Course Description
What do TREES, SMOKE, MUSCLES and WAVES have to teach us about writing melodies?
A killer melody line can make a song (and a lame one can also break your song). You know a great melody when you hear it, by maybe you're wondering WHY it works?
That's what we'll explore in this class, as we dive into songwriting/composition techniques to strengthen your music.
We'll approach this topic by looking at nature. Nature is all around us, and it's literally us. Our bodies are part of nature. Therefore, we are instinctually attracted to works that have really strong similarities to nature. Not literal similarities (i.e. a song about the ocean), but similarity in structure and anatomy.
Here's some of the things we'll cover in this class, that will help you when you are writing a song:
How patterns, and variations on patterns, are found in nature - and how that relates to music composition and songwriting.
What can we learn from smoke - and how that teaches about anticipation and surprise. And how this can inform how much repetition you'll use when composing and writing a melody.
How tension and relaxation can create movement in your music - just like how it works in our bodies (with muscles). There are a number of composition techniques in this, for how to work with tension (dissonance).
Adding complexity through overlapping melodic lines - similar to how waves overlap each other. How composing with this in mind can add increased complexity and depth to your music.
Whether you're someone looking to get better at writing songs, or composing instrumental music, we are going to dive into the FUNDAMENTALS around music. There will be plenty of songwriting techniques in there, but my main aim is to equip you with a better understanding for how these elements work.

Jonathan Haidle
Conservatory trained in both piano performance and composition, with an minor in painting, Jonathan brings a wide range of artistic influences to his music. After getting a masters in Education, he founded Forte Music School - where 180+ students receive private lessons with focus on recording/arranging pieces they learn. He then focused on composing for film/TV, and has most recently started to write/release work as a solo artist. His solo work sounds like a blend of James Blake, Radiohead and Philip Glass (with a pinch of Kanye).

This course was a bit interesting; however, I'm thinking it wasn't what I was quite ready for currently. I will be able to use some of the strategies/techniques he offers. I believe this course helped me start looking at producing music from a different prospective.

Abs.

First, Jonathan (hope I've spelled that right) has provided a way of looking at composing that falls into my poetic view of music. Reaching for nature's inspiration resonates deeply. 2. He organized it for simple understanding. 3. His speech tempo and voice are well suited to the subject. 4. I resonate with every part of the course, including Yash's courage to have his efforts dissected. I'm inspired and will repeat this course often and seek out Jonathan's others.

Definitely some helpful tips, but I feel the course is a bit short. It does show the teachers ability to be concise! Overall I really enjoyed it.

The nature metaphors really resonated with me, and they will be easy to bring to mind when I am composing again. The student critique section was very helpful too. I'm going to look back at my recent compositions, listen with 'new ears' and see if I can build some of these techniques in where appropriate.

Music has been called the language of emotions and Jonathan teaches you by tapping into the right-brain, where our emotions lie. He teaches using images in addition to left-brain analyzation where you feel what he's teaching rather than simply lecturing about some musical concepts. It's right-brained learning (and left-brained analysis), where creativity stems from, and I believe altogether it's a very valuable course.

I've been writing songs for a while, and have always wanted to get better at composing. I do feel like I'm able to write melodies that are catchy, but what was so great about this class, is that I learned WHY this works. It's given me a lot more confidence in the songwriting techniques I already had. In addition to giving me a bunch of new ideas to expand on that. Definitely recommend this class to anyone who's looking to improve - beginner or advanced. As it's hitting at fundamentals that are relevant for whatever level you'd be at. Great class!

I've really been wanting to get better at writing music, and learn music composition techniques. What was so great about this class, is I now feel like I *understand* how to write a good melody. haha...now I guess the challenge is still actually do it. But I feel like I'm much more on my way to know how to write songs, at a fundamental level. Great class. Definitely recommend.

Tons of great stuff here for writing music, or songs. If you want to learn how to compose music, would definitely recommend this class. It was a bit frustrating at first, to be honest, cause I felt sort of overwhelmed. There's so much great information in here. So I've been working through it again, in smaller bits trying to absorb/apply that portion. And then it feels like the material keeps getting better and better.

Just in terms of production, it's one of the best I've seen on here. How he uses visual examples, and the delivery is crisp and moves at just the right pace. I never felt, at any time, that the material was dragging, or going too slow. Lots of songwriting techniques here that I will be able to apply right away.
