Course Description
Welcome to the Django Mastery Course: Mastering Database Interactions
This course is designed to help you build a solid understanding of Django’s Object-Relational Mapper (ORM) and how to work with databases effectively in your web applications. Whether you're new to Django or looking to deepen your skills, you'll gain practical, hands-on experience with tools and techniques used in real-world projects.
Important Notice: Business Subscribers - Before Starting the Course
Please be aware that this course requires the use of a third-party application that must be installed on your machine (Python, Docker and VSCode). Before beginning the course, ensure that you have the necessary permissions to install software on your work device or consult with your employer or IT department. We recommend confirming installation access in advance to avoid any delays in your learning experience. Thank you for your understanding.
Who This Course Is For
New developers who are starting with Django and want a clear, hands-on introduction to working with databases.
Learners who prefer a structured, practical approach to understanding Django ORM without needing deep SQL knowledge.
Experienced developers looking to strengthen their Django skills, especially around database performance and scalability.
Development teams aiming to build scalable, maintainable Django applications with clean, efficient data models.
Why Django ORM Is Important
One of Django's standout features is its Object-Relational Mapper (ORM), a powerful tool that empowers developers to interact with databases seamlessly. Django’s ORM allows developers to interact with databases using Python code instead of raw SQL. Most of the database interactions you'll perform will be through Django’s ORM—giving you the tools to build scalable and maintainable applications without getting deep into SQL syntax.
What You’ll Learn
This course takes you from the fundamentals to advanced techniques in Django database management. You'll gain practical skills in:
Model Definition: Structuring your data using Django models
Data Management: Inserting, updating, and deleting records
Querying Data: Filtering, retrieving, and manipulating data with the ORM
Aggregation & Optimization: Performing advanced queries and improving performance
Best Practices: Organizing models, writing efficient queries, and maintaining clean, scalable code

I bought this course for in-depth learning about ORM. The quick rush over Docker at the start is pretty unfortunate. The topic of the course is "ORM" and even if Docker might be state-of-the-art or "so easy to use" it builds an additional hurdle immediately at the start for people just curious about ORM, right? No chance to explain ORM differently without Docker? Is Docker really "you must have this, otherwise no chance to learn ORM". Surely not, right? Your approach to explaining ORM ist akin to teaching someone a golf-swing starting off hitting a driver arguing that "in the real world you will have to be familiar with the driver". If, however, the student does not know how to hit an ordinary golf club (iron), that student will struggle immediately from the start. So, the title of the course was "ORM" and I would have expected ORM and not Docker. In addition, is all that detail with django ninja really really needed or is ist just making things even much more intricate by design of the course? Bottom-line: without Docker and django-ninja this could be a 15-20 hours course. Keep the beginners in mind. I moved to django-extensions to run my function with my orm_script.py to see ORM in the terminal rather than doing ninja with all its huge details and ninja-pages only shown for fractions of seconds to the student. Why all this intricate detail that forces the student to run the video at 50% of speed or stop and start over and over with all this huge pseudo level of detail? Showing off something or mindfully ensuring that student ends up confused about everything? Why all this edge-case stuff? "An elephant may cross the road from the left and for this situation one should know etc etc"....

Thanks for the great intro to Docker, followed by the great coverage of the PL SQL imbedded into the project. This is the first Django course I have undertaken that explains these links, how everything is stitched together, and presents a real-world type example of tasks that are required. In most cases not to much detail, leaving me to figure out a few things, but not too much to bore me with repetitive stuff. Very well presented. Deserves more than 5 stars!

I found this course fantastic. Two particular points to note: - A real plus in terms of the knowledge acquired, allowing you to browse the Django documentation without constraint on topics not covered in this course. - In addition to technical skills, the teaching also provides professional thinking on the different ways of looking at database development. An important point is the implementation of tests on the various aspects of tables. In particular, communication between Docker containers. If you're on Linux, you may have a random problem between container communication. Solved here: [SOLVED] Unable to connect 'django-ecommerce_dev-network' with docker sdk

This course is alright, not the best. There is some value in the lessons but I found it difficult to stay engaged and want to finish the course. Zander obviously knows what he's talking about and there is value in that but I think this course could have been at least 10-15 hours shorter. I think the examples could have been more engaging and more time and effort could have been spent in setting up these lessons with scenarios that may be applied in real life situations. I believe some of these lessons are on youtube for free and would recommend you watch them there, as they are fairly useful, but I wouldn't recommend them here on Udemy.

This course is what I needed to understand Django ORM, after this course I definitely understand more and know how to build a good database structure, there are a lot of tips and valuable comments on what to pay attention to and how to use them in your own projects, the lessons are well explained, nothing more is needed, if someone wants to understand how to build Django databases, I recommend it without a doubt, you will not be disappointed.

One of the best courses I've ever watched. Great for beginners, but experienced users will find something interesting too. Excellent presentation of material, structure, absence of errors and inconsistencies in the code. I recommend this course for viewing by both beginners and experienced (selective viewing) Django developers. Thanks to the author for his work!

Great course, really good to dive deep into raw SQL. But I miss other important features like select_related, prefetch_related, annotations, aggregations. Other tools from django.db etc. Also there was lot of repetition but this is ok if I would ever need to go back to the specific section because sections are somehow unit tested. :D

UPDATED 2024: I like the way Xander updates the course and answers questions. Makes for a good resource. Xander goes into great depth about ORM. Very useful are sections on Signals, various User model patterns as well as using if one wants Docker for PostgreSQL. If too thorough ins some lectures, jsut pick and choose. Well worth doing. Thanks!

So far it certainly has the information, though I feel it isn't well designed for people who have a working knowledge of django. Unfortunately the instructor is quite dry, and though he explains things thoroughly I have a hard time paying attention. Though he provides an inventory code base to follow along with, you don't get to code it along with him and I find that disconnects me from what is happening. That said, there appears to be information in here that I would not get from other courses, so I persist. Perhaps it is simply a matter of style.

The information is good at this point - we have gone off on a few tangents that make the SQLite extension portion a little difficult to follow, and the requirements.txt information seemed to come out of left field to me, but it's still good information. Mostly an organizational issue on this section.
