80's and even further! I watched many other 'online-tuition' videos regarding Ableton and this, by far, was the most efficient; he really doesn't waste your time. He builds you up from easier to more complex. By the end of it I was like "Oh, I learnt that so much holistically and faster because of this clever deconstructing he does. Because of his vast experience in this field, Jason (a PhD in music!) chronologically (no more starting in the middle or at the end YouTube-style for me anymore, no sir!), breaks it down into even more bite-size, easy to chew pieces than most other 'teachers' out there can. Love it! Cheers Jason, much appreciated.
