Welcome to the COMPLETE Music COMPOSITION AND FILM SCORING Guide! The most popular film scoring online course!
This is a class designed for the average person who is ready to take their music career (or music interest) and develop it into something more. Whether you are an active musician or an aspiring musician, this class is perfect for you.
In this course, we will learn the essential techniques used in writing music for the film. Through a series of analysis' of well-known film scenes from your favorite movies we will learn what makes a great cue, and then apply those techniques by writing our own. I'll be showing you some of my own projects for film and television throughout the class, and walk you through my process when composing music for a film project.
By the end of this course, students will understand the tools, lingo, and techniques used in the film composing world and will be ready to dive into their own projects. I'll walk you through how to get started on your first project by using freely available movies that need a score.
Throughout my career, I've worked with major American orchestras, film studios, and video game designers. I'm also a Ph.D. in music composition and a university professor (of music composition).
Recently I was named as a semi-finalist for the Grammy Foundation's Music Educator of the Year award because of my in-person university classes. Now I'm taking those classes to Udemy in an online format in order to reach more students and give them the joy of Music Theory.
I'm planning on making several "sections" of this class, and this is Part 1. As the class grows, we will go deeper and deeper into my techniques.
In this class, we will cover:

As an introductory course to both film scoring and music in general, it's good enough. I guess I had higher expectations for this one. Having a considerable music background and a few months of studying film scoring independently, I feel this course is not what I was looking for, it lacks some depth at times. Wouldn't buy it again, but there's definitely some good takeaways. Also, I think the course would improve greatly if the cues developed throughout the lessons were a little better. They do a great job of illustrating some key concepts, but could definitely do better.

I love the approach of this course. It is a great way to understand the basics of film scoring and know how to employ some fundamental techniques to get a project off the ground quickly.

I’m an Australian based composer and arranger. This course was the perfect fit, providing an exploration into the interesting field of film composition techniques, presented in a succinct professional environment.
By Charles Jennison on 12/3/2023
This is really what I was looking for in a course on writing music for film; the focus is on writing the music to evoke an emotional response the director is looking for. I can figure out the technical applications later.
By Jeffrey Lee on 8/18/2023
This is one of the best, most informative, practical, and easy to follow courses that you can take. I really how everything is broken down and explained, so that you get most out of the course.

Long way to go to the level of a Mr. Zimmer. But this course has helped to understand that it is not just black magic. It was very interesting and entertaining at the same time. Being a whole-hearted music and music production amateur (from lat. amare = to love) it was the right background information for me. Probably will listen much more to the soundtrack when in the cinema

I enjoyed and learned for sure. And to review things that I already know is always beneficial. I think the tricky thing about courses online like this is finding the one that fits your level and experience. And then so much of music becomes about personal choices. For me, personally - and not meant as a criticism because I think Jason is very knowledgeable and talented - I wish there had been more focus on writing and orchestrating. It felt to me it was more technological based - manually inputting notes sort of randomly as opposed to writing a piece and orchestrating and manipulating samples for a scene. Anyway - he was very clear and informative, and I will peruse other courses to see if there might be something else for me. It's always reaffirming to see I'm basically on the right track in how I'm doing things! Thank you!

So far there is a lot of repeating the same thing over and over. I get it. Maybe a bit too slow paced for me so far. But let's see how it progresses.
By Biswadeep Nath on 9/16/2021
This is my second course with Jason after Composition bundle, very clear and precise way of giving information and also in a light friendly manner, feels like I am learning something from a friend or elder brother.
By Bernie Landry on 5/31/2021
Excellent course. I use to do music for television in the late 80's - early 90's. * track Scully and midi connected by SMPTE. Really like the demonstrations as you compose. Look forward to part 2
