For years I've been teaching Ableton Live in the college classroom. As a University Professor, my classes are sought after, and, frankly, expensive. I believe Ableton Live can be learned by anyone, and cost shouldn't be a barrier. This class uses the same outline and syllabus I've used in my college classes for years, at a fraction of the cost.

This is Part 2: Recording and Warping

In this class, we cover everything when it comes to recording in Ableton Live - including Recording techniques in general.

  • Recording Hardware Needs

  • Recording Hardware Setup

  • Microphone Types and Options

  • Microphone Purchasing Tips

  • Microphone Placement

  • Audio Interface Needs

  • Audio Interface Purchasing Tips

  • Single and Multitrack Recording

  • MIDI Hardware Needs

  • MIDI Hardware Purchasing Tips

  • MIDI Setup

  • MIDI Recording

  • ...and much more!

I will be making 6 (six!) complete classes in order to bring you the most comprehensive manual on Ableton Live production techniques ever created. Each class has Sets, sessions, and experiments for you to try on your own and follow along with.

And of course, once you sign up for any part, you automatically get huge discounts on all the upcoming parts (the next 5!) of this class.

You will not have another opportunity to learn Ableton Live in a more comprehensive way than this. Start here.

Praise for other classes by J. Anthony Allen:

  • "Dr. Allen does it again with his music theory for electronic musicians series. This course really opened up everything I learned from the 1st section and now I understand more about the composition side of things for music. I highly highly recommend this course to anyone!!! Really opened my eyes to many things I wasn't aware of."

  • "The Best Teacher Ever, who makes you understand the ins & outs of Music Theory by all mean without giving what you don't want to know."

  • "I have never had any formal training in music at all. Trying to learn all the notes and how everything translated was a serious challenge. After going thru this class, Dr. J has totally brought down the barriers. The content was very useful and was easy to grasp for me."

Ive been working with ableton for a year, however ive never has a solid knowledge about the basics. This is a great class that explains the foundations of using whats available about the software as is, and uses examples you can work with to follow along if needed.

Love the instructor’s pace. I like to download and listen to the lectures during my commute then I watch them from home again at night when I can see the UI and practice on my own. I purchased his whole series, it’s been very helpful in learning Ableton 9 and 10

By Andre Silva on 1/7/2017

Good follow up to the first part in the series. It's basically an overview of the basics of recording into Audio & MIDI tracks as well as basic warping concepts and techniques. Doesn't go into a great deal of detail but it's a good place to start if you're new to music production. Just an FYI - it covers a lot of concepts you'll already know if you've used other DAWs so don't expect this information to be brand new just because you're new to Ableton Live.

By Wyatt Patterson on 12/13/2016

100% worth it. I would obviously have a similar setup to replicate what you see done in the video, but it is so much easier for someone like me to follow along through a well-thought out tutorial. Having the knowledge to do certain things you may otherwise not learn in a course will most likely give you new creative ideas and ways to do what you hear in your brain.

By Martin Della Vecchia on 4/9/2016

The lesson is generally good and the tutor evidently knows his stuff. The downside to me is that the lessons' contents are somewhat loose. Sometimes the tutor sidetracks and it is not really clear the lesson 's content and structure. It would also be perfect have decent musical examples.

By Math Erao on 2/20/2016

There was some informative stuff, but there was a lot of filler information. Most of the beginning stuff was just generic recording information that was stretched out beyond what was necessary. And most of the MIDI stuff was already on bonus videos from the first part of the course. Luckily I only paid the $9 but it was a lot to go through with little gain and I'd be very upset if I'd paid $59 for it. I'd suggest fleshing this out more in terms of actual Ableton material or combine it with another lesson. Another tip would be when you clear your throat/cough/etc at the beginning of a lesson, edit that part out before it begins. Sorry to be overly critical. I loved your last one but this left me wanting for the time and price.

The best course I have taken on Warping. That sums it up! Without a doubt the best explanation and ease of use, that one can get. It leaves you enough room to go explore. The class goes by quick, so you can be on your way at being proficient in Ableton Live. How lovely! What are you waiting for? Get it or get one, then get his discount to get the next. Or do what I did and get them all with the seventh being MAX for Ableton Live. I would recommend this to my friends for sure!

By Bram Brouwer on 9/10/2015

The second step in the course will give you all (just as in the first part of the course) you need to know about a specific item in Ableton Live at the right pace, with good examples and clear explanations. I learned everything I need to know about recording and warping in Ableton Live. Jason Allen, there's nothing more to ask about, great course! On to part 3!!

By Anderson Fuentes on 8/18/2015

Another great video from Jason Allen, he is very knowledgeable of Ableton. I am an experience Ableton user, but everytime I take one of Jason's courses I learn a few more things about Live that I did not know. Looking forward to the next course.

By Greg R on 6/11/2015

I appreciate Dr. Allen’s teaching style - Ableton Live can get complicated or get detailed when you are new to it. Dr Allen has the ability to take a complicated process and break it down into easy to learn lessons. He uses screen shots of Ableton and gives you audio examples when he is teaching the class to help you see and hear the changes that are made - this approach is really helpful for me. I can move through the lessons as fast as I want and I can repeat the lectures on topics I’m new to and want to ensure I understand all the steps. I’ve learned a lot more than I thought I would with his classes and feel comfortable taking on new projects I have planned ahead.
