A Crash Course in Binary Space Partitioning (Udemy.com)
Learn about 3D space division for game map generation and fast rendering
Created by: Penny de Byl
Last updated April 2021
What you will learn
- Students will learn about Binary Space Partitioning and how it works.
- Students will learn how to write an algorithm to create a binary tree which divides 3D space.
- Students will learn how to use recursion to traverse a binary tree and create a 3D dungeon map.
Course Description
Binary Space Partitioning is a technique that's been around for a while and has been used for a number of purposes, in particular 3D polygon divisions, optimised physics collisions, and world map creation within games. Most notably it was used by John Carmack in the creation of the game engine for Doom.
This course uses Unity 2020.
Learn how to program and work with:
space division
polygon ordering for fast rendering and occlusion
binary trees
recursive search algorithms
dungeon map creation
What people are saying about Penny's courses:
Dr. Penny is a wonderful person and a true expert. All of her courses I've taken have been top notch and in my opinion there is no better teacher out there.
Allow me to say how hugely important this is for a person who is interested in certain types of game design. Creating games where you can create AI behaviors that support emergent situations.
I honestly love Holistic's teaching approach and I've never learned so much within a few hours about coding effectively with such detailed explanations!
In this short course, you will gain an overview of the algorithm and how it is used to partition 3D space for optimised polygon drawing as well as get your hands dirty using BSPs to create a game environment dungeon map

I've also consulted for Unity, SAE, the Australian Institute of Entertainment and Wikitude. My best selling textbooks including Holistic Game Development with Unity are used in over 100 institutions world-wide. My graduates work at companies like Apple, Ubisoft, LinkedIn and Deloitte Digital.
I have an honours degree in computer graphics and a Ph.D. in artificial intelligence for games characters. Over the course of my career I've won numerous awards for teaching excellence at the state, national and international levels including the Australian Learning and Teaching Council's Excellence in Teaching Award and the Unity Mobile Game Curriculum Competition. My approach to teaching computer science and related fields is project-based giving you hands-on workshops you can immediately get your teeth into.
I want you to leave my virtual classroom fully armed with a toolkit of skills for life-long learning. I'm excited to now be focussing my efforts full-time on Udemy to bring my years of knowledge and experience to those eager to learn about technology.

I've learned about binary trees before and seen BSPs been used in ureal engine and unity, but this has added context that and deepen my understanding of this part of game design. thank you.

I have to go through two times for making my interest in the algorithm.

Great short course. This is the first time I have seen BSP adequately explained with visuals. Lots of fun building dungeons and byte array representations as well.

The content is interesting, but I'm not sure how I would apply this with Unity

I had quite a lot of fun right from the start up until the end. This is an amazing course that surpasses even paid courses' standards, everything is explained in depth, and it has a lot of challenges to really get what is going on.

Holistic3D, in particular, Penny de Byl does an excellent job explaining all things Unity. These short tutorials reinforce ideas that help developers do their jobs better. I appreciate the hard work that goes into developing and clearly stating these concepts.

The course is well-structured and provides an easy introduction into using BSPs.

Very interesting and well explained course; it's simple to follow also for a non native english speaker, and it's free. I really liked the gradual approach from a simple start to the final solution and enjoyed challenges.

A really excellent course to help with procedural dungeon generation. I really like this technique as it creates dungeons that are probably easier to navigate than the mazes we created in the Procedural dungeon course. Thank you for making this!

As always with Penny's courses, I loved it. Good teaching method and didatics. Looking forward for the other courses! Thank you for your great work!
