Course Description

Advanced Topics picks up where the Getting Started course ended. You should now have some experience with JavaScript and understand the JavaScript language much better. Therefore, you are ready to learn more of the nuances and important patterns that advanced JavaScript developers know and use.
In Learn Modern JavaScript: Advanced Topics, we explore the more advanced techniques in JavaScript. You learn advanced concepts for objects and functions, the value of 'this', the power of functions using closure and IIFEs. You learn about the namespace and module patterns. You learn JSON and how to load a JSON file. You will follow along as we apply OOP concepts to a project. You get very familiar with the prototype, and these are just the main topics covered in this advanced course. A new bonus section helps you get familiar with functional programming concepts in JavaScript.
This course contains 15 sections and one bonus section, over 90 different lectures, over 17 hours of video, 4 quizzes, 9 assignments, 1 large project and several Think Like a Programmer sections with invaluable information for those intent on making JavaScript a career choice or a major part of their lives.
If you want to improve your JavaScript skills, this course is for you!Who this course is for:
  • Anyone who wants to improve their JavaScript skills.

I have had 20+ years experience in training and product development and 15+ years working with JavaScript. I started learning JavaScript when it was a new language used for minor affects on a web site. The growth and ubiquitous nature of JavaScript both excites and inspires me.
I currently work as the President and Lead Trainer at All Things JavaScript, a resource for anyone and everyone that hopes to increase their JavaScript skills and move from novice to expert.
I'm doing what I love most: Teaching about technical subjects. It is so important to understand the why, not just the what and how, when it comes to technical subjects. My goal is to help thousands of JavaScript developers to get started and become experts in the field making a great living coding.
I was the co-owner and President of Rapid Intake, an eLearning firm. The company was an ideal place for me to apply my training and development skills. While there I managed all development and professional service related activities. I was heavily involved in the initial development of Rapid Intake's main product, an eLearning authoring tool, which eventually lead to Rapid Intake's acquisition in 2011 by Callidus Software.
In addition to JavaScript technologies, I have dabbled in other web technologies such as ActionScript, ASP, PHP, HTML, and CSS.

great so far. Love the course

I only have seen the first part at the moment. Although I already knew the "this" implicit binding concept from some book, the well explained examples have helped me to settle it. I hope to understand the next sections too...

Good course. Instructor is active in Q&A.

Great comprehensive overview of "advanced" Javascript topics from Steve! His simple, straightforward explanations boil seemingly arcane features of JS into fairly intuitive concepts that you can confidently implement and test on your own. If anything, I found the videos to be a bit on the slow side for me personally, but can appreciate the synergy of this approach with his carefully staged, linear code demonstrations, which I'm sure benefits people who may learn differently (or who rely on the video captions) . The only real major area of improvement I would push for is a bit more emphasis on more use-cases (maybe one mini-project at the end of each section incorporating the new JS feature), but overall think this course fulfills its main promise of improving your JS foundations (especially in conjunction with other, more real-life application-oriented courses)!

What I like:
--Abundance of examples that take things I understand well, and learn to understand it to a level I may never need, but would desire to know.
--The quizzing is a bit more difficult than in other classes (in other words it's not a waste of time, nor is it only there to make you feel good about yourself for acing it) and seems to be geared towards making sure that you are actually learning.
--This class is generally really well thought out and it is clearly visible that a lot of prep went into each lesson.
What I don't like:
--Most of what I could say would be nitpicking, but one thing that I feel is a strike against the course is something I witnessed when previewing the topic of ES6 Classes. Mr. Hancock was preaching his own (shared) opinion about ES6 Classes in a somewhat strong way that goes beyond a general warning. I would have preferred if he would teach us how to use ES6 Classes and then give us a short aside saying that 'one may meet resistance in developer communities and in the workplace because some developers (here is where it would be fit for Mr. Hancock to add credibility to this opinion with a simple 'myself included') think that this is a fallacy'. Despite that negative, I still decided to give the course a go and I am still glad that I did and I am very happy with the purchase. In the end, however, I will still try to adapt my coding style to the preference of my colleagues if possible for the sake of helping others to work with my code when they must, unless their ideas are just plain stupid :). Thanks for the course Mr. Hancock.

Deliverying good content . Understandable! But not answering the questions which i have passed

This course provides extremely thorough and complete coverage of all of the different advanced aspects of the JavaScript language with lots of examples to show how they are actually typed-in and applied in real running code.

The Great Course, especially the funcional programming part!

Good course to understand advanced Javascript concepts

I have fairly Good experience of Java script. But this course taught me quite a few new things or at least quite a few, why things work the way they work. Excellent course. Highly recommended.

Great teacher. My only complaint is how he displays his examples is too time consuming...Copies Link, Leaves Sublime, Refresh's Chrome, finally opens the console.

It's really, really hard to find courses like this, especially in this community that has hundreds of them. It says 'Advanced Topics' like so many others, but this course really means it. Very nice work, covers thoroughly all major key concepts. Good job, i'm very satisfied :)
