Our take
Based on the ratings of 12,109 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in November 2019. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a short primer on mobile app design from the App Brewery, about three hours across 62 lectures. It walks through color theory, typography, UI and UX basics for phones, the differences between iOS and Android, and then a longer section on the actual workflow: user flows, wireframes, mockups in Sketch, and animated prototypes. It is aimed at people with no design background, mostly would-be app builders and founders who want their app to look decent, rather than anyone who needs a deep professional skill set. Roughly 53,000 students have taken it.
Reviewers like Angela's teaching, calling her clear, detailed, and easy to stay engaged with. One recent reviewer says the UX principles still hold up, and others say the course gave them a solid mental checklist before designing an app. The complaints are consistent and fair. The course was last updated in November 2019, so several tools and websites it points to are outdated or gone, and low-star reviews say that shows. One reviewer notes that questions go unanswered. Another expected hands-on practice with the tools and instead got a tour of which tools exist. There are no quizzes or exercises.
With about 12,000 reviews and a 4.6 rating, most students still walk away happy, since the theory ages better than the software. Among the design thinking courses it sits beside, this is the only one aimed at mobile app screens, so it is the pick if you have an app idea and want it to look and feel right. If you want current tooling or practical depth, look elsewhere or treat this as a cheap first pass.
Pros
- Clear, engaging teaching from Angela; a recent reviewer says the UX principles still hold up years later
- Covers the whole workflow, from user flow diagrams to wireframes, mockups, and animated prototypes
- Short at about three hours, so it fits in an afternoon before you start building
- Explains the practical differences between designing for iOS and Android
Cons
- Last updated in November 2019; reviewers say the software is outdated and some linked websites no longer exist
- Student questions go unanswered, according to one recent review
- More a tour of tools and principles than hands-on practice; no quizzes or exercises
It's a 2019 course so most of the software is completely outdated. But the course content and UX principles were excellent. Engaging, paced well, and informative.
Genuinely beginner friendly: no design background or software needed, and students new to the field say they came away able to design an app.

great content., but most of the content is very outdated - some of the websites mentioned don't even exist. The content creator hasn't answered almost a single question, so do not expect any response 6 years after the course was created.

You’re going to the interesting points which I like, I hope you get away from naked people and show other designs for advertising screens/banners. I knew women are good for designing because of the emotions required for it. Nice course and if it got even better, I’ll buy it even though am subbed to the website.

Angela of AppBrewery is an amazing lecturer. A very detailed and explicitly-clear tutor. I recommend this course and all her courses on programming, Flutter, app/web designing, because she delivered 100% on them all. Thank you Angela. Keep up the good works.

FINE TUTORIAL WITH SOLID DELIVERY. HELP: I'm unable to download the "App Brewery Massive Bundle.zip" of (590M) in the Section 1, number 3 introduction file. I tried downloading with Chrome on my laptop, but twice the download failed after nearly 400MB+ of data download. I tried downloading with my phone and it's still the same thing. I don't know how else I can report this but on this review. Could you please look into this and get back to me. I need the files. Thank you.

Great course, I really learned a lot and enjoyed the course, I’ve been doing UI and design the wrong way for years, with this training I figured that out and my designs are definitely going to be far better going forward. Thank you

I thought the tutor was good. The issue I have with the course it concentrated a lot on the tools to use when designing Apps, but not enough on good design practice and the pitfalls of designing without care. I've been around prototyping and design programs enough to teach myself how to use new tools. So, though well taught for me the course didn't quite give me what I was looking for. But anyone not familiar with prototyping and suchlike, this is a good course.

As always, the London App Brewery (by Angela) doesn't mess around! She teaches you only what's necessary and memorable, and saves you a TON of time by introducing extremely useful tools & resources. The course covers everything you'll need for bringing your app idea to life: visual design rules, user flow diagrams, mockups and prototypes! Couldn't ask for anything better.

I have been through a UX Bootcamp, and this course has filled in many of the knowledge gaps that I encountered. Some fine details like Typography and how important color is and why it's the first step. The UX portion really helped me understand how can I improve my designs for the user, the prototyping and resources are amazing. This improved my App so much, I wish I did it sooner, I will be signing up for more classes from LAB, Thanks Cheers, Robert R.

I cannot explained how much I LOVED this course and how useful it was for me. I love the way Angela explains and the content is just the needed one. It's a shame I haven't found any other course from the London App Brewery on the design field. I recommend it 100% to anyone needing a bit of idea of everything in UI and UX. The Wolkflow unit was so useful as well to get an idea how to organize around a project. just great!

Almost exactly what I was looking for. Great job. Perhaps outside the sphere of this course and perhaps the answer may be obvious to a tech person, but as an entrepreneur and a person with no IT background one thing I am concerned about is the legal/ IP protection status of wire frames /mock ups and prototypes developed by designers/developers using suggested websites. Is there some sort of automatic protection in place, if so, to what extent, would one take certain precautions before hand in terms of IP protection? Can u shed some light or suggest resources? Thanks
