CoreData for iOS Development in Swift

This course was created and updated for Core Data with the latest Swift 4.x (as of WWDC 2018), targeted for both iOS 12 and 11. We will be using the latest Xcode 10 (Beta) as well as Xcode 9.4 for the course coverage.

If your project is dealing with older version of Core Data in iOS 9 or prior, and you intend to learn the previous version, my other course Mastering iOS Core Data with Swift is the course you want.

What is Core Data? Why should I know about Core Data?

Core Data is one of the most powerful framework that Apple has provided for developer. "Core Data is a framework that you use to manage the model layer objects in your application. It provides generalized and automated solutions to common tasks associated with object life cycle and object graph management, including persistence." - Source from Apple".

If you are passionate about learning mobile development for iOS and looking to take your iOS development skills to the next level, Core Data framework should be at the top of your list.

By the time you are done with CoreData for iOS Development in Swift course, you will be ready and very confident to take on any Core Data project coming your way. On top of that, you will be one step closer to become a well rounded iOS developer.

What's in it for me?

In this course I will take you on a journey in the world of Core Data. We will cover all the important aspects of Core Data:

  • Entity

  • Entity Inheritance

  • Attribute Type

  • Relationships

  • ManagedObjectContext

  • ManagedObject

  • PersistentContainer

  • Handling JSON data

  • Predicate

  • CompoundPredicate

  • Fetching

  • Batch Fetching and Update

  • Object Deletion

  • Asynchronous Fetching

  • NSFetchedResultsController

  • Aggregate Functions

  • Grouping

  • Caching

  • Performance Tuning and Best Practices

  • Data Model Versioning

  • Automatic Lightweight Migration

  • Manual Migration with Model Mapping

  • Background process

  • Automatic Subclass and Class Extension Generation

Throughout this course we will look in detail the Core Data framework to provide data storage functionality in iOS applications. We will start by creating a simple app that is utilizing Core Data framework, building our own Core Data stack and eventually using all different Core Data features into our application.

Performance Tuning and Best Practices

We will cover the various ways on fetching our data and how to efficiently using Core Data in our app. Unit testing and performance tuning will be an important part on how we can monitor our app performance in conjunction with Core Data in our application.

Along with Core Data versioning, migration and iCloud integration, I will take you on developing 5 iOS applications and how we can integrate all of these components into Core Data.

Do at your own pace

Lots of students have different methods of learning. Through out this course I will provide both the starter and final Xcode project solution, so you can either follow along one step at a time or you can jump directly to the final solution. And by the end of this Core Data for Swift Development course, you should be comfortable and ready to integrate Core Data framework in your application.

As a novice developer this helps me really well. But at places this book should present more theoretical details and why one should use these concepts - 90% its very well narrated but for certain concepts like Fault, refresh(_:mergeChanges:), stalenessInterval should have been more details to make this lecture a 5 Star one.

Great instructor and course. Core Data is quite complex and difficult but Andi makes it easy as a piece of cake for a quite experienced iOS developer. He goes into extreme details and structures the lessons and explanations in a way that helped me out not only regarding Core Data but also other concepts included in the course. Keep on the good work!

Amazing Course! Probably the most detailed Core Data course available. You'll learn from doing simple CRUD to having to do threading and migration. If I have to nitpick, I wish it included having to handle the data when the app terminates or goes into background. But really great!

For beginners, it's complicated.

I have worked through the first few modules, so I will update my review as I get further. So far, I really like the step by step build out of the sample app to demonstrate the topic. Explanation of details are inconsistent. In some cases, the instructor does a great job of showing how a step ties elsewhere in the code or application (such as when showing how the default alert box field name is set). However, in other places, he doesn't do a good job explaining how the Core Data classes are referenced in LessonService class. Also, while he types in the code, he often realizes that he needs to create other code, so he leaves the line incomplete and then jumps to add the needed code. While that is the way a developer thinks while writing code, it is poor for teaching material because while concentrating on one concept, he bounces to another one. I then have to go back and retrace all the code after everything is written to really understand it.

This course has complex application framework styling. It focuses more on application design, while adding the corresponding CoreData plugins. I think it might be better to call the course Intermediate Swift 4.2 Application Development with CoreData. The current name may be a little misleading. I wanted the course to focus on CoreData, only, and not to confuse the students with application design. I’m combining the instruction with Brian Advent’s CoreData course (Brian’s course only supports Swift 3, but it is a pure CoreData focus, which is what I’m looking for). However the instruction in this course is very good.

Andi is the best instructor for coredata i have ever seen.I wish more amazing course on core data in future. Please make another ecommerce application like "Building a Store Front App". In which all the concept of core data will be covered. like "performace tuning", "thread management", "private querying", "Schema migration". Thanks

Overall this is a great course and very well structured. The instructor is very knowledgeable and responsive to my questions, which is greatly appreciated. If your looking to learn about CoreData and Tableviews, this course is for you. It covers tons of information at a nice steady pace. I also own a number of other courses from Andi and I recommend those as well. I look forward to your future courses. - Thank You.

I don't want to gush praise but this is the very best iOS course I've taken on many levels. The author is teaching me how to use CoreData in the real world, as for example, the "home report" and I am learning quite a few new iOS app functions such as UISegmentedControl. I hope the author will attack CloudKit next.

An updated edition of Andi's previous course. Still an excellent course to learn about core data. Course started out with good pace to bring beginner Swift on board with core data then continue with faster pace. It is gradually moving from basic to more advanced topic. The diversity in the sample projects are interesting. It is one of the best intermediate level course for Swift/iOS, particularly in Core Data.
