Our take
Based on the ratings of 42,612 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in August 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a short, single-presenter talk on how to listen better, not a skills program. It runs about 77 minutes across 14 lectures, and nine of those sit in the Outer listening section, the longest block at 43 minutes. Julian Treasure, a sound and communication speaker with several widely watched TED talks, does all the teaching. The audience list is broad: managers, parents, salespeople, spouses. The only requirement is intermediate English, so it suits almost anyone who wants a gentle reset on how they pay attention.
Reviewers mostly like it. They call the explanations clear and simple, and one says it linked work and personal life well. Another singles out the exercises. The criticism is mild. One reviewer found the delivery dry and hard to focus on, another doesn't enjoy listening to just one person, and a third called it a rehash of ideas they already knew. One more called it basic. The rating split fits: nearly 88 percent give four or five stars, and about 11 percent give three.
The last update was in 2017, but advice about listening ages slowly, so that matters less than it would for software. At 77 minutes it is short, so expect ideas and a few exercises, not deep practice. More than 92,000 students have taken it. It is a good, low-effort starting point if you will do the exercises yourself. If you already know active listening techniques, expect it to feel light.
Pros
- Short enough to finish in one sitting: 77 minutes across 14 lectures
- Reviewers call the explanations clear and simple to follow
- Ties listening to both work and personal relationships, which reviewers liked
- Includes exercises that at least one reviewer singled out as useful
Cons
- Last updated in 2017, with no newer material added since
- One presenter throughout, which a reviewer found dry and hard to focus on
- Light on practice: no quizzes or assignments, and some find it basic or a rehash
Although basic..somehow listening well is an art and skill. It takes effort and time to listen. Thank you.
Open to all levels. Only intermediate English is required, and the audience list runs from parents to managers.

Course Description
Listening is a crucial part of our ability to communicate and succeed. It affects how well we build and maintain relationships, teach and manage, sell and persuade, and appreciate and understand. Our business and personal lives are often determined by it. As a species, we have been listening to survive and thrive throughout our millions of years of evolution - until recently.
Listening is not a natural skill: it takes focus and consciousness to do it well. And yet we don't teach it in schools, so in our always-on, multi-tasking world it is a skill that many people simply have never developed. The result of this is a restricted ability to communicate and engage, particularly among the young who have grown up using text-based communication as their primary and preferred mode of expression.
As an international speaker and author on these skills, I understand the impact of listening on communication, success and wellbeing. My TED talk on conscious listening is in the rare group that have achieved millions of views, and my book How To Be Heard is an award-winning bestseller. I live to listen, and look forward to sharing the secrets of listening with you.
So join me as I help you become a master of Conscious Listening and bring confidence and control to your communication.

The information presented helps to explain the many different ways that a person needs to listen to others to be able to fully understand the other person and to help the other person get out of the conversation what they also need.

Thought the instructor spoke clearly and the visuals aided in understanding subject matter. Think the course should've been longer.

I really liked the section about critical and emotional listening and listening to just solve the problem and move on, or to connect. I think this is very useful in my every day life. Thank you

Yes, I need to sharpen my listening skill. Learn to talk less and listen more for understanding & not to respond all the time.
