Course Description

This course teaches students how to build a template for a side scrollingshooter (shmup) game and then further build on this by adding a level of polish to the finished template. Students will learn to utilise Blueprints with Unreal Engine 4 as well as some important concepts which have started being referred toas Game Feel or Juice.
If you have an interest in using UE4 to develop games, learn to program using Blueprints, take a look at a classic arcade style game and learn some important techniques and theories behind making your game stand out from the rest then this course is for you.
Ive attempted to structure this course in a way that will allow someone whos never used UE4 to follow along and learn to navigate the interface as we progress, thus better usingyour time by avoiding interface specific lectures and allowingthe knowledge tobecome more quickly ingrained via the practical use of everything you learn. After covering some of the beginner level content and the interface is familiar the course will progress to cover some more in depth concepts behind Blueprinting and programming such as the powerful benefits inheritance can provide, randomisation and simple procedural generation. Hi, I'm Rob.
I'm a Game Developer with a BSc(Hons) degree in Game Technology.
My primary skill is as a programmer with experience using C# with XNA, Unity3D and C++ in UE4. However my interest in all aspects of design have led me to become proficient with many aspects of 2D and 3D design.
More than anything Im passionate about discovering what truly makes a game the most an engrossing and enjoyable experience possible.
Since graduating I've been privileged to experience working with smaller indie development companies and large national developers as well as working solo on many of my own projects and Game Jam events. I look forward to being able to share the experience Ive gained from these different aspects of design with all of you.

Great course but is more of a follow-the-steps type than a proper teaching tool to build you a complex foundation to work with Unreal.
(+) You'll make your simple game
(+) All assets are ready for you to use so you can focus on work in Unreal
(+) Although voice volume is low, it's edited so no annoying sounds or repetitive information.
(-) You follow the steps and in the end, you'll have the game but you end up with a limited understanding of how to use the engine itself. The tutor explains very basic stuff, which is great for complete beginners but at the same time expects them to immediately understand complex issues like classes, blueprint logic, and node programming which, on the other hand, is explained only briefly (or not at all). This leaves in you in a position of copying the tasks he does. He doesn't explain the most needed things like:
Why use this node specifically? Is it your preference or is it how Unreal requires it?
What are the alternatives?
What does the node do in detail?
How did you figure it out?/How do I figure out which nodes to use if I wanted to do it differently?
What other kinds of function nodes are there?
Instead of a broader variety of building your blueprints, you end up copying a bunch of them.

Fancied making a shmup, wanted to use Unreal. There are a couple of templates in the marketplace along with tons of starter content yet came to the course from the platform 2D videos up on YouTube. Here's a course that did the job, covered a ton of stuff (like inheritance) and is still relevant in the latest Unreal. Recommended!

I liked that this course covers most of the basics. You get to know many different areas like graphics, particles, sounds, gameplay logic, creating menus and ui. The course shows also a lot of Unreal Blueprints. Still I think some Blueprint concepts could be explained in a better way. For example the principles of how to organize and structure Blueprints and where to find the things I'm looking for. To me it's sometimes confusing how to deal with object types and how to decide where to put my data. I would like to know more about how to dig around in existing Blueprints/code to find out what they do. There are some basic tips about debugging in this course but I feel like it's shown on a rather basic level. I would like to know how to set up complex menus, rewrite physics and player movement (for example add accelleration and friction). All in all I enjoyed the course and got more comfortable UE4. I can recommend this.

The course is a good learn-by-doing course but if you're looking for something that teaches everything about Unreal Engine as individual concepts this isn't the course for you(not saying that this is a bad course though)

Trs intressant, notamment parce que l'on trouve peu de formations sur UE4 pour crer ce genre de jeux d'arcade. Le fait de construire le jeu sans utiliser les templates habituels permet de mieux comprendre la programmation des mouvements et dplacements. Mme si les indications sont claires, il faut tout de mme - mon avis- connaitre au moins les bases de UE4 et la logique des blueprints pour profiter pleinement du cours. Merci au formateur d'avoir inclus des correctif pour dernires versions d'UE4. Seul bmol : les sous-titres gnrs automatiquement sont malheureusement quasi incomprhensibles.
