From 0 to 1: Hive for Processing Big Data (Udemy.com)

End-to-End Hive : HQL, Partitioning, Bucketing, UDFs, Windowing, Optimization, Map Joins, Indexes

Created by: Loony Corn

Last updated January 2018

Our take

Based on the ratings of 1,045 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in January 2018. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a lecture-driven tour of Apache Hive, about 15 hours across 87 lectures. It starts with install and HDFS basics, then moves through HiveQL, subqueries, partitioning, bucketing, windowing, join optimizations and custom functions in Java and Python. Two sections explain how Hive turns queries into MapReduce. It is aimed at analysts and engineers, and it expects SQL going in. Java matters only for the custom function sections. A SQL primer sits at the end, so beginners have to jump ahead and watch it first.

Reviewers like the clear, simple explanations from Loony Corn, the team of Janani Ravi and Vitthal Srinivasan, and say the real-world examples and the SQL versus Hive comparisons help. Of 1,045 ratings, 846 are four or five stars. The complaints are consistent. Several people found it slow and repetitive, and others wanted code-along exercises, saying it feels like reading a book. One reviewer noted fuzzy audio in places, another said the primer skips topics it promised, and installation questions get little help in the Q&A.

The last update was January 2018, and one reviewer notes it was built in mid-2016, so it may not cover newer Hive features. At this length it works as a patient first pass rather than a deep one, and one reviewer wanted a faster pace with more content. Pick it if you know SQL and like having each idea explained carefully. If practice problems matter to you, look elsewhere. For understanding what Hive does under the hood, it holds up.

Best forAnalysts who know SQL and want Hive explained patiently, including how queries turn into MapReduce.
Skip it ifYou want hands-on exercises, current Hive versions, or a fast pace with real industry projects.

Pros

  • Explanations are slow and clear enough that newcomers to Hive can follow along
  • Two sections show how Hive turns Select, Group By and Join into MapReduce
  • Covers partitioning, bucketing, windowing and map joins plus Java and Python UDFs
  • Built-in SQL primer for people who need to catch up on joins and Group By

Cons

  • Few hands-on exercises, no quizzes or coding tasks, so it plays like a lecture
  • Last updated in 2018 and built in 2016, so newer Hive topics may be missing
  • Slow and repetitive in places, with some fuzzy audio and little Q&A help
It's quite detailed ... one can understand enough to start to experiment with Hive
Balasubrahmanyam Estamsetty, a student

Listed for all levels, but it assumes working SQL. Java is needed only for the custom function sections.

Course Description

Prerequisites: Hive requires knowledge of SQL. The course includes and SQL primer at the end. Please do that first if you don't know SQL. You'll need to know Java if you want to follow the sections on custom functions.

Taught by a 4 person team including 2 Stanford-educated, ex-Googlers  and 2 ex-Flipkart Lead Analysts. This team has decades of practical experience in working with large-scale data.

Hive is like a new friend with an old face (SQL). This course is an end-to-end, practical guide to using Hive for Big Data processing.

Let's parse that

A new friend with an old face: Hive helps you leverage the power of Distributed computing and Hadoop for Analytical processing. It's interface is like an old friend : the very SQL like HiveQL. This course will fill in all the gaps between SQL and what you need to use Hive.

End-to-End: The course is an end-to-end guide for using Hive:  whether you are analyst who wants to process data  or an Engineer who needs to build custom functionality or optimize performance - everything you'll need is right here. New to SQL? No need to look elsewhere. The course  has a primer on all the basic SQL constructs, .

Practical: Everything is taught using real-life examples, working queries and code .

What's Covered:

Analytical Processing: Joins, Subqueries, Views, Table Generating Functions, Explode, Lateral View, Windowing and more

Tuning Hive for better functionality: Partitioning, Bucketing, Join Optimizations, Map Side Joins, Indexes, Writing custom User Defined functions in Java. UDF, UDAF, GenericUDF, GenericUDTF,  Custom functions in Python,  Implementation of MapReduce for Select, Group by and Join

For SQL Newbies: SQL In Great Depth

This is a very well course about Hive, but I think it needs some organization because it seems that only has divided the topics into each integrate of the team. I think, first they have to teach about basic SELECT queries and go into depth with advanced topics.

By Jeff Joy on 12/27/2018

Excellent content and well presented. Great mobile interface, few courses can say that. Maybe a little slow with a lot of repetition. Not necessarily bad for those new to hive, but I’d have liked a faster pace with even more content. Overall, a very good course and well worth the time and money.

By Mayank Rathi on 7/7/2018

Excellent course. Well worth the money. Please note that course was developed in mid-2016 and might not contain latest topics in hive

By Rajesh on 4/10/2018

Hive for processing big data is very informative and good technical presentation. All examples are taken from real world scenarios and explained very clearly. More over comparison of Traditional SQL and HIVE is very helpful. Thanks

By Chiranjit Majumdar on 12/8/2017

No doubt a good starting point. If you know little bit HIVE and looking for specific things, this is not for you. But if you want to know HIVE fro ground, you should definitely take this. Great work team, keep it up.

By Kevin Strosing on 7/31/2017

Excellent guide for learning Hive as a total big data beginner! Everything is explained in great detail. The only bad point I have are the slides, which are sometimes too fast or not totally synchronized with the voice, which makes it a bit hard to follow. But with a quick pause and reading the slides before, it's absolutely fine. I can only recommend this course to everyone who never worked with Hive before, even someone who doesn't have any knowledge about SQL, a small course for SQL is also provided. All in all, really great content. Great work!

By Avinash on 1/26/2017

The theoretical part of explaining the course is good. But as a student I am expecting more 'code along' chapters along with the course. This course is like reading a book. Please put more time in practical training classes. Thanks.

By Sayooj on 9/26/2016

As a veteran database programmer, my primary focus while entering this course was to understand how HQL compares to SQL. This course touches upon that in every section I have covered so far and I feel fairly confident about taking on a new project that leverages Hive.

By Srinivas Uddanti on 9/22/2016

Would love to see more examples on UDF's and some complex real world scenarios. Also like to see some information about types of logic that is suitable to MAP and Reduce phases. May be an advanced course on HIVE.

By Krishnakumar Ravishankar on 9/3/2016

The content is really good, it would be best if we use Virtualbox Sandbox (Hortonworks), which is a open source. This will take care of all the trouble you through in installing Hadoop and hive to your virtual machine.
