Course Description
This video course is all about offering you a fun introduction to the world of game programming, Android, and the Java language using two fun, fully-playable games. These games are a retro Breakout/Arkanoid type game and the all-time classic, Space Invaders.
- We will start with the very basics of Java programming, including setting up the development environment, variables, loops, conditions, methods and Object Oriented Programming.
- Next up we will tackle the Breakout game as well as introducing more advanced Java concepts like arrays, threads and interfaces. Finally (for now ;-)) we will take on the more complicated Space Invaders game
- If you know Java but have never used Android Studio then the course introduces you the basics of Android development as well. If you already know Java and Android but just want to learn to make games then start at section 2 of the course

I am a coding and gaming enthusiast based in the UK. I have a passion for writing apps, games, books, and blog articles about programming, especially for beginners. I am the founder of Game Code School, which is dedicated to helping complete beginners get started coding using the language and platform that is best for them. I believe that anyone can learn to code and that everybody has a game or an app inside of them, and that they just need to do the work to bring it out.

Changes in Android Studio since this course was made make this a frustrating experience.

the course is built on copy and paste codes without explaining their meanings, focusing on the syntax and not the meaning. giving classes with understanding instances, is not effective

Presenters style is very clear and well paced. Unfortunately some of the content is aged, as newer versions of the software have been introduced you are not necessarily able to follow installation instructions exactly as shown. I was able to overcome these hurdles, but it would be nice to see the content adapted for the current version of Android Studio.

Great course. The instructor did a fantastic job at explaining everything, so I was rarely ever lost. I thoroughly enjoyed his section about Object Oriented Programming, which I have had difficulty wrapping my head around when it was initially explained to me elsewhere.

Enjoyed the the course. Found the two games too similar. Yes, the second was slightly more complex, but there was very little new stuff introduced. Scrolling backgrounds might be a good addition. All in all - it was worth the price.

I am an experienced programmer, but not so on android and gaming, so I was looking for some quick fun introduction, and I found it with this course. I had fun and it gave me inspiration to try to write my own game(s).

Amazing! This one of the most well instructed tutorials I've ever seen. Everything is explained and demonstrated quite accurately & professionally. I am enjoying his course immensely. Well done!! Will be purchasing a couple of his Java/Android books to follow along with his courses. Thank you for making them! Mr. Horton is my new hero :)

Very thorough and presented in a way that can be understood whether you are a beginner or intermediate java student. The volume of the instructors voice really needs to be turned up as a lot of the time it's hard to hear what he is saying. I actually had to use an external speaker amplifier to hear him correctly. With that said, great course, great price, great instructor!

Straight forward instruction. Attention to detail, even at this early stage in the course. Most other courses and tutorials assume you know more than you do. The instructor has also written books that teach android application and game programming. The books and the instructor's game programming tutorial site are why I chose this particular course over the others available.
