This Specialization focuses on the basics of iOS application development. You'll gain the skills you need to create your own app, including fluency in Objective-C and UIKit and SpriteKit user interface concepts, and you'll learn to leverage networking, security, audio, video, location, and sensor frameworks. In the final Capstone Project, you'll apply your skills to create a networked game that leverages sensors on the phone to create a unique gaming experience, and that you can showcase in job applications and interviews or offer in the iTunes store.

Course Description

You will learn to make fluid digital interactive experiences that are suitable for gaming and use the advanced sensor hardware built into the iPhone and iPad. This includes drawing 2D graphics, playing sounds and music, integrating with Game Center, the iOS physics engine and detecting device orientation and location.Upon completing this course, you will be able to:1. Use the reverse geocode service to convert latitude and longitude to location names2. Implement GeoFences to make an app efficiently monitor an iOS device's location3. Leverage the power of accelerometers, magnetometers and gyroscopes to orient a device in physical space4. Create an app that responds to ambient light levels by using screen brightness as a proxy5. Play sound effects and other media as audio6. Make a game like Pong7. Make a game like Breakout8. Manipulate graphics in a game environment9. Use the physics engine to create realistic game worlds10. React to multi-touch events for complex interaction design11. Detect and respond to collisions and contacts efficiently12. Chain complex sequences of actions, animations and sounds with precision13. Animate multi-frame sprites14. Create particle systems to simulate fire, smoke and magic (and more!)15. Donald J. Patterson is an Associate Professor in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. Professor Patterson's research lies at the interface of ubiquitous computing, artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction. In this space he researches applications, algorithms and systems that use intelligent context to support situated sustainable computing. He has received multiple impact awards for his research as well as for his support of undergraduate teaching and research. He has led several research projects including work on activity and event recognition from Wi-Fi networks, GPS and RFID sensor streams and social status streams. Other research includes work on the NSF funded Nomatic*IM project and Nomatic*Aid, a context aware instant messenger system, and a context aware photo-capture system respectively. Both of these systems work to bring the user control over the digital presentation of their context while solving a generalized form of the position to place problem. Patterson's current research agenda focusses on developing robust sensor interpretation systems that can survive infrastructure intermittency in an effort to manage sustainable challenges in the future, aka Collapse Informatics. His published work has received best paper awards from the Computer-Human Interaction (CHI) conference and the IEEE International Symposium on Wearable Computing. Even if you don't plan to develop games for iOS, this course is a must. This course teaches you the basics of using sensors to detect motion and orientation, providing audio feedback, geofencing and SpriteKit. Don Patterson is an excellent instructor and clearly presents the topics in a logical manner.
