Assertiveness Basics: The 50-minute Communication Guide (Udemy.com)

Communication Skills. Confidence. Body Language. Stress Management. Social Dynamics. Personal Development.

Created by: Dr. Roy Naraine

Last updated March 2023

Our take

Based on the ratings of 21,651 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in March 2023. No course pays to be reviewed.

Short and to the point, this is a video guide to assertiveness from Dr. Roy Naraine, a medical doctor who has spent twenty years running self-improvement training inside corporations. The syllabus shows 31 lectures across four sections, about 87 minutes in total: a 20-minute core lesson, a short block on handling criticism, 22 minutes of life examples, and a 35-minute section on assertive feedback added in the March 2023 update. It suits shy or introverted people and newer professionals who want a simple framework they can use tomorrow, not a psychology textbook.

Reviewers like the pace and the plain delivery. The most common praise is for the real-world examples, which students say made the ideas click far better than definitions would. Advice like standing up straight, holding eye contact and not being afraid of others gets called old-fashioned but useful. The complaints are just as consistent. A fair number of three-star and four-star reviews call the material common knowledge, and one describes it as a list of how-to-be-a-functioning-adult aphorisms. One student found Naraine's pronunciation hard to follow, one wanted slides to go with the videos, and one objected to an anecdote that seemed to encourage unpaid overtime.

With roughly 76,000 students and more than 21,000 reviews, the course has an unusually large track record for something this short, and the rating breakdown backs it up: 86 percent of ratings are four or five stars and one-star reviews are rare. It sits beside soft-skills and neuroscience courses on our personal development list, and that is the honest pitch. This is a lunch-break refresher, not a program. Anyone who already knows the basics of confident communication will find little new here. For everyone else, it's a low-effort place to start before committing to something bigger.

Best forShy or introverted professionals who want a quick, example-driven framework for saying no and holding their ground.
Skip it ifYou've already read a book or two on confident communication; a good share of reviewers call this common knowledge.

Pros

  • Real-life examples fill about a quarter of the runtime, and reviewers say they make the ideas stick
  • Short, plain lessons: 31 lectures averaging under three minutes, easy to finish in one sitting
  • Refreshed in March 2023 with a 35-minute section on giving assertive feedback
  • Captions in 12 languages and 86 percent of more than 21,000 ratings at four or five stars

Cons

  • Several reviewers call the advice common knowledge, obvious to most working adults
  • One student found the instructor's pronunciation hard to follow, and another wanted slides to go with the videos
  • No quizzes or exercises, so putting any of it into practice is entirely on the student
Having actual real world examples as major segments of the course is fantastic. Actual practical insights given and not just theoretical definitions of what 'Assertiveness' actually is.

In this short, 60-minute guide I will tackle the topic of assertiveness (The initial 30-minute guide has been extended with an extra 30 minutes of assertiveness life examples)

Many people think that assertiveness is only linked to saying NO and therefore they negate everything.

The truth is that assertiveness is actually the ability to behave and communicate with others in a strong and confident way.

Assertive individuals are able to capture people’s attention and convey their message in a convincing manner.

They create harmony during their interaction with others. And this is exactly what I will teach you to do in this course.

Remember, there is no risk involved. Please, watch our preview videos and confirm that this is exactly the course you need.

Me being a bit of an introvert, this is giving me an insight and opportunity to see how I can change

By Rehnzo Panergo Pornelos on 7/31/2026

Having actual real world examples as major segments of the course is fantastic. Actual practical insights given and not just theoretical definitions of what 'Assertiveness' actually is. The extras are very helpful, particularly the 10 Actionable Secrets to Master by Jimmy Naraine. Most of his description hit straight at home and made me feel called out, which is great.

By Anumita Bagchi on 7/6/2026

Ridiculous anecdotes, the only useful section was on body language, right at the beginning. Encourages manipulating people to work unpaid overtime!

By Udemy User on 6/6/2026

So far, it’s very interesting. Great reminders and confidence builders.

By David Bedell on 1/13/2026

I like the everyday truths presented and what are considered "age-old advice" like standing up straight, eye contact, don't be afraid of others.

By Sharon Dube on 1/8/2026

I had a similar situation with my colleagues ,i did not know to how to deal with it cause of my confidence and l am a shy person

By Andrea Eble on 12/17/2025

So far so good. Very concise and useful capsules of information. Right to the heart of the matter, the point

By Robert Costantino on 12/4/2025

Instructor is doing a great job in presenting the material in a way that is easy to understand.

By Anonymized User on 11/25/2025

This felt like a lecture from daddy. A list of 'how to be a functioning adult' aphorisms. Really not sure why anyone would be impressed with this presentation. It wasn't bad, but the content should be obvious to anyone over the age of 30.
