Our take

Based on the ratings of 765 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in September 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a quick update class for people who already run vSphere 6.7 and need to know what changed in 7. Rick Crisci, a VMware Certified Instructor, keeps it to 3.8 hours across 39 lectures in five sections: an intro, vCenter 7, management, performance, and Kubernetes. Most lectures run 5 to 15 minutes. The page lists foundation-level vSphere 6.7 knowledge as a requirement, so it is not a first look at VMware.

Reviewers like the plain explanations and the mix of slides and demos. Two say they were about to upgrade from 6.x and that the warnings and fixes shown on screen saved them a lot of reading. The complaints are small. One person found broken links in the last section and handouts missing from the resources. Another wanted at least a demo of Kubernetes on vSphere. A third would rather see the instructor than hear a voice over slides.

Of 765 ratings, 428 are five stars, and only five are two stars. The course was last updated in September 2024, so check the topics against the release you actually run. It reads as a good briefing before an upgrade project, and a thin one if Kubernetes is your main interest. Across 3,209 students it holds a 4.6 rating, which fits what the reviews describe.

Best forvSphere 6.7 admins planning an upgrade who want the changes and the gotchas in one afternoon.
Skip it ifYou are new to VMware, or you want hands-on Kubernetes labs rather than a short overview.

Pros

  • Upgrade demos for vCenter 6.7 to 7 and ESXi, with problems and workarounds shown
  • Short lectures, mostly 5 to 15 minutes, easy to take in small sittings
  • Reviewers say the explanations are simple and the structure is clean
  • Covers backups through the VAMI, Lifecycle Manager and Update Planner, not just headline features

Cons

  • Kubernetes section is about 35 minutes, with no demo, which one reviewer wanted
  • Voiceover on slides and demos; one reviewer wanted the instructor on screen
  • Some links in the last section are broken and a few referenced documents are missing
Excellent mix of theory and practical demos. Very well structured!

Rated intermediate. It expects vSphere 6.7 foundations or a year or two of admin work, and skips the basics.

After an initial video issue, which I solved by looking here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252994358 I was able to run the course great ! very happy, thank you !

By Jay Updegrove on 10/7/2022

We're getting ready to upgrade our vSphere from 6.7 to 7.X and this course had all the documentation and hints on where things might go wrong that I would have otherwise spent a VERY long time looking up myself. A couple of the links in Section 5 are broken because they're outdated and some of the documents mentioned in the lessons are not in the resources folders so I'm sure this just needs a quick cleanup and refresh but otherwise, still very helpful for anyone looking to upgrade their vSphere level and save themselves the time of researching it all on their own!

By Mukund Kumar on 6/6/2021

This course is really helped me to understand of new features of VMware 7.0. Thanks, Rick for explaining all the topics in detail.

This course has a lot of straight forward information on vSphere 7. I should have no problem using this info.

By Stephane Darrell EMILIEN on 12/24/2020

Great course as always. Though was expecting more content regarding use of Kubernetes on vSphere 7 (maybe at least a demo)

By Maurice Dennard on 12/22/2020

Prefer a course where I can see the instructor speaking as well. When doing demos, minimize the instructor to a video box in the lower or upper third. That would seem more personal and inviting versus hearing a voice over powerpoint slides.

By Lori D Johnston on 11/16/2020

I was only looking for a quick class to get my feet wet for VMWare 7.0 as I will be upgrading from v6.0. I very much appreciated all the issues he encountered along with fixes or steps to get around them. This class has a lot of resources and would be great if they could all be zipped up at the end for just 1 download.

By Anonymized User on 10/20/2020

All topics are covered but request you to please elaborate more about Vsphere 7 features and benefits

By Devon Daley on 6/17/2020

This is perfect timing for me, the information in this lab helps me to leapfrog ahead very quickly. I will be upgrading my home lab to vSphere 7, and I'm also looking forward to learning more about Kubernetes in vSPhere 7
