For years I've been teaching Ableton Live in the college classroom. As a University Professor, my classes are sought after, and, frankly, expensive. I believe Ableton Live can be learned by anyone, and cost shouldn't be a barrier. This class uses the same outline and syllabus I've used in my college classes for years, at a fraction of the cost.

This is Part 3: Producing & Editing

This is a really deep class - tons of content, tricks, and tips. I'm giving you SIX sessions to play around with. One of them (the first one) is even a finished, published complete track of mine. We are going to be covering how to produce using Ableton Live, starting from working with clips and going all the way up to some advanced production techniques. Topics include:

  • Looping

  • Locators

  • Key Mapping

  • Reversing Clips

  • Time Signatures Changes (session and arrangement)

  • Meter Changes (session and arrangement)

  • Adding harmony

  • Working with vocal samples

  • Creating beats

  • Working with one-shots

  • Slice to MIDI for beat production

  • Drum racks (!)

  • Consolidating

  • Recording/Writing Drum grooves

  • Layering Synths

  • Freezing & Flattening

  • Audio Effects

  • Automating Effects

  • Side-Chaining

  • Routing & Bussing

  • Resampling

  • ...and much more!

I will be making 6 (six!) complete classes in order to bring you the most comprehensive manual on Ableton Live production techniques ever created. Each class has Sets, sessions, and experiments for you to try on your own and follow along with.

And of course, once you sign up for any part, you automatically get huge discounts on all the upcoming parts (the next 5!) of this class.

You will not have another opportunity to learn Ableton Live in a more comprehensive way than this. Start here.

Praise for other classes by J. Anthony Allen:

  • "Dr. Allen does it again with his music theory for electronic musicians series. This course really opened up everything I learned from the 1st section and now I understand more about the composition side of things for music. I highly highly recommend this course to anyone!!! Really opened my eyes to many things I wasn't aware of."

  • "The Best Teacher Ever, who makes you understand the ins & outs of Music Theory by all mean without giving what you don't want to know."

  • "I have never had any formal training in music at all. Trying to learn all the notes and how everything translated was a serious challenge. After going thru this class, Dr. J has totally brought down the barriers. The content was very useful and was easy to grasp for me."

Jason was very clear and precise and unlike others seemed confident and reassuring and I felt very comfortable with him. I def intend doing more courses with him as I've been trawling the internet for months gathering info here and there and still getting nowhere. So I'd highly reccommend this course and thanks again to Jason for making it so much fun and I look forward to making some new music in the coming days.

After courses Part 1 and 2 this one is going deeper into editing and arranging. It is still introductory and giving an overview and (still for my personal taste) a bit too basic, but I have been using Ableton Live for some years now. I'm just using it as a complete update and am eager to get to the advanced stuff. I did learn a few smaller things here and there. For me, it could be a bit faster and more condensed, but Jason knows his stuff. The examples are sometimes a bit improvised, but I really relate to that... going with the flow, trying and elaborating. I does help you to see the track being built before your eyes.

The content of this class is very well organized. I've sat staring at Ableton trying to work through it with short videos from others and that helped me understand a small bit of information but through just this first lecture I feel much more confident in my understanding and application of this program. I'm incredibly excited to start the next course.

Fantastic course, best one in the series so far. The content is presented clearly in a clear and relaxed style. Had fun watching this and learned some good concepts and techniques. Thanks Dr. J., I'm quite enjoying this series.

SideChaining.....omg. No one knows how long I been searching on how to do this. It is like a must on every Hip Hop or Trap type beat. What a relief and its so simple. I didn't even know where to go. Now I do. I am truly loving these course's.

Excellent Course. Every class I've taken of J.'s has been great. I also listened to his albums on Spotify and he is a very talented artist. He's a great teacher as well, makes learning a delight. Thanks J. for spending the time to impart your knowledge for those of us eager to learn.

I've followed the three first courses of Ultimate Ableton Live in the past week. It was really fun and I could follow every step without any problem, although I'm not a native English speaking person and had no valuable experience in making electronic music. Great Teacher!

I just finish watching course 3 from the series, I can't wait for the next one. I have been using Ableton for some years now, I have been taking these course because I am always looking to learn more about Ableton, specially since there is so much to learn about this Daw. I have learned new ways to use the program and polish on some old ones. I am so glad that it is broken down into different parts. Jason Allen explains everything in a comprehensive and engaging way. Thanks Jason and Udemy for great quality tutorials.

pretty good production

By Dan Allosso on 4/20/2015

Instructor is clearly an expert, and more important, a real-life user of Live who knows what features, tips and tricks will be most valuable to us as we learn. The real test of a course's quality, though, is whether you go back to it again and again while practicing the techniques on your own. This course is great for that, both in the organization and presentation of the info. LOTS of things to try, all lined up in a way that ought to lead us toward producing our own tracks.
