How to make a Basic FPS game in Unreal Engine 4 from Scratch!

Our take
Based on the ratings of 1,382 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.
A free, five hour Blueprint course that walks through building a bare-bones first person shooter in Unreal Engine 4: character, pickups, a selling system, a HUD, and a simple AI enemy. Weston Huett starts from the third person template, one reviewer notes, and builds up from there entirely in Blueprints. It is aimed at beginners who want to see a small game come together quickly rather than learn engine architecture properly.
Reviewers like how easy the videos are to follow, and a couple say they learned more here than from countless other tutorials, or even from school. The complaints are consistent, though. The last section is a mess: two AI lessons are out of order, a step in the spawning lesson appears to have been edited out, and more than one student could not get enemy spawning to work. More experienced reviewers also flag sloppy Blueprint habits, with heavy use of Event Tick and little explanation of why nodes connect the way they do. Presentation gets knocked for mumbling and typos.
The course was last updated in June 2017 and targets UE4, so expect some nodes to differ if you are on a newer version; one reviewer got it running in 4.27 with workarounds, but nothing here covers Unreal Engine 5. Next to the UE5 courses on our Unreal list, this is the quick, free, older option. Treat it as a weekend experiment, not a foundation, and be ready to fix the ending yourself.
Pros
- Free, and reviewers say it is substantial for the price: 47 lectures and six quizzes over about five hours.
- Easy to follow along; more than one student says it beat hours of other tutorials for actually building something.
- Ends with a playable level: FPS character, pickups, a selling system, a HUD, and a basic enemy AI.
- Friendly, upbeat instructor whom even the critical reviews give credit for attitude and effort.
Cons
- Final AI section has lessons out of order and a missing spawning step; several students could not finish it.
- Last updated in 2017 for UE4, so some Blueprint nodes differ on newer versions and nothing covers UE5.
- Teaches what to click, not why; experienced reviewers call the Blueprint practices messy and Tick-heavy.
Great course learned a lot in the short amount of time. More than I learned attending an actual school and was able to build a working simple level.
Listed as all levels, but one reviewer says it suits people who already know basic Blueprint nodes, not total newcomers.

Course was amazing, but I did have a little confusion and difficulties in the AI section of the course. The videos "Different AI Types" and "Killing the AI" are backwards on the lineup. "Killing the AI" should be listed before "Different AI Types" so that caused a bit of confusion for me. Also, on the very last video "AI Spawning", Weston did something to make the spawning feature work, but it appears it was edited out as I can't get my spawn volumes to work properly to spawn my AI characters, and I followed every single step that he did throughout the course. The editing out caused some steps to be missed for that as a result. Other than those issues, this course was great and I can't wait to get started on another!

There were a couple problems with this tutorial towards the end with a couple lessons that were out of order and some small coding parts he left out of the videos that you still need to do, but, figuring out what to do on my own only made me better at Unreal and all the rest of these videos were so much easier to follow than any other tutorials I've watched so far.

Overall I think the course is good for beginners touching base with Unreal. I wish the lecturer would give a bit of a an in-depth explanation on why we would need to connect blueprints in a certain way. Lessons 44 and 45 are switched in terms learning the content in order. He kinda skipped how he implemented the AI Spawning in the world at the end (how he didn't explain where to deploy the Enemy Spawning Actor in the map but not an issue if you're able to figure it out yourself).

So far I picked up an input that i was looking for, it's simple but effective and needed. The flashlight lnput to turn a flashlight on and off. Also the spawn projectile event that allows a gun to fire. Also added some pickups which were very simple to understand. Print Screen definitely helps a lot when you are testing. Learned AI pawn sensing and AI spawning. Creating different AI enemies with different strengths. Will utilize these new skills in my future projects since now I have a better understanding.

It is a decent walk through of a fairly wide ranging set of topics that a beginner in Unreal, wanting to create a first person shooter style game needs to become familiar with. As a bonus, in introduces the topic of simple Ai NPCs. Was the completed project posted so folks can pick it apart? That's kind of a prerequisite for a good Unreal project tutorial. I was kind of annoyed that it was never really explained why the project wasn't started from the 1st person template, with a copy of the 3rd person template migrated over, rather than hacking the 3rd person to make a 1st person. This may also have resulted in confusion by beginners in that the author didn't appropriately rename the formerly 3rd person assets to match their new role. Inclusion of the NPC/Ai characters was nice, and enough to get people interesting in learning more without getting too complex.

I really like how he is not using the shortcut keys when making the blueprint. Nice slow pace so you can see and follow along without having to pause the video all the time.

Very good course, only problem i came across was the last video didn't work for me when trying to spawn AI. Nice quick course and would recommend to anyone new to the unreal engine

It's good crash course, its easy to understand what the instructor is saying. he keeps the videos short and simple, explains the basics which is pretty good! the only thing I missed is the lack of content. for example it would be awesome to make save points and a main menu. I mostly recommend this for people who want to quickly learn the basics of an fps game. Although if you are a total beginner in unreal engine 4, then you shouldnt rely on this course ONLY.

This is a great course and Weston is very personable as well as knowledgeable about making an FPS with UE4. I learned a lot that is going to be of immense help to me in future projects especially the game I am developing myself right now called " BattleForte ". However, even though he is human and made a few mistakes that he tried to correct there were several things that were frustrating for instance there was NO SELLING SYSTEM VIDEO even though I read it was fixed to show the Point System Blueprint so I figured out how to do this myself and shared it in the Q&A for everyone missing it. Also, at the end the AI Spawning skips a section of importance and there's nothing showing how to get the AI Spawn Blueprint working in the level. I added it and tried to figure it out but nothing happened but i'll eventually figure it out and share it to help others. Lastly, the videos are extremely loud on the intros/outros and somewhat quiet during the lectures themselves which is slightly annoying. I don't expect perfection but if you are going to promise certain things please deliver. Additionally, I think it's not cool that ppl are asking for help in the forum and half a month or more goes by and no response which is kinda insulting to us student customers but I imagine there's a good reason behind it. I would gladly assist you as a MOD if you need help, I don't mind at all. Would I buy from Weston again? Yes, absolutely, despite the few minor problems here, he is still a great teacher and the course overall is terrific. I learned a heck of a lot that was more than enough to get my game project development going further and that is exactly what I needed the most! Thanks Weston for making this course! I hope to see some cool updates and some improved and better courses in the future which I would gladly get as well!

It is pretty good, I really wish he would add more questions to the quizzes and make them harder. Update: Section 4 is incomplete! There is no selling system or points system. Section 5 is also incomplete, because there is no points system it is impossible to upgrade the guns. Section 6 is also messed up, lectures 43 and 44 are out of order and lecture 45 is incomplete the instructor never tells us to place the spawning boxes or what the final touches were to activate them.
