Course Description
Do you sometimes know exactly what you want to say, but struggle to actually say it?
Perhaps you avoid difficult conversations because you don't want conflict. You say yes when you want to say no. You tolerate behavior that bothers you. You soften your message until your needs disappear from it.
Or perhaps frustration eventually builds until you communicate far more aggressively than you intended.
Assertive communication offers another option.
Assertiveness means being able to express what you think, feel, need, or want clearly and respectfully while recognizing that the other person has needs and rights too. It is neither passivity nor aggression.
This course will help you understand the communication patterns that prevent healthy self-expression and develop practical tools for speaking up more effectively.
We begin by examining the relationship dynamics and beliefs that influence communication: trust, perception, people-pleasing, competitive behavior, transactional analysis, and the patterns that can lead people toward passive, aggressive, or unhealthy interactions.
From there, the course focuses on the practical skills of assertive communication, boundary-setting, constructive feedback, and conflict management.
You will learn how to:
Recognize passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive, and assertive communication
Identify manipulation, blame, criticism, gaslighting, and other unhealthy communication patterns
Understand why fear of conflict can make assertiveness difficult
Say no and maintain a boundary without unnecessary aggression
Use assertive communication techniques when someone continues to push
Give feedback that focuses on behavior rather than character
Use "I" statements instead of blame or accusations
Check your intention before giving feedback
Receive feedback without automatically becoming defensive
Recognize different conflict-management styles
Prevent misunderstandings before they escalate
Disagree without unnecessarily provoking defensiveness
Express anger constructively
Manage impulsive reactions during emotionally charged interactions
The objective isn't to teach you how to "win" conversations. It is to help you communicate in a way that respects both yourself and the other person.
That makes assertiveness useful across professional and personal relationships: communicating with a manager, leading a team, giving feedback to an employee, dealing with a difficult colleague, setting boundaries with family, addressing a problem with a partner, or simply becoming more comfortable saying what you actually mean.
Through exercises, role-play opportunities, and downloadable resources, you will be encouraged to practice these skills and apply them to real situations.

Incredibly insightful lecture. Would love to have a bulleted list of key concepts to go along with what the instructor is saying.

A thought-provoking course. So much information and very well explained. The take-away resources are a much needed follow through for this presentation.
By Hyatt Hollman on 11/3/2023
Good stuff but too much to absorb and not to the point. This could have been done in half the time. I do want to stress that the content is great, but could be more succinct in presentation.
By Carina Rodriguez-Nejtek on 9/12/2023
Given the words of what I am working to understand and define. Reminders at times and validation at others while learning to understand why and when.
By Justin on 4/26/2021
It took this training to realize the poor ways in which I provide others with feedback or voiced my thoughts about them. Highly recommend
By Joan Norman on 4/25/2021
Well structured and very informative training. In addition to the concepts and techniques put forward, it enables a personal self-reflection to better understand our communication patterns and those of others. Highly recommend
