Our take

Based on the ratings of 635 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in July 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

Emile Ackbarali's course teaches EtherNet/IP, the industrial protocol that lets PLCs, drives and remote I/O modules swap data over standard Ethernet. It runs about 2.6 hours across 31 lectures. It starts with objects, instances and attributes, then moves to explicit and implicit messaging. The practical half uses the free Do-More simulator, a real ADAM 6156EI remote I/O module shown on screen, and a simple Windows application. It is pitched at people who already work around SCADA or process control.

Reviewers like the teaching. They describe Ackbarali as clear, well spoken and easy to listen to, and a controls engineer with 10+ years in the field says it is clear, to the point and relevant. One reviewer singles out the Do-More simulator practice, and another says the practical approach helped the concepts land. The complaints are small. One student found the coding section hard to follow, and one 1-star reviewer called the whole thing really basic. Of 635 ratings, 559 are four or five stars.

The course was updated in July 2026, so the material isn't stale. Keep in mind that the ADAM module is a demo you watch, not something you can repeat at home. Your own hands-on work is the simulator and the code. As a short, focused starting point for someone who needs to understand the protocol before touching real devices, it does the job well. As a full reference, it won't.

Best forAutomation technicians and engineers who want a quick, practical grounding in EtherNet/IP messaging.
Skip it ifYou want hours of hands-on PLC work or a deep reference. This is a 2.6 hour introduction.

Pros

  • Instructor is described as clear and easy to listen to, with straightforward visuals
  • Do-More simulator exercises let students practice messaging with no hardware
  • A real ADAM remote I/O module is shown live, which ties theory to a physical device
  • Includes a .NET coding section for building EtherNet/IP explicit and implicit messaging apps

Cons

  • Short at about 2.6 hours, and one reviewer called it really basic
  • The coding section was hard to follow for at least one student
  • No quizzes or exercises, and the real hardware is demo only
Emile is a great instructor. Explanations were very clear and practical implementation of learning made easy to understand the things in much better way.

Course Description

If you work in industrial automation, you already know that the ability to get devices talking to each other quickly, reliably, and at high speed is everything. And one of the most widely adopted protocols making that happen on the plant floor today is EtherNet/IP — Ethernet Industrial Protocol.

EtherNet/IP is not a niche technology. It is supported by a vast ecosystem of industrial devices and equipment vendors, and its presence on the plant floor is only growing. Engineers and technicians who can configure and work with it are consistently valuable — and this course is going to make you one of them.

By the end of this course, you won't just have knowledge of EtherNet/IP — you will have a practical, hands-on skill. You will be able to configure EtherNet/IP devices to exchange data on a network, understand what is happening at the protocol level, and apply that understanding confidently in real-world situations.

Here is how we get there. We start with data representation — one of the most important foundations in any industrial protocol. You'll get a solid understanding of objects, instances, and attributes — the building blocks of how EtherNet/IP organises and exposes data. From there we move into network messaging, covering network topology and the two core messaging types in EtherNet/IP — Explicit Messaging and Implicit Messaging. Understanding the difference between these, and knowing when to use each one, is what separates a practitioner from someone who has simply read about the protocol.

And then we get into the practical work — and this is where it gets really interesting.

You'll use free simulation software to build your own EtherNet/IP network right on your computer — no external hardware required. We then go a step further — I bring in a real piece of hardware, an ADAM I/O remote module, and you'll watch me establish live EtherNet/IP communication with it. Even though you won't have the hardware yourself, seeing it done live with a real physical device is enormously valuable — it connects everything you've learned to the real world in a way that simulation alone simply cannot. And then we go one step further still — you'll build a Windows EtherNet/IP application in .NET using a free library, giving you a genuinely rare and powerful capability that very few courses at this level even attempt.

By the time you're done, the theory won't just be something you read — it will be something you've applied, hands-on, across simulation, real hardware demonstration, and software development.

Emile Ackbarali

I have been working in the fields of Software Development, Software Systems Integration and Process Automation since 1996. In 2003, I stepped out on my own and started working for myself providing software development and systems integration services to small and medium businesses.

Teaching has always been a passion for me. I have taught at the tertiary level for many years on the subjects of programming, control systems as well as systems integration. In the last few years I found myself incorporating more and more videos into the curriculum with amazing results.

When I heard of uDemy I just could not help but sign up. With teaching in a classroom, you can reach only so many students, but with uDemy you can reach the world! I plan to publish and promote as many courses as I possibly can on the uDemy platform.

This is probably one of the best instructionals I have seen covering the topic of EtherNet IP. I am a Controls Engineer with 10+ years of experience in the field and would strongly recommend this instructional to anyone who wants to get familiar with the EtherNet IP protocol. The instructional is clear, to the point, and the course content is very relevant. A+

By Jeremy Choate on 2/18/2023

I set out, this morning, just to go a little bit deeper in my knowledge of EtherNet/IP. I had no idea that we would be getting into writing a .NET client to communicate with adapters, nor did I know we'd be getting a lesson on how to use the EtherNET/IP Explorer program (which I had no idea existed). This course was not only incredibly informative and easy to follow, but I got a LOT more out of it than I was expecting. Thanks so much Emile! I look forward to checking out your other courses!

Great course! Emile Ackbarali is a great instructor. I salute! The course content is well explained and very clear. I very much enjoyed this course this course and would definitely recommend it to future students.

By Charity Miranda Shown on 11/22/2020

The instructor used an easy to understand analogy for the not so easy to understand concepts which facilitated my understanding. They also kept the videos short, without needless talking and emphasized when a point was fundamental to understanding the topic - direct and easy to follow!

By Armin Ray Semler on 10/4/2020

While the course was not 100% what I was looking for I still learned valuable skills and gained information that I hadn't known before. I have done an immense amount of PLC programming and used proprietary communications but I've never used ethernetIP. I feel confident enough to attempt a small project and build on to it until I've mastered it. The instructor's style is clear and concise; very easy to understand and comprehend. Thank you Emile, I'll be sure to take more of your training!

Amazing course! I know nothing about Ethernet/IP, now I have a pretty good grasp and I'm excited to learn more! Recently I started becoming interested to learn communication protocols, but I've always found it hard to find a course related to Automation, but now I have found a great instructor and resource. This value of this course is quite high due to the clear and methodological way the instructor teaches, which makes it super clear and super practical (you can follow along easily). I will definitely recommend this to anyone interested in Industrial Control!

Too fast going. Confusing concepts It was told Ethernet/IP = TCP/IP + CIP but Ethernet IP messages is sent by TCP/UDP, so the very building block (TCP/IP) have to pre exist to actually build it self.

By christophe LAURENT on 5/25/2020

This is an excellent course. It covers about everything I needed even if I would enjoy more details about Ethernet/IP explorer features, such as Implicit messaging functions menu, and also a more details about implicit messaging API in section 29.

By Carmelo Curmi on 11/5/2019

the presentations were good and detailed as well. although i have already background of EtherNet/IP, I still managed to learn new things. I will also refer to the SW development chapters as will help me in developing my own EIP scanner. Maybe one point to remark is that, is that nothing was discussed about EDS files. Maybe adding a section on this topic might be useful.
