Our take
Based on the ratings of 61 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in March 2018. No course pays to be reviewed.
Angela Yu's ARKit course is a short one, about 2.8 hours across 21 lectures and three sections. It was published in March 2018 for iOS 11 and Xcode 9, and it has not been updated since. The first section explains what augmented reality is, then uses ARKit and SceneKit to place 3D objects and text in a room, including a dice roller and the moon. A bonus section builds a Pokemon style scene with Vuforia and Unity, and the last section makes an AR tape measure. About 430 students have enrolled.
Reviewers keep coming back to the teaching. They say Angela explains why the code is written, not just what to type, and that hard ideas come across clearly. The rating is 4.5 from 61 reviews, with 36 five-star, 18 four-star and 7 three-star ratings, and nothing lower. The complaints are about age. Reviewers mention deprecated classes, and say RealityKit, SwiftUI and newer ARKit versions have moved on. One notes the Q and A went unanswered, and a 2024 reviewer found it too basic.
At under three hours, this is a friendly intro, not a deep one. There are no quizzes or coding exercises, so the learning comes from following along. Anyone who needs today's AR stack should look at newer material. For someone who knows basic Swift and wants to see how SceneKit based AR fits together, it is still an easy way in, though one reviewer already hit a renamed class.
Pros
- Reviewers say Angela explains why the code is written, not just what to type
- Hands-on projects: a dice roller, a moon scene and an AR tape measure
- Short at 2.8 hours, so a first ARKit app comes together quickly
- Bonus section shows a Pokemon style AR scene with Vuforia and Unity
Cons
- Last updated in 2018 for iOS 11 and Xcode 9, with some deprecated classes
- Reviewers say it skips RealityKit, SwiftUI and newer ARKit versions
- No quizzes or exercises, and one 2024 reviewer found it too basic
Much better explanations so far than I have experienced in other courses. I really like Angela's way of teaching.
Listed as intermediate. Basic iOS app experience is needed, and one reviewer says Swift newcomers will find it hard going.

The reason I gave 4.5 and not 5 stars for this cours is because I don’t feel like it’s odopted to the ARKit 6. however Angela Yu is the best instructor you will possibly learn from ! She speaks clearly and simplifies even the hardest concepts so every one can understand ! As someone who graduated 2 years of college courses and have tried many courses online and at Udemy I think the most important thing is your instructor! Thank you Angela Yu for this journey!

3. Так и не понял, какие 4 колонки вот в этой матрице: hitResult.worldTransform.columns.3.z. Масштаб, поворот, координата - понятны. А что за четвёртая колонка?

A little bit fast for me

Yeah its good, but a bit outdated. My options include RealityKit now and SwiftUI

Two things I have noticed so far 1. The course seems a little out of date. For example ARWorldTrackingSessionConfiguration has been deprecated and replaced with ARWorldTrackingConfiguration. 2. I see that Angela and staff have not responded to anything in the Q and A section which is unusual for them.

These are some complex concepts if you're new at Swift development, but really great and thorough explanations of the AR concepts!

Much better explanations so far than I have experienced in other courses. I really like Angela's way of teaching.

5 out of 5. Angela is one of the best instructors for iOS by far. Very clear explanations, clean a code. It is fantastic that she takes you around the journey to achieve the result rather than just narrate the code. It is the WHY that code is written what makes each lesson worthy to see and practice
