Course Description

Are you wanting to learn how to apply functional programming in JavaScript? Have the concepts been a bit difficult to grasp? Are you not quite sure how functional programming differs from other approaches used in JavaScript? If so, this course is for you!

The functional programming paradigm was difficult, at first, for me to grasp and implement. Therefore, I wanted to create a course that would help others make the leap and begin applying functional programming techniques into their own code. In this course you will learn techniques that you can apply today. But remember, you don't need to implement everything immediately. Implement those things that make sense and grow into it slowly.

In this course I have taken the approach of dissecting a technical definition of functional programming and using that definition as the structure of the course. We will break it down into pieces. Focus on those pieces and the techniques you can use right away. Each new concept will build on the previous concepts. And in the end you will see all the concepts come together.

If you learn by doing, this course gives you plenty of chances to work on exercises and then sit back and watch as I go through the exercise. By doing and then watching my approach, you will learn how to apply functional programming concepts to JavaScript.

Jump in today and begin learning a different way of using JavaScript!

I have had 25+ years experience in training and product development and 20+ years working with JavaScript. I started learning JavaScript when it was a new language used for minor affects on a web site. The growth and ubiquitous nature of JavaScript both excites and inspires me.

I currently work as the President and Lead Trainer at All Things JavaScript, a resource for anyone and everyone that hopes to increase their JavaScript skills and move from novice to expert.

I'm doing what I love most: Teaching about technical subjects. It is so important to understand the why, not just the what and how, when it comes to technical subjects. My goal is to help thousands of JavaScript developers to get started and become experts in the field making a great living coding.

I was the co-owner and President of Rapid Intake, an eLearning firm. The company was an ideal place for me to apply my training and development skills. While there I managed all development and professional service related activities. I was heavily involved in the initial development of Rapid Intake's main product, an eLearning authoring tool, which eventually lead to Rapid Intake's acquisition in 2011 by Callidus Software.

In addition to JavaScript technologies, I have dabbled in other web technologies such as ActionScript, ASP, PHP, HTML, and CSS.

The code samples really need to be tidied up. Should be using fat arrow functions instead of function expressions for the callbacks. Should remove all 'var' declarations and also either use 'let' everywhere or use 'const' everywhere instead of seeming to use them at random. This is demonstrating very poor coding practices to beginners

This was a great course. The curriculum revolves around a definition of functional programming (by Eric Elliott). The instructor breaks down that definition into its component pieces, explaining each piece and showing how it fits within the wider context of the definition. I felt that this approach was very focused and helped me gradually build up my understanding of the topic. The instructor is great at explaining and demonstrating concepts slowly. The exercises build on previous exercises in this course, which means you can see how the code gradually turns more 'functional' as you progress. You will have an easier time with this course if you understand core JS concepts, like JS objects, closure, JS execution contexts... Highly recommended!

A very good introduction into functional programming. The course is well structured and builds up step by step. It helps me to understand the concepts ans shows how to realize the example by pure JavaScript and additional libraries Loadash and Ramda. The examples are very well explained.

So far so good. Definitely starting by defining it properly - which is something that lacks when I've tried to approach this subject. Half way - still good, but has lost some of the conceptual guiding force. Seeing a lot of techniques ( which are interesting ) but I've lost track of why I'd want to do this, is it the best way to do something, and why it still relates to functional programming.

This course is really amazing for beginners! Not as good for experienced programmers though because explaining basic JavaScript concepts (that should be well-known for experienced programmers already) takes a great amount of time. Some of the examples might seem a bit outdated in 2020. But the basic functional programming concepts are explained very well!

Over all very good refresher on functional programming and some of its aspects using JavaScript. However, at times, examples were a little too involved, some were contrived and relied on pre written external code and lacked coherent explanation. The structure could be improved using more modern techniques and tooling, perhaps moving away from reliance on browser console and using node more and the strengths of the v8 engine. Syntax could also do with improving, lots of strange uses of things. However, good instructor and examples in places, would recommend.

I have been working with JavaScript for a while, but always found myself struggling with concepts of functional programming. Most of the other courses just blazed through the functional programming part. But the instructions laid down by Steve finally allowed me to unlock doors and concepts that eluded me all along. I am so glad i have had an opportunity to subscribe to Steve's Functional Programming and Asynchronous Programming courses. They now top my list of go-to courses for understanding JS concepts. Steve, I am looking forward to being a part of your other courses. Thank you.

I came into this course with an understanding of functional programming in JavaScript and saw that it was listed as Intermediate level. It took a while to get to topics that were new to me, such as currying and function composition, but once there I started to get value from this course. I think this is most valuable to those who are completely new to functional programming and the concepts of immutability. For someone who is already familiar with cloning, immutability, and filter/map/reduce, this course is a bit too elementary.

By Steve Minor on 5/17/2019

Takes difficult to understand concepts and delivers them in an extremely easy to digest format. Many other online resources get theory heavy too quickly. This material moves at a manageable pace. I really learned a lot through this resource and strongly recommend it.

Good overview of Functional programming concepts. The instructor provided clear instructions on the cover concepts. All examples worked as expected. I would recommend this course if you want to get a good overview of function programming concepts.
