Course Description
RS-485 is the de facto workhorse of data communications in the field of plant automation.
It is very effective in applications with significant electrical interference (noise) requiring a long transmission distance. Thus, the standard is often used in industrial applications. It is as an inexpensive local area network (LAN) connection that allows multiple receivers to connect within a multi drop configuration. RS-485 does not include a communications protocol.
This course delivers the theoretical and practical aspects of RS-485 in a very effective way, so that at the end, you will be able to build, maintain and troubleshoot any RS-485 based network in the plan automation field. The course features a live physical connection between a PLC and a Computer via a USB-to-RS485 converter, an example that is key to effective troubleshooting of RS-485 systems.
After completing this course, you will be able to integrate devices from the same manufacturers and different manufacturers, that are RS-485 compliant, to form a complete seamless network.

Emile Ackbarali
I have been working in the fields of Software Development, Software Systems Integration and Process Automation since 1996. In 2003, I stepped out on my own and started working for myself providing software development and systems integration services to small and medium businesses.
Teaching has always been a passion for me. I have taught at the tertiary level for many years on the subjects of programming, control systems as well as systems integration. In the last few years I found myself incorporating more and more videos into the curriculum with amazing results.
When I heard of uDemy I just could not help but sign up. With teaching in a classroom, you can reach only so many students, but with uDemy you can reach the world! I plan to publish and promote as many courses as I possibly can on the uDemy platform.

I would like to have more info on a) how one determines how many transceivers one can connect to an RS485 network - it is mentioned 32 max, having in mind 1 Unit Load = Impedance 12kOhms. Still, there are transceivers on the market with lower input impedance. b) Measuring units would be preferable to have SI additionally. c) Cable lengths and Terminal Resistances' impact on the network.

This is an excellent course that explains RS-485 communications in a clear and practical way. The combination of theory and real-world demonstrations, especially the PLC-to-computer connection example, made the concepts easy to understand and apply. Excelent explanation on communication parameters, cabling standards, configuration, and troubleshooting. Thank you!

I felt that that every lecture was structured in a clear and concise manner. Each lecture felt pertinent to the subject and I have found the examples used very practical and this has helped my understanding of serial communications and made me more confident and enthusiastic at work.

One the one hand this course is designed quite simple to introduce that topic to absolute beginners, on the oher hand some better diagrams/sketches would have made it easyer to understand. For example: Just show the measurement of a logic analyzer to introduce the reason why a start bit and a stop bit is used and why the wrong setting of the baud rate will lead into a data mismatch.

So far, there is only one other lecturer that has videos as good as these ones. I rarely see people who not only make high quality presentations but actually go through the extra step to give examples and show how things are actually done. Excellent for anyone trying to get a process automation team together.

Just seemed like it is stated that clock rate setting is only practical for asynchronous. Also it is misleading to say that there is another separate wire for Clock when using synchronous.

Great introduction to RS485. In particular the coverage of situations where there are errors in settings or physical setup. Emile is a friendly engaging instructor and the course was a pleasure to take as well as helping me to solidify my RS485 knowledge.

This course has been brilliant, many times at work (the great secrets) engineers would work on systems with problems solve them with no credible explanations. So was always curious to what had happened & why, (that's the negative side), but left enough curiosity for me myself to search & dig a little deeper to get the real understanding. Even though I have read a few books I always got stuck & found this so frustrating . But now through Udemy & your brilliant courses I have started to learn & understand many of the basic concepts & workings of these basic controls & networks systems even other interfaces such as the RS232 connecting my laptop to other controller types. I understand that you will have many students from different levels of skills & understanding but highly recommend yours course that are very good with your explanations & clear examples. I actually love the parts where you can actually download/purchase software, Hardware from eBay is also very cheap so that you can just practice practice & practice. 10/10 & thank you. Ash

The Author, Emile Ackbarali, is clearly experienced with the subject. He has an accent, but it is VERY intelligible to myself as an American. He speaks with confidence. He has clearly thought-out what he intends to teach, and he takes VERY concise bites of the subject matter. If you have lots of time, you can keep watching, section after section. However, if you run short on time, or have something "come up"... the lectures are short enough that you can either opt to finish-up... or if you have to come back later, you don't waste time hunting for where you left off. I like his format very much.

While the course just covers the fundamentals, I like the practical approach. Unfortunately, I was experiencing loads of streaming issues along the way, which, of course, is not a problem of this course itself. Sometimes, I feel the explanation a bit too redundant.
