Course Description

This is the second part of the Classical Guitar Essentials the advanced course. If you’ve been following the course since the beginning, you have reached to Grade 4 in London College of Music level, which is half way to the last grade. That’s huge! By now you should have a very solid foundation in the classical guitar, and you are comfortable reading standard sheet music notation.

We going to continue were we left off in the previous course, learning more scales and arpeggios and introducing your first 3 octaves scale which will open the fret board for you.

The first section deals with the technical work which is the scales and arpeggios for Grade 4 LCM, don’t skip this one as this section will prepare you for what’s coming. The ability to play these scales and arpeggios will raise your stamina and develop the muscle technique to be able to play for longer times.

Next, the repertoire section. I’ve chosen 3 pieces, each one with a different challenge:

  • The first one is “Etude in Em” by F. Tarrega, this study is required in Grade 4 LCM, and it’s a charming piece with one bar chord and a stretch in your left hand from fret 3 to fret 7! Don’t worry, you can do this.

  • The next piece is “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by Bach. A very well-known tune in the key of G major. It’s written in triplets and will test your knowledge in the arpeggio of G major and D major. So if you’ve forgotten these two I recommend that you go back and refresh your memory on them.

  • The last one is a surprise, it’s the main theme of “Game of Thrones”. Winter is coming and there is a very challenging bar chord in there. For the first time we are going to use a CAPO, without it you will not be able to do the bar chord as it’s impossible on the first position! So go and buy one if you don’t have a capo, trust me it’s worth it.

In section 3 we are going to learn about the intervals. This is an essential concept if you want to learn more about harmony. As this subject is a bit complicated to learn in one section - or even one course - I decided to give you a hint about it in this course, and continue with it in the next one. You’ll be amazed how important this subject is once you started playing the exercises. We finish this section with classic hit from The Beatles, Blackbird.

The last section I provide a very useful tools for you to help you organize your practicing. There’s an article about how to practice scales, the link will take you to an external website called Classical Guitar Corner, which I think is the best website online dedicated for the classic guitar. It’s a free article, you don’t even have to leave your email. Look around and I am sure you will find something to suit your needs or answer a question you have.

The final lecture has an article by me with a downloadable recourse to help you organize your practice routine. Print out the schedules and fill it like I describe in the article, it will greatly enhance the way you practice, and accelerate your progress.

Hani Gamal

Hi, I am Hany Gamal. I live in Egypt. I studied photography and video editing at fine art college. Then I took a 2 years course with the New York Institute of Photography.

I studied guitar with The Royal School of Music, and I finished Grade 8 guitar back in 2004.

My real passion is teaching, so I teach everything I know... photography, guitar, and even Rubik's Cube - which I can do in less than 2 minutes.

I worked as a freelance photographer, a camera-man, a video editor, and a guitar tutor at International British schools.

I run a chess club in my school where I work as a music and performing art director.

Interesting and easy to follow lectures as always. The mix of classical and contemporary fingerstyle pieces is nice. I haven't really encountered any (minor) mistake, so the quality is very good. Sometimes Hani is a bit fast. He says that it's intentional.

I think this is an excellent course. I may start out not liking a piece but then after practicing the piece multiple times, I end up really liking it. I like the different type of challenges Mr. Gamal presents. It's all good!

Excellent teacher and classes Mr Hank Gamal excellent teacher good scale work very effectively taught! intervals might be in other keys not just C and G Lágrima by Tarrega teacher learned differently, a creative note in the E- minor section and tempi (are we REALLY A-D-D? or just kidnapped???) —I was tortured so my hands don’t work, it is very interesting to have these teachers go through their learnings of songs. More pro guitarists should offer their ‘ breakdowns’ of stuff as there is SO much fascinating info from pro musicians . Very commercially friendly. Great stuff Udemy. More pro breakdowns of style, songs, techniques!! at prior or fellow pro musician level.

I enjoy the teaching style and am progressing through the courses. I particularly like the first piece in this course (Etude) but, now that it is in my fingers, it is nice also to be able to play some Bach (Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring). The theory is well taught too, though I am not sure why we stop just shy of completing the second octave in the 6ths exercise in C, but I worked it out. I find the inclusion of tabs distracting (e.g. in JJoMD) as my eyes keep slipping onto the tab line. I took a screen shot and copied the piece into Word and then blanked out the tab, so not a major issue but hassle and I'd prefer only the music (or the music and the tab set out separately), especially as you can't really learn classical guitar and only read tabs, but I guess there will be others who disagree. But this is another good course ion a great series. Thanks.

I love Hani's courses. He's an excellent teacher and his courses are well structured and everything builds on what you've learned before. It's very systematic. Whenever any of my friends ask about how to build a solid foundation for the classical guitar, I point them right to Hani's series. The only reason I didn't give this a full 5 stars is that I would have like one more solid classical piece in course 6 at the end to cap things off. That said, I will be reviewing the material in this series over and over for some time to come as I believe they've built a great foundation and repetition is a great way to fortify these important learnings. Thank you Hani!

Excellent match for me. Short chunks broken down note by note, string by string, finger by finger. I learn much quicker when the instructor goes slower. Hani gets this. A great teacher.

Thanks Hani, I enrolled in this course in order to ease myself back into the guitar which I had abandoned for some years. In the past I completed Grade 6 when I lived in the UK. I was delighted you were following the London school, so I thought I would start at Grade 4 level. This was perfect and the way you teach is just what I needed. Just one thing though, I tried unsuccessfully so far, to join the facebook group and I cannot find anywhere on Udemy to contact you.

Great course from a great Teacher. Thank you so much Mr.Hani, I really enjoyed this one it took the longest time to complete. but at the end I'm very happy with my progress.

By Leticia Golubov on 6/20/2020

Absolutely loved all the songs I learned (am still learning) in this one!!! Challenging, but not so challenging that it made me want to give up. Probably one of my favourites of all the ones I've completed. The concepts learned are also very useful, I feel I've really progressed. Thanks Hani!

This is my sixth classical guitar course I have taken with Hani Gamal. Studying classical guitar with his masterful instructional techniques has opened a whole new music world to me. His teaching method is step-by-step, offering extremely clear explanations with each step and with excellent visual representations . I feel so very grateful to Mr. Gamal ; so very lucky to be learning under his fine teaching. I have taken many on-line courses and for me his have been the best by far.
