Cinema 4D Complete : Vol. 2. All about Modeling! (Udemy.com)

Master the polygon modeling, create any object you want

Created by: Lionel VICIDOMINI

Last updated January 2022

Our take

Based on the ratings of 424 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in January 2022. No course pays to be reviewed.

The second volume in Lionel Vicidomini's Cinema 4D series is a video manual of modeling. Across 22 hours and 169 lectures it works through polygon selection and transforms, splines, generators like Subdivision Surface, the full set of polygon commands, deformers, and OpenVDB modeling, then closes with 26 workshop lectures where you build a screw, a spoon, a soccer ball and other objects. It's listed as beginner level, but the requirements ask for basic Cinema 4D knowledge, and the instructor himself suggests the first volume for anyone new to 3D. Around 3,100 students have taken it, and 92 percent of the 423 ratings are four or five stars.

Students praise the depth. One reviewer who has used C4D for over a decade says the course taught things they never knew, and several call out that every tool comes with an example and that the instructor answers questions quickly. The most common complaint is that the practical work is saved for the workshops at the end, so the long middle sections can feel like a catalog of buttons rather than a way of working. A reviewer writing in German adds that the course leans toward organic shapes where exact dimensions matter less, and that the strong French accent takes some getting used to.

The recording dates from R23 and the last update was January 2022, so newer releases will look different, though modeling tools change slowly and the instructor says it follows back to R17. It's paid and sits beside broader beginner courses on our Cinema 4D page that cover the whole program rather than one part of it. If modeling is the part of C4D that matters to you, this is the deeper pick. Pair it with the first volume if the interface is still new.

Best forCinema 4D users who know the interface and want every modeling tool, generator and deformer explained in detail.
Skip it ifYou want project-based learning from the first lecture, or you need precise, dimension-driven hard-surface modeling.

Pros

  • Every modeling tool, generator and deformer gets its own explanation with a worked example.
  • 26 workshop lectures at the end build real objects: a screw, a spoon, a coffee cup, a soccer ball.
  • Reviewers say the instructor answers questions fast, and long-time C4D users still learned new things.
  • A full section on OpenVDB modeling as an alternative to pushing polygons by hand.

Cons

  • Practical projects are saved for the final workshops; the middle sections can feel like a button catalog.
  • Recorded on R23 and last updated in January 2022, so newer versions of Cinema 4D look different.
  • Strong French accent, and a lean toward organic shapes rather than dimensionally exact models.
Very thorough. Learning a lot of things I never knew and have been using C4D for well over a decade. Wish I had this course in 2008.

Listed as beginner, but it assumes you already know the Cinema 4D interface; true newcomers should do Vol. 1 first.

Course Description

In this second volume, you will learn everything there is to know about modeling!

Polygon modeling is at the core of every 3D application. Whatever field you are going to work in, you will need to know how to push points, edges and polygons to make your vision come true.

I’m Lionel VICIDOMINI, a Maxon Certified Instructor, Maxon Master Trainer and Motion Designer based in Paris, France. I believe that in order to truly master a software you have to learn it by the details. I have created this series of training, to create a video manual of Cinema 4D and to be the most thorough possible while being entertaining.

In this training you will learn :

  • How to select, move, scale and rotate polygons precisely, fluently, and as fast as possible to allow a smoother workflow

  • All about splines, those vector shapes that are so useful when you want to create complex objects

  • The generators, such as the mirror, the remesher and the all-powerful Subdivision Surface, at the very core of polygon modeling

  • The polygon commands, such as the extrude, bevel tool, but also the stich'n'sew and many less known tools

  • The deformers, which allow you to reshape objets to your needs or even create whole models from simple primitives

  • OpenVDB modeling, another way to create complex objects parametrically without the hassle of polygons

Several workshops in the end of the course will teach you real life examples and how to model many objects : a screw, a spoon, a coffee cup and its holder, a soccer ball and many others.

This training has been recorded on the R23 but you can follow it easily on previous versions of the software, down to R17.

It is not required to have followed the first volume of the series, but it can greatly help, especially if you are new to 3D.

Another great course from the author. It took me long time to finish. When I was stopping and returning back to studies. It gave a comprehensive overview of the all modelling tools and some nice practice examples. I doubt I can remember everything as the software is huge, but many thanks!

By Beloslava Karamfilova on 9/7/2023

I really liked the course. The instructor responds to the questions very fast and is knowledgable of the software. Only thing that I personally would've liked more is even more modeling and exercises and by that I mean that there were times where the sections would explain a specific feature or command of/in the software and I didn't find the example given really helpfull for me to imagine how I could use them in a real project. Other than that I had a great experience!

Awesome all-encompassing overview, my second course from this author as I am learning c4D coming from 3ds max for a specific client. A friendly recommendation to the author though; a high-quality microphone will pick up your every mouth sound, i.e. swallowing, clicking..... We all do it. However, presenters/podcasters will do basic clean up of these sounds in something like adobe audition. It's really really simple and will make it much easier on our ears - thanks.

This class is expansive, and I'm learning many concepts. But I'm concerned that the software and UI is outdated. I wish the lesson used the new software.

By David Levinson on 11/3/2022

This course is packed with information. The instructor very thoroughly goes over each tool used in the modeling process. I often refer back to one or another topic just to get a refresher on how a tool works. Note to newer students - don't expect to get it all the first time. It can be very dry if you just try to watch all the way through. Take notes, try the tools along the way and watch segments more than once.

if you think the course is so boring for you just take another course, I did it. I made something but after that, I found I lost time so I back to the course again, without knowledge about all the tools we will not succeed with this software. this is not photoshop or other software that you find some shortcut. just stick to the course you will see the result soon. I highly recommend it to everyone.

A definitive guide to Cinema 4D. Lionel explains modelling in a way that is accessible. C4D is a deep software, learning and remembering all the functions can be difficult. I plan on using his courses as a dictionary to be referenced as needed. His teaching method is consistent which puts his lessons at distinct advantage over YouTube tutorials.

I enjoyed the course thoroughly. The mentor is highly knowledgeable and knows his stuff. Now, I have much better confidence in Cinema 4D modelling than ever before. Highly recommended, and now on to his next Mograph course!!! I'd love to see his next courses on Texturing, Lighting and so on. Kindly continue to give us consecutive volumes. Thank you!

Complete course including all the details about every tool. Quite good as a profound course of all the features. Can be also used as an encyclopaedia of every possible tool in C4d to check the details of the tool when You need them. One needs to get used to French accent of the author, but after some lessons I do not notice it any more :) The most complete course I have ever done on C4d. Now I bought Mograph (vol 3). Hope also to get rigging and animation in future.
