Course Description

"Great information presented in a clear manner, great visuals to support it, and an extremely chill and non-intimidating style by the instructor." - Kim R.

Imagine the world without color and you’ll soon realize the importance of this topic. In art, color is often what attracts people to a painting to begin with, and it’s part of what gives the artwork a sense of emotion. In order to know how to use color, you first have to truly understand it. Using a thorough, well-rounded approach, professional artist and arts educator, Jill Poyerd, takes students through the science and history of color and then guides them through a close-up look at color strategies used by the Masters.

Once a foundation is established, students learn how to build a painting palette and select paints. The instructor then demonstrates color mixing methods, including discussions on color matching and color value. The course ends with several hands-on activities meant to solidify the concepts learned. All of this is explored through over 3 hours of lectures and multiple student activities. Topics include: What color is, how we see color, pigments versus light color modes, the experience of color, emotion and color, color strategies, strategies used by the Masters, the painter's palette, paint colors, color mixing, color matching, color value, hands-on practice, and a final painting activity. This is one of the most comprehensive color theory courses available.

very useful and informative

By Linda Davis on 8/27/2023

Outstanding online course. I feel guilty that I purchased it on sale! Explanations were thorough and accompanied by visual samples and animations. I am trying to achieve balance in my landscapes (oil). I plan to go back thru this course and perform the activities to reinforce the knowledge and techniques shared. I live in the southwest U.S., so colors here are different than lush countrysides or energetic coastlines. I look forward to more from this instructor and artist.

That was a very good course. I'm not a painter, though I am an art admirer, so the practical application is lost on me. I took the course to understand color, color combinations and how to choose colors for design and I came away with a very useful understanding of the subject. It is taught in a very relaxed manner, with many practical exercises (I really enjoyed plotting great art on the color wheel). I would definitely recommend this for painters but even for non-painters who want to understand color in art and in life.

I chose this course because I wanted to know more about color. My preference was more about RGB color working and experience related to light. This course is not that and really more focused on the YMCK spectrum and pigment mixing. Despite that it is an informative course for a beginner who doesn't know that much about color and mixing and wants to learn more about it. The woman has a soothing voice and pleasant to listen to. The dramatic music that occasionally accompanies it is not my preference. In short: good course for someone who knows nothing about color in pigment mixing and wants to know more about it.

i have been through the lectures once and intend to think about concept, review nots and Q&A, and then go back in and do the exercises until principles become somewhat automatic/thoughtful/ingrained in a good way. i mark this 4 and a half because on line can never earn the last half that comes by relationship/face to face/hand on the shoulder/hand guiding hand..... THANK YOU

This was the wonderful dive into Color Theory I was looking for. As some of the best learning, you'll get concepts and strategies, but to gain solid mastery it will take practice. Lots of good handouts. Only downside is for the Color chart referenced their watercolor course with the indication that if you wanted more details on this topic, take the course. Don't mind a plug but to not provide equal info-I don't plan to pursue watercolors at this time so take a whole course to ensure I see it all.

Really informative course! I learned a lot about color theory and how to apply it in my own art journey. Will definitely reference in the future when I need a reference on the subject.

Wow, I feel like I need to take this course again just to absorb all the information. So well created, with many examples, lots of hands-on experiments, and easy to follow steps. I love how it's making me think about the world around me differently in relation to color. I think it will greatly impact my painting, though I am definitely a beginner in that realm. I want to look at her other classes now. I am already studying some of her water color technique classes and learning a lot there too.

Great match. I will certainly go back into it many times. PLEASE eliminate the sound track!! It is extremely distracting and really conflicts with Jill's voice. Very annoying.

By Claudia Stahl on 3/3/2022

This course gives a thorough foundation for understanding color and the value of choosing a color scheme to express a particular mood or feeling, and why different pallets tell a completely different story or evoke a different emotion. I appreciate understanding the core importance of color choices, their personalities, and how to determine why colors work well together and why some don’t. Great knowledge to have before dipping the brush into the paint. Thank you.
