Yoga Medicine’s Guide to Therapeutic Yoga (Udemy.com)

Empower your yoga practice with key insights from anatomy, physiology, & mental health for improved well-being

Created by: Tiffany Cruikshank

Last updated November 2017

Our take

Based on the ratings of 588 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in November 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a six hour yoga course built from 28 lessons in five sections. Each lesson opens with a lecture from Tiffany Cruikshank, founder of Yoga Medicine, who points to medical illustrations in the handouts. A guided sequence led by other Yoga Medicine teachers follows. The focus is on why poses work: anatomy, the nervous system and mindfulness. It suits people who already practice and want that reasoning, though the requirements say anyone can start, and one reviewer says even a layman can follow it.

Reviewers like the teaching most. They describe Tiffany as clear on complicated subjects, and a couple of yoga teachers call it useful for their own work. The production quality gets praise too, as do the sequences, and one student reports a real release in the shoulders and neck after the shoulder practice. One reviewer wanted a part 2, and another wished the muscles were named more often. The sharpest criticism is a three star review saying the title promises yoga therapy, but the course is mostly injury prevention for the shoulders, spine and hips, with only an introductory nervous system section.

The course was last updated in November 2017, and none of the reviews we have flag outdated material. Ratings are strong: 4.7 stars across 588 reviews, with 403 of them five star. It is a paid course of about six hours. Treat it as a solid foundation and a taster, not a clinical program. Anyone hoping for treatment plans for particular conditions should look elsewhere.

Best forPracticing yogis and teachers who want the anatomy and nervous system reasoning behind the poses.
Skip it ifYou want true yoga therapy for specific ailments, or a deep look at knees and wrists.

Pros

  • Lectures use medical illustrations, then a guided sequence puts each idea on the mat
  • Reviewers say Tiffany explains complicated anatomy simply, even for a layman
  • High quality production, with teachers who explain each pose and transition well
  • One reviewer reports release in the shoulders and neck after the shoulder practice

Cons

  • The title says therapeutic, but it is mostly injury prevention for shoulders, spine and hips
  • Nervous system section is introductory, and one reviewer notes knees and wrists are skipped
  • Last updated in 2017, with no quizzes or exercises to check what you have learned
I loved the emphasis on the scientific aspects of yoga and breakdown of the various body parts. It's also a very high quality production which makes it easy to stay engaged.

Listed for all levels. Best for regular practitioners and teachers, though beginners can follow along if anatomy interests them.

Course Description

Make the most of your precious time on the mat! In our time-starved lifestyle, the moments we spend in yoga practice must have the most beneficial effect possible. This essential course is designed for any level of yoga practitioner—from aspiring to experienced yogis—to learn to approach any class or practice with greater integrity, so you can gain the maximal therapeutic effect possible, no matter when, where, or how you practice.

The founder of Yoga Medicine, internationally acclaimed teacher Tiffany Cruikshank, L.Ac., MAOM, E-RYT, has designed this course to make the groundbreaking techniques of Yoga Medicine accessible to everyone. Yoga Medicine teachers are rigorously educated in a fusion of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics with the traditional practice of yoga. Yoga Medicine extensively trains teachers to work with students and healthcare providers to find a yoga practice that is an appropriate therapeutic adjunct to medical care.

After teaching for over two decades, training thousands of yoga teachers, presenting at conferences around the world, and working with tens of thousands of patients, Tiffany has distilled the Yoga Medicine training down to the most important factors that help everyone get the most out of their yoga practice. Sharing many of these findings for the first time, Tiffany’s course is an essential supplement for anyone who practices yoga and wants to enhance the therapeutic effects of their practice.

In Yoga Medicine’s teacher trainings, we pride ourselves on teaching our students the what, why, and how of the poses, so teachers can empower their students to take their practice and health into their own hands. In this course, you’ll access this teacher training directly, learning Yoga Medicine’s key insights on anatomy, physiology, and mental health that you will be able to immediately put into use. You will learn how to develop your practice with a three-dimensional approach to address the physical body, the internal organs, and the mind simultaneously, in harmony with your body’s physiological reflexes and instincts.

This course features five sections with 28 unique lessons. In each lesson, you will learn critical information, alignment tips, and pose modifications that help you elevate your practice in whatever time you have. By the end of this course, you will be able to confidently approach any style of yoga with greater integrity, knowing you have the skills and knowledge to get the most out of every moment on the mat.

Each lesson will begin with a structured lecture by Tiffany, during which she will review the key points of learning and how the training will build upon itself with each section. During her lectures, Tiffany will refer to medical illustrations and notes that are provided in your handouts, to help you make connections and deepen your understanding. After each lecture, you’ll begin a thematically-linked yoga sequence, guided by Yoga Medicine’s most accomplished teachers, to help you make the embodied connection between the ideas and the practice so you can feel the core concepts of that lesson at work in your body.

Rather than simply provide a set of classes for you to repeat (and become dependent upon!), this course teaches you the key biomechanical concepts needed to approach any type of practice with the maximum physiological, mental, and emotional benefit. You’ll learn about the interaction of the nervous system with the poses, and how mindfulness meditation and specific methods of breathing can help you further tap into your body’s innate rest-and-recovery response. By the end of the course, you will have learned to move your body in more specifically healing ways, in all settings, so you can experience greater integrity and therapeutic effect from any yoga practice. These individual lessons and practices will be here for your review at any time, but the intention is for this education and these core concepts to travel with you, enabling you to tap into them at will.

Pain and stress are reaching epidemic levels, affecting so many aspects of our health and well-being. The ability of yoga to combat the ravages of daily life has become essential in today’s world. But with more and more scientific research validating yoga’s therapeutic and medical applications, the more intensive healing power of yoga has become undeniable, making an individual yoga practice an indispensable tool in any complete holistic health and wellness approach. These lectures and practices help you tap directly into that therapeutic effect, pairing cutting-edge scientific findings with hands-on instruction that helps you get the most targeted positive impact possible from your yoga practice.

The near perfect yoga course. I loved the emphasis on the scientific aspects of yoga and breakdown of the various body parts. It's also a very high quality production which makes it easy to stay engaged. All of the instructors doing the Asanas seem knowledgeable, experienced and are really good and explaining each pose and transition. This course definitely left me wanting a part 2.

By Madison Ashley on 7/8/2020

This was a wonderful overview of Yoga Anatomy and Philosophy, with just the right amount of detail. I really admire and appreciate Tiffany's ability to convey complicated subjects in a simple and relatable way - I think this really attests to her level of expertise and understanding of Yoga subjects. Highly recommend!

Overall, this course is excellent. Very good audio and image quality, it's very professional. I would say it's more geared towards students and new yoga teachers. I liked having a reminder of basic anatomy and structure of joints & spine, which is well explained and very accessible. I think Tiffany's approach to yoga is in tune with modern and scientific knowledge, which is the key to bring more understanding and safety in our practice. I removed a star because I found that some asanas practice, particularly the one for the hips, uses outdated cues that are compromising the health of the SI joint (=square your hips to the front in warrior I). So, not very therapeutic.

This course provided lots of valuable information about some of the key aspects of Yoga such as alignment and mindfulness as well as some of the more challenging areas of an asana practice--the shoulders, spine, and hips. I've already begun to incorporate some of the insights into my daily practice and my teaching. Thanks so much!!

I enjoyed this class from beginning to end. It was informative and incredibly useful to lecture and then put that information into practice. I plan on doing the course again to solidify what I have learned. Tiffany is brilliant with explanations and her knowledge shines through. She also has the gift to make one feel comfortable and completely capable of bringing more awareness to their existing practice. If I didn't already have a practice I believe this would have been a great starting point as well. I am very grateful for teachers like Tiffany. Thank you!

By Kristen Keaney on 4/14/2018

Loved this course! Very easy to comprehend and apply to your practice. My only desire was to have more discussion on the nervous system and how it relates to your practice. Still thoroughly satisfied! and if you loved the anatomy portion of this training I strongly suggest you take Yoga Medicines Yoga Anatomy course! Shanti Shanti Shantih

I really enjoyed this course. I found it to be incredibly clear, concise and engaging. The Yoga practices were great at taking what was lectured about and applying the principles so I could experience it in my body. Tiffany Cruikshank is obvioulsy a master in her field and I very much respect her and the knowledge and perspective she shares on Yoga. Thanks so much!

Incredible course , great way to continue my Yoga Education and focus on a speciality practice for my students. Enjoyed the set up of the course understanding the foundation , application , and then seeing how to utilize in my practice. Looking forward to taking more courses like this from Yoga Medicine. Also enjoyed that I could rewind and go at my own pace slow down or speed up as needed.

The course helped me to deepen my understanding the yoga practice and connect the dots beween anatomy and yoga influence. I loved that the course is well structured and has a logical flow. The instructor has amazing presentation skills and calming assuring voice. The combination of theory (which doesnt go too deep but just enough) and practical yoga excercises make the experience complite. I m very happy with the course!

By Carole Coull on 1/2/2018

I enjoyed the anatomy elements of the course. The descriptions and handout were easy to understand and follow. All of the sections were useful in their own way. Each asana practice built practically on what Tiffany had discussed during the short lectures. I will use the material from the course and incorporate it into my own practice and teaching. Thank you.
