Our take
Based on the ratings of 21 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in October 2019. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a short JavaScript starter built around one goal, getting into a coding bootcamp. Ian Robinson says he was accepted at both Hack Reactor and App Academy in 2016, and says he built the course to cut the wasted study time he put in. It runs about three hours over 48 lectures. Most lectures sit in a Responsive Web Design Certification section, which one reviewer links to freeCodeCamp. The rest covers setup, JavaScript basics, algorithm practice and a little interview prep. The listing says it is for beginners only.
Reviewers like how easy it is to follow. One says the exercises alongside the instructor are good and that it shows the practical side of programming. A self-described total newcomer says they are starting to understand the process. The complaints are mostly about fit. Teaching is done on a Mac, and the audience list tells Windows users not to bother, though one reviewer says it is easy to follow on either and another on an HP found it harder. The Atom editor shown is no longer used, and the last update was October 2019. Other editors work fine, per one reviewer.
At 4.6 stars from 21 reviews, with 13 fives and nothing below three stars, the feedback is warm, but the sample is small and only 161 students have enrolled. The interview practice is two lectures and 13 minutes, so treat this as a warm-up, not full interview prep. It suits a Mac-using beginner who wants a quick, gentle start before a bootcamp application. Anyone who already writes code, or wants real algorithm depth, will outgrow it fast.
Pros
- Reviewers call it easy to follow, with exercises done alongside the instructor
- Taught by an instructor who says he got into both Hack Reactor and App Academy
- Short at about three hours of video, so it is a quick first step for a beginner
- Includes a Responsive Web Design Certification section that one reviewer ties to freeCodeCamp
Cons
- Taught on a Mac, and the listing warns Windows users off; an HP owner found it harder
- Last updated October 2019, and the Atom editor it uses is no longer used
- Interview practice is only two lectures, so it will not cover technical interviews in depth
I'm as new as they come with anything software related and I'm finding that I'm actually starting to understand the process, thanks to this course.
True beginners fit; the course says experienced programmers should skip it and Windows users are warned off.

Course Description
If you've made a commitment to yourself to attend a coding bootcamp, but don't know where to start, this course might be a great fit for you.
In 2016 I made a commitment to attend one of the top schools in San Francisco. My heart was set on App Academy, but I would have been happy with Hack Reactor or MakerSquare.
After studying all year, when July came around I applied to all three and I was accepted into Hack Reactor and App Academy.
I studied from February to July with all the spare time I could muster. A LOT of it was time spent in activities that weren't especially helpful.
In this course I break down computer programming visually so you can learn the concepts much faster than I did.
This course is dedicated to helping you receive your acceptance letter to the coding bootcamp of your dreams.

This course is the perfect start for beginners looking to create code on their own. Instructor teaches with Mac but is easily followed along with either Windows or Mac. ATOM the text editor mentioned in this is no longer used, but there are plenty other text editors out there to utilize and still follow along with this course. 2 in 1 course, receive a certification from freecodecamp along with the certification from completing this course. Great way to jumpstart yourself into knowledge if you are coming from little to know experience. Truly the perfect course for a bootcampprep. Actual code written and executed through this course was definitely basic and for beginners, even if you know the basics - this very much helped with tips and tricks, how to navigate your terminal, gaining comfortability with coding and limiting your use of the computer mouse is key for efficiency and I am still using all of these tricks i first learned from this course and instructor.

This course shows you not only the programming basics but also the practical programming world which is, in my opinion, very important. It is very easy to understand the lessons and this course has a great exercises to do along with the instructor.
