Learn how to use your camera intuitively. Learn through doing rather than memorizing.

Our take

Based on the ratings of 7,378 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in April 2014. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a short, Nikon-specific introduction to the buttons and dials on a DSLR: seven lectures and about 71 minutes of video that cover exposure, aperture, shutter speed and the mode dial. The description says the exercises push the total to roughly 2.5 hours. It's aimed at absolute beginners, or people who own a Nikon, know a few settings, and still can't explain why aperture and shutter speed pull against each other. You need a Nikon with a model number starting with D; Canon owners should look elsewhere.

Students like JP Pullos's approach of learning by doing instead of memorizing charts of settings and results. One reviewer says he felt more confident changing settings on his camera right out of the gate, and another used it to get an old D100 working. The complaints are mild but consistent. The most common one is length: it feels a bit short, one reviewer found it less detailed than he was looking for, and another wanted more on the camera's hardware and symbols. One reviewer found the instructor's body language off-putting. The bigger issue is age. The course was last updated in April 2014, so it is more than a decade old, though the exposure basics haven't changed.

With 34,000 students and a 4.7 rating from more than 7,000 reviews, it has clearly worked for a lot of people, and about 60 percent of ratings are five stars. It is the only Nikon-specific course among our photography picks, and the 1-Hour Crash Course beside it is the closest match in length. A sensible first hour for a Nikon owner. Anyone who wants lighting, composition or editing will need a second course.

Best forNikon DSLR owners who have never left Auto and want the mode dial explained in about an hour.
Skip it ifYou shoot anything other than a Nikon D-series DSLR, or you already know how aperture and shutter speed work together.

Pros

  • Learn by doing: exercises on your own camera replace memorizing settings charts
  • One reviewer says he felt more confident changing settings right out of the gate
  • Short and focused: one section, seven lectures, about 71 minutes of video
  • 4.7 rating from more than 7,000 reviews, with 34,000 students enrolled

Cons

  • Last updated in April 2014, so more than a decade old with no updates since
  • Reviewers call it a bit short, with one wanting more on hardware and camera symbols
  • Only exposure and modes; no composition, lighting, focus or editing
Very easy to understand his methodology. Right out of the gate I feel more confident about changing settings on my camera.
Todd D Russell, a student

Genuinely for beginners: absolute novices with any D-series Nikon, plus owners who know a few settings but not why they work together.

Seems a bit short but maybe thats the nature of this topic i.e it does not require too much detail. Otherwise well presented and very educational for a total amateur as I am.

Great. First class exposure. I loved the concepts and how they worked. Simple.. 2 buttons. +/- and the wheel. What was odd, though, was I was having trouble reviewing my pictures. This has never happened before. I thought it might have something to do with the reset of the camera... but I don't know. I finally got it, and loved the contrast and the light.

Very nice introductory lesson to photography. It focuses on understanding light which is key in becoming a better photographer, and how a DSLR camera can manipulate the available light to achieve your creative goals. Some of the reviews have expressed that it is too theoretical and too general; however, I find that many other tutorials puts too much emphasis on too many details and fail to explain the bigger picture and main points in navigating a DSLR camera. This course made learning the Nikon DSLR quite approachable and less intimidating. Thank you JP!

Loved the way JP made the concepts so easy to grasp. The exercises made me get comfortable with my camera and the concepts that were being explained. And I could see the difference by my self by performing the exercises. My only feedback is that ISO wasn’t covered. But other than that. I totally enjoyed learning the basics of photography from JP. Thanks!

I bought a DSLR camera some years ago but never got to grips with it. My grandson has recently bought one and has started an online course, so I decided I would give an online course a try. Your beginner's course was way way better than my expectation. I am actually beginning to know my round my camera. Thank you very much.

By Steve Holmes on 5/11/2018

I enjoyed this course because the material covered was given with an explanation so that I felt a good understanding of it. The Instructor is very knowledgeable. He has a good and easy way of presenting the material with a clear understanding for you to learn by. I look forward to taking others classes from him in the future.

I found the course delivery par excellence. The content was well structured and well paced. The way it was presented ensured easy understanding of the very basic essentials of DSLR photography. The Language and the words chosen to convey the concepts were apt. I found the course very beneficial and have understood the concepts clearly. The best part of it all was, no memorization necessary. I really liked the presentation by JP. It was so friendly and fun that I am inclined to pursue other courses on photography by him. My special thanks to JP. Regards Manoj

I returned to the course repeating and reinforcing the concepts and teachings over several days. The course in structured in units that allow this approach in a positive manner. JP speaks clearly, explains the camera and its workings in a comprehensive yet easily understandable manner. I loved the course - thanks!

By Gwyneth Nicholls on 5/21/2017

JP's intuitive approach sat comfortably with me. I have tried to learn photography many times but have quickly become confused by too much technical information and jargon. The clear explanations and diagrams were most helpful and the little exercises helped me overcome an unreasonable fear of the camera.

By Andrew Lee on 1/29/2017

JP does an excellent job of explaining the basic concepts of photography. The class definitely seems geared towards true beginners, but I do wish it covered a few more topics. The content is strictly limited to aperture and shutter settings, and does not go into other important topics like ISO. It also did not seem particularly specific to Nikon cameras, which may or may not be a good thing.
